Federer sucked....

Alright...when someone of Federer's Caliber serves at 45% first serves for the match and has an uncharacteristically high number of unforced errors even Lleyton Hewitt could have beaten him in the final. And I'm not taking anything away from DelPo because he played extremely well and deserved the title, but Federer was not up to par and almost seemed like he didn't really care...I'm a huge Federer fan but his performance at the final was very disappointing...Like he said in his post match interview, "I'm tired, I want to go home and rest", I guess that explains it all.

His arm got sore dealing with DelPo's 100mph forehands. It's just that simple.

He was serving under 50% in the first set, so that wasn't it.

I think he just had an off day. Maybe he was thrown off by how far back Del Potro was standing on his first serve and, knowing how long his reach was, he tried to do something extra with it.

He simply couldn't handle the pressure of winning 6 in a row like last year's Wimby final. 6 in a row is too tough, Borg couldn't handle the pressure either in 1981.

G.O.A.T.
He was dumping his first serves into the net like I've never seen and there was some problem with his second serve too but his main problem was in the fact that stopped attacking and as the match went on Del Po only got stronger which also might've made Roger go for a bit more .
A match lost or won is always due to a combination of factors.Roger's serve was just one factor.Major factor was Del Po's level of play.
And no,he wasnt tired before the match,he was tired after it.

Maybe Fed just isn't as great as you think if he sucked v Rafa and Delpo in slam finals.

OR

Rafa and Delpo are greater than you think because they demolished Fed in the 5th set of the slams this year. The 5th sets were not even close, it was all 1 way traffic.

(Delpo is no probably fluke, so the second option seems to ring more truth. Nadal isn't underrated around here, he's an all-time great by consensus.)

11 df tell the story of how "well" fed played. we've come to expect shanks & numerous ufe's from his racquet, but the dfs were very surprising.

Clearly Fed was not on his game. As the ATP stats would show, Federer is one of the leading servers on the tour. To have such a low first serve percentage and double-digit double faults is surely going to kill his game. In the first set-and-a-half, Del Potro was playing terrible and Fed's poor serving still yielded a comfortable lead. Of course Del Potro lost the butterflies and got better as the match went on, whereas Fed's form never really recovered. Fed played a mediocre match and Del Potro capitalized on it. I think Del Potro's confidence increased during the match as Fed contrinued to struggle. So there is always more than one force going on during a match. ie. Fed playing poorly likely caused Del Potro to gain confidence. Had Fed started serving better I'm sure Del Potro wouldn't have had such confidence towards the end.

You gotta give Del Potro props because alot of players would have choked away the opportunity.

His serve went off in the latter stages....frankly, he looked tired out heading into the 5th. Likely, he was expecting an easy win at the start of this, based on how things were going his way. But, DelPo really shook off the nerves, got into the match and turned it totally around. Fed played way too many shots to the Delpo forehand, which really was not missing, and he was getting cannon fire back. He did not seem to have much of a strategy once this got into a dogfight. Compared to the W final, Federer looked wiped out at the end of the 4th....he wanted to fight I think, but no gas left in the tank and Delpo just too strong for him on this day.

You are taking away away from Juan with these excuses.

These aren't excuses. Saying that a player played poorly isn't an excuse unless they use some external factors as a reason such as the player had an unfavorable schedule, played a long, grueling match prior, or was supposedly injured or something. Federer did not play at the same level that has won him 15 slams, plain and simple.

IMO Roddick at Wimbledon was much better than Del Potro at USO, yet Roddick lost the match and Del Potro won. If Fed served at the Wimby final like he did in the USO final, he would've lost in straight sets to Roddick.

Yup, Fed played poorly (by his standards), so DelPo was the better man that day and deserved to win. End of story.

Right, thats what matters. On that day, DP was the better player. To say that Fed played his absolute best and DP played his best would mean that DP is overall a better player than Fed. But...15 slams and #1 ranking >>>> 1 slam and #6 ranking.

