I could be wrong, but is this not the same thing as Cincy selling tickets for Rafa and Fed, and if they both pull out then no refunds right?

There have been times I have paid heavy for IW or Canada tickets thinking someone was going to play and they did not.

It happens. He could have got injured too. Maybe it's not the same, but seems like they have the right to say no refunds.
I don't think it is the case though. If you buy tickets for, say, Cinci semi-final then that's what your tickets are for. It's not Cinci's fault if your preferred players don't make it. In this case it appears that the ATP sold tickets SPECIFICALLY for Switzerland matches at an inflated price and are now dragging their heels over refunds even though Switzerland are not playing.

Like I said earlier, we need to be honest with ourselves. If this was Nadal a lot of people here would be saying very different things to what they are now.

Yes, it is odd, and I said that when the news first broke, but @ABCD is right, it sounds like some are saying Fed knew this was the plan and went along with it knowing he was never going to play.

I have issue with that, as I do not believe Fed would, did, or even thought it through. I think he simply pulled the trigger on committing to ATP Cup before he was ready.

Thank you for your understanding. Yes those tickets were sold specifically for Switzerland vs another country. There really is no ground for non refund. Djokovic’s sessions are from $30-$100 while fed’s are $100-$200. How can people not be upset? What if you even made travel arrangements?

None of us want to believe it, but we are relying on our belief in Federer's integrity here. Normally when we're refuting anti-Fed stuff, like Roofgate, we're pointing out the implausibilities and the illogicalities of the opponents' case.

In this case, if you're an anti-Fedder, saying that he agreed to play the tournament to get ATP support for the Laver Cup but didn't have any intention of playing it is, unfortunately, perfectly logical. If he wants more time with his family why did he agree to play the South American exhibitions and in China? Why ditch the ATP Tour which you would think fit quite well as an AO warm-up?

@Rogfan is perfectly entitled to question this.

If he wanted to deliberately hose the paying fans, he would have withdrawn in the last minute, thus not giving any chance for the fans to recuperate their losses, so your little theory goes up in flames.

Also, you don't know how he is traveling to his exos. He might be with his family and do tourism, or he can be having business plans for which he needs to be where he is going. Speaking of his plans as you know anything and judging him from there is laughable, let alone framing this whole thing with that.

I'm quite clearly not saying that he did. I'm saying that the theory that he did this is logical. If this was Nadal you would be one of the first to make the anti case.

I just see it differently. I see it as a simple change in plans 3 months in advance. Why? Family like he said, or other reasons (many are plausible), but essentially saying "corruption" and "fraud" of his fans seems harsh, and very unlikely.

Well, of course, I very much hope you are right! And I know you're not one of those who goes round questioning other players' motives all the time so I think you're perfectly entitled to stand up for Roger's integrity.

But I didn't like seeing @Rogfan, as someone who seems to be having trouble getting back money to which he is clearly morally entitled and is a passionate Federer fan, getting attacked for daring to even question the motives here.

He didn’t withdraw the last minute is 1. It will completely mess up ATP Cup as his withdrawal effectively takes Switzerland out, which messes up the group. They need time to replace Switzerland. 2. Withdrawing last minute would be a massive PR disaster for him which he can’t afford. Lastly if he looked at his calendar and decided a schedule in October, I can’t see why he would want to withdraw last minute over the festive season? I’m questioning his decision making and judgement in this matter but no way he’d want to screw the fans that way.

I’d also add if he was always committed to ATPCup, how come it wasn’t on the 2020 schedule when he announced it a few weeks ago? At the time my heart already sank when I saw that schedule with AO as his first tournament. I even went to check ATP cups promotion video to make sure Fed was in it and he actually said something along the line of I love playing for my country. I felt assured hearing that. Oh well. If people can’t see why I’m unimpressed I don’t know what else to say.

Really unwanted debate on Fed's scheduling decision. He announced the withdrawal 3 months in advance and not 2 weeks before the event. There is ample time for the event organizers to refund the tickets for Switzerland. If they don't do the refund, thats on the organizers.

Fed claimed he will pay RG20. Buy the tickets at your own peril because anything can happen between today and the RG20 scheduling-wise for Fed. The guy is not 28.

Haven't posted in Casa de GOAT recently.

Fed's GOAT, folks!

To outright trolls and pseudo-trolls, alike: You got @Tennis_Hands banned from the thread. Now one of the most informed (and informative) of Federer fans no longer has privileges to post here.

Kudos all around! (y)
Expand? @Tennis_Hands go banned for not wanting to get into the politics? He was the one trying to get people to stay away from the topic.

Don't love being in Novak's group when Rafa might not even play.

But I like Fed's chances against the bottom 2 of his group (Thiem, Berretini) better than the other (Zverev, Tsitsipas). Even considering the laters poor form atm.

Good chance to make the SF even with a loss to Novak.

Grouping seems fine. By all rights Fed has the advantage over Thiem in these conditions. If the Berrettini from Wimbledon shows up then happy days. Djoker for whatever reason just doesn't scare me and in all three matches it'll be on Fed's racket; he just needs to make sure he doesn't bring out the shanky one.

Fed should go 2-1 in his group and finish second, thus playing the top guy of the other group for a spot in the finals. I don't expect him to beat Djokovic in either the RR or final, however.
It is happening. Fed will win WTF. I just have a feeling, and I think Fed is due a win over Djoker. Dont think Rafa makes it to SF (withdrawal or form).

As is usually the case, Fed's form will dictate his chances. Top form? Can't see anyone in the tournament who will stop him. Decent form? Could still win it.
He was in top form in the Wimbledon final this year and still lost due to mental demons. He was in superlative form in the 2015 USO and Wimbledon final and wasn't able to cross the finish line for the same reasons. I call it as I see it, no sugarcoating.

Yes, he is not and should not be favored. But if he brings his best tennis in a final verse Djoker, he can beat him. With best of 3, I honestly see Fed beating him if Fed plays his best.

Meh. Give me 40-15 again and I know where my money is. Let's see if lightning strikes again.

He was in mediocre form in the Wimby15 final. 40 % of 2015 semi-final Fed showed up for the final and still took a set off of super peak Djoker.

He also won the 19 final, he just didn't convert that stupid match point. Unless Shankerer shows up, he will beat Djokovic and win this tournament. His form in Basel was too good and Djokovic just won Paris, because nobody challenged him.

Indeed. Really when I mention form I basically mean level. If Fed's level is tip top throughout the matches that need it, no one stops him. An unlikely event, of course.

He was in mediocre form in the Wimby15 final in 2015.
His semifinal against Murray was the greatest form he'd shown since 2012 at that time. He went into the Wimbledon final in devastating form and nobody can argue that who actually remembers 2015. His form instantly became trash in the final after he was broken-- mental demons, as previously mentioned. His serving in the semis was one of his most devastating serving performances of his career, yet he served mediocre in the final.
