Good stuff. Goffin is the guy to practice with for Roger to feel good about himself.

Goffin is good enough for practice but not hot enough to trouble Rog.

Yeah it really looked like he had shaken a lot of the rust that was visible in the Geneva match now. Fewer errors, more winners! Much better on serve, and just a bit better in all areas in general really.

I like that he's learning and analyzing anything and everything as he gets back into match shape. I also thought he was 'testing' match-play positions/shots/tactics/etc. as well against Andujar in Geneva.

Fedr beat Istomin easier than I thought he would. Cilic will be a better test as he's sort of like a Delpo-lite. Cilic was bad in the last few tourneys, but he can still hit the cover off the ball, and he also won his match in straights.
1 match at a time.

Interesting comments from Roger about Cilic

Federer on Cilic: "We trained together in Geneva, and it was the old Cilic, hitting forehand and backhand winners towards all the directions. Then I saw him in a match against Stricker and he played worse."

Which Cilic will show up?

If I had to guess? The good Cilic, unfortunately :(. They tend bring their best game against the old man even if they've been struggling recently (see: Basilashvilli in Dubai, Andujar in Geneva). They played very well in those 2 matches with punishing groundies.

OTOH, vs. Cilic, it'll show us where the old man's form is as grass approaches.
I think Fedr in 4.

Should be a good test indeed!

Fedr was asked whether unfamiliar defeats like the one against Pablo Andujar in Geneva hurt his motivation. Interesting answer: «Such defeats are unfortunately part of the process. I knew I'd have to take the risk of early defeats if I came back now.» (1/4)

«Like in Doha, in Geneva, maybe also in Paris. The alternative would have been to wait until I was back at 100 per cent. But I've done enough rehab, trained enough, I want to play.» (2/4)

«And and as long as I don't risk getting severely injured and play at an acceptable level, that's okay with me. Of course, if I had been able to do several more training blocks, that would have helped. But we don't have that time at the moment.» (3/4)

«That's why I have to go through it. These defeats mustn't throw me off track. I have to stay positive, trust my path. Even if it may look strange to some people, to journalists or experts. But that doesn't bother me.» (4/4)

Here's a translation of Fed's presser in French after the first round. Interesting that Mirka and the kids aren't with him in Paris:

Q1: "Roger, did you reassure yourself today? You had only played 3 matches since coming back in March, one of them on clay which you lost. So were you asking yourself many questions coming into RG or were you confident and are you reassured today?"

RF : "I felt rather confident these last 3 or 4 days. In Geneva, when I practiced with McDonald and twice with Monfils, I noticed that it's not simple playing in Geneva. The ball flies off quickly, it's hard to find rhythm. Today we saw that if you play coming forward, serve well, if the weather's nice, you can keep the rallies short. Maybe because I'm from the 90's, we're used to clay being slow, rallies being slow. But I can use the kick serve, dropshots, you can shorten rallies as long as you don't play Rafa or Novak who have insane defense. It does feel nice to win again, you need to win to reassure yourself, not to play well in practice. To be honest, I'm sick of practice, I've done enough of it and I know how to handle it. I need matches to prove myself I play well. And I did today, I'm very satisfied."

Q2: "Can you tell us about the match, are you pleased about it? And how you miss your family, not having them in the stadium?"

RF: "I was happy about starting the match very well, it gave me some... some air, I felt I was quickly controlling things, that I could win points in many different ways. Then you can have fun, play at the net, serve and volley, dropshots, take some risks now and then, play short or make rallies longer, I could choose anything. That's why I think the opponent was ideal for a 1st round, I know the second one will be totally different. I don't think he had break points, I served well especially in the first set, I was very focused, that's something that worked well for me in Doha and Geneva, and it still does here in Paris. Of course, I miss my family, but I also know that if I lose early, I go back home immediately again, so it's fine. But if I look to the close future, with Wimbledon and maybe Tokyo, it's true there's a lot less family than usual for me, but I don't want to think about it for now. I have them on the phone several times every day, so at the moment I'm doing very well."

Q3: "About Cilic, do you have thoughts on him ? He's not the Cilic we used to know"

RF: "Honestly, I haven't watched him play these last few years, I just know he's been struggling. I practiced with him in Geneva, and I saw the old Cilic I used to know, hitting forehands and backhands winners left and right. I watched him a little against Stricker, and he played safer which is normal in an actual match. I don't know if right now he's struggling about how aggressive he wants to play and dictate the game without doing too many unforced errors. I'm delighted to face him, I don't know the score but he must be winning if you say that. I prefer playing against someone I know, like in Round 1."

Some Fed selfies today at the Eiffel Tower (sorry for the large sizes):

I will take it. Funny how I would usually be upset during matches like this where he has some hiccups but man I am excited.

Enjoy it guys. This should be fun. Wish I could have watched Feds entire career without the expectations.

Listening to Roger’s interview just now with the Tennis Channel. He didn’t mention anything about his summer/fall schedule besides the Olympics. Indian Wells moved to October. Maybe he’ll play that. But I actually would be surprised if he plays the US Open. His chances of winning that are zilch. And it will probably be very hard on the body.

For anyone who missed it yesterday:

Shows Fed's comfort in the French language that he's able to argue fluently even when in riled.

And the "No, no, no, no" to the umpire (2:13) is quite funny. Fed doesn't really come over as someone who would be obnoxiously "don't you know who I am?" but (as in the argument with the umpire in the USO 2009 Final) a certain imperiousness does creep into his arguments with umpires from time to time.

The commentator has a pointed comment about "other players" who make the server wait for a much longer time.

Fed trying to cope without the ball boys acting as towel bearers is also quite entertaining.

Kind of put the Djoker haters to rest with their "Fed says he is better now" junk. He summed up the difference pretty well. Don't want to hear anymore of that propaganda from Djoker fans.

Lol, if they really believe that, then I guess they believe that 2021-Djokr would beat 2011-Djokr in 8 of 10 tries. Though, in reality, it'd be the opposite and only bc 2011-Djokr got bored of winning so much so he gifts 2 matches to 2021-Djokr. Same with 2006-Fedr vs. 2017-Fedr. Don't misunderstand, 2021-Djokr and 2017-Fedr are still at a high-level, but they're a level below their peak versions.
