Federer needed a wild card? What the heck?

On the ATP Tour site on the main page, it featured a blurb about Federer getting into the Monte Carlo masters event by way of a wild card.

Why in the world does the #2 player in the world need a wild card?

Anyone to satisfy my curiosity?

He was not originally scheduled to play the tournament so he needed a wild card to be allowed into the draw.

Exactly, since Monte Carlo is no longer mandatory, it does not have automatic entries anymore. It's up to the players to enter their names by the deadline 6 weeks before the event. Federer was not going to play this event (despite making so much noise about it losing its mandatory status last year), but he very recently changed his mind and ask for a wildcard since he missed the entry deadline.

Actaully I think the MC Tournament Director would really have liked to see Fed back at MC so he offered a WC in hopes that Fed would accept, adn he did.

Exactly; I think it was more a case of the tournament offering Federer a Wild Card, than Federer asking for one; quite unusual really, because most of the time I think players will actively ask for one rather than the tournament offering it.

Hmmm... I wonder if this means he's going up against high seeds. If so, I would be surprised if he gets far. At every major grand slam event, the first week is usually a breeze, but he starts to always run into trouble when he plays ranked players. I predict another disappointing year for federer. His magical wand is waning.

no, he still gets the two seed but it says WC next to his name in the draw

Its like that in any non-mandatory event, when a top rank player decides to play late, the director gives a WC. Heck i bet if Tsonga or Roddick did the same as Federer they would get WC"S

Why? Why would the number two ranked player in the world be seeded anywhere else in the draw but the number two spot? (or the number one spot if the number one player wasn't there).