It just proves that Fed can no longer play the back-to-back final in the US Open. But since the other 3 slams give him a fully day of rest, he has a much better chance of winning them.

I LOVE the 5th set tiebreak at the US Open- Love it.

I hate the back-to-back semi final to finals. - Hate it.

Well as Mary Carillo said during the match, "if both of these guys play their best, let's face it, Federer wins easily".

Fed will be working on his serve volley in the off season, so when he's being thumped from the baseline by Delpo next time he will have a plan B!

11 double faults was so bizarre, you could feel just how nervous Fed was.

I think winning this was huge for him and super high pressure because it would have been a new amazing record of 6 straight.

Look at what DP was doing to his 2nd serve, it was unreal. That also puts a lot of pressure on his first serve.

Regaarding Fed's serving,

1. his percentage was 43 % in the first 2 sets, which is bad but he was winning at that time

2. his perc. was about 54 % for the last 3 sets, which is not too bad

3. Fed served 11 aces in the last 3 sets

4. Fed made 11 DFs, but 6 of those were before he lost his serve in 2nd set (ie when he was winning), and 4 were in the 5th set when he was already a broken man

And DelPo DFed on a set point, and he gave up his lead in 3rd and 4th sets.

boo hoo Fed fans these are just excuses no matter how u phrase them...
you keep saying Fed played poorly or served bad when he loses ...grow up guys. tennis is a combination of all the shots. or are u guys saying he is a one shot wonder like roddick was for most of his career

Also by same logic u shud say that Fed has 15 slams mainly becos of his serve ..or his opponents lost becos of their poor service or FH

Delpo didnt appear on court for almost 2 sets becos of nervousness but still won becos he was able to rise his level .. naturally the other person wudnt continue at that high level

Its very rare to see a high quality final -- wimby Federer Nadal 2008 (though nadal didnt win in 4 sets only due to nerves)

Its not possible for a person to play at high level every match.. In fact he has managed to reach 22 straight SF becos of his consistency and poor mindset of his opponents

look at some of the matches he cud well have lost in the last 2-3 years in GS but escaped becos of his opponents lack of belief and hence nervous play
Baghdatis 2006 AO (set and break up)
Tipsarevic 2008 AO (up 2 sets to one)
Monfils 2008 FO (breakpoints to serve out to 2 sets all)
Berdych 2009 AO (2 sets up)
Acasuso 2009 FO (1 set all and 5-2 in 3rd set)
Tommy Haas 2009 FO (2 sets up)
Roddick 2009 wimby (set points for 2 sets to love)
Delpo 2009 FO (up 2 sets to one)

I am a Roddick fan - don't get me wrong. But DelPo playing well is a suprisingly excellent returner. I am not sure what's wrong with Roddick's return game but its not on Delpo's level.

You guys talk like serve percentage is a fixed number and doesn't depend at all on your opponent. But it does.

When you play a better returner you often try for more difficult serves and you will miss more and get less aces. Delpo hits really huge off the ground off both wings and he was able to really force Federer into some bad spots. More credit needs to go to Delpo..

He was under far more pressure at wimby 2008(properly under more pressure at wimby 2009/Garros 09 aswell).

Going by his reaction at the end,I actually dont think Federer actually cared that much(at least compared to the last two wimbys and french 09)....

Im glad Del Potro won it though, because he wanted it more....

I'm no Carillo fan but she played tennis professionally -retiring early due to a knee injury I believe.

She has been commenting for over 20 years and has been at most if not all major events live. That makes a huge difference even with the advent of flat panel wide screen HD tv's .

You don't have to like or agree with her but she is an authority in the sport.

Blah! Just because you played tennis professionally doesn't make you an authority or a decent analyst.

As opposed to posting on this board? I agree with you btw to an extent but she has done a lot more than played she has been live at all the events we wish we could fly to and see live and she talks with the players etc. And she is at all of them with some of the best seats in the house. I think she's qualified to make judgments on the sport and it's players.

And she is not a Curt Gowdy type being flown to different sporting events all over the place. All she does is tennis.
