Federer looks fantastic

He is serving lights out, including a forty second service game; his movement is excellent, and he appears relaxed (even smiling). He's showing why he's gone deep at the US OPen for the seventh consecutive year...

It's the best he's looked in a while, that's for sure. But then again it's Roger, so it's to be expected that he would make improvements. But on the flipside, was he really ever playing bad, as opposed to him just not pulling all the miracle shots and taking as many to the woodshed.

What did Soderling say to him?

soderling made a play on a ball that was called out. federer challenged, and the ball was in according to hawkeye. soderling was set to replay the point but federer asked the umpire if it was his point.

pascal maria then appeared to give the point to federer, and soderling was rightfully irritated.

he came and challenged the umpire and then yelled to federer who was across the net

"you want that point, eh!"

soderling proceeded to fist pump federer's UEs in the game and it looked like we were set for a battle royale, but federer maintained his focus and put on a clinic on how to play in windy conditions.

so what's suddenly happened with Nadal's and Roger;s serve ???????

Federer serving well at the USO is not that surprising, though given his prior two slam results it is interesting that it is suddenly spot on. Nadal's is quite the surprise and I haven't a clue. I did expect him to up his serve two years ago but it didn't happen back then.

Yup, looked great today, maybe even close to prime Fed, although less consistent (but that could be attributed to the wind?)

it was a solid performance but certainly not fantastic.

the serve worked well given the conditions. 62% first serves in isn't that great but given the wind is was.

I wasn't too impressed with Soderling faking a handshake to the chair umpire at the end of the match. Acting like a big 6'4" baby.

Federer relied upon his mental toughness and composure to eke out a close third set. Soederling looked like one of the women out there mentally and emotionally.

Federer and the umpire were completely right. In fact, Federer shouldn't have even had to ask the umpire. Soderling struck the ball before it was called out, his shot wasn't affected by the call. Hence, he netted a ball that Federer hit in. If the correct call had been made in the first place, he would have lost the point.

Federer does indeed look good. I set alarm for 3am to watch this match with Soderling and was not disappointed. Even though it was straight sets it was a very good display from Federer.

Soderling faking a handshake at the end of the match was a poor show. It seems Soderling is still the same guy he was before, despite his attempts to portray himself as a better guy than most people used to think. He seems to look for confrontations with the umpire/opponent just to pump up his own ego and wag his tail.

Glad Federer taught him a lesson and spanked him in straights. Fed looked great.

Indeed he looks good (and he always does in the USO) but I believe the Djoker will give him a real run for his money.

Hey anyone catch the match commentating by Nadal in the Djoker/Monfils match?

Nadal explained his change in serve and even showed what he did. He moved his grip over on serve to a slightly more continental grip 2 days before the tournament started. He says that it lets him get a little flatter on his serve which allows for more power.

Very impressive. Gilbert was even giving him props because he said Agassi used to do the same thing with his forehand before a tournament. LOL Gilbert basically said when you have as much talent as Nadal and Agassi you can change things up when you want and adapt almost instantly.

So Nadal is hitting it flatter...

So his serve does not have as much action as before but more pace???

I think the incredible movement and spin on his serve gave Nadal great advantage, i hope his serve still has some good action on it!

I agree - spin, placement and consistency seem to out-match power on a regular basis. Federer hit 18 aces and 25 unreturned serves last night. Soderling...a whopping 2.
