Finally got one of those threatening scam calls

Call them back and say you'll explain your problem, then start reading out a random passage from Moby Dick or something and see how long it takes for them to hang up.

As a side effect the authorities in India can check out all the people that went to a hospital to seek help for punctured eardrums.

Lots of gullible fall for it. Not just the elderly. That is why these scammers continue to operate. The corrupt Indian police do nothing about it and are often in on the scam.
Watch this video. Thousands of victims every year taken for millions. Yet, the law enforcement in the West has not even contacted the Indian police. No contact, let alone any investigation by Canadian and American law enforcement.

If you get scammed by one of these people, it's your own fault IMO. Especially at this point. These idiots are the ones who encourage them to annoy everyone.

Yes of course people fall for it. My point however is that none of us should worry about it. By "us" I mean TT'ers as we are an exceptional group, so much so that I cannot imagine anyone on this forum falling for it. Then I went on to say that scammers should be punished for exploiting the disadvantaged. You'll notice in my quote that I didn't single out the elderly.

The video you cite makes this very point about who they're targeting. At 2:45 the former head of the Hamilton Police Fraud Unit states:

The criminals are using victim vulnerability, and it's not everyday and every Canadian citizen that is being victimized by this. It is the vulnerable, the elderly, um, new immigrants to Canada that may not know all of our laws.

I don't think it's simply a matter of whether one is disadvantaged. Unless you consider most people to be disadvantaged. These scams are a hell of a lot more plausible than any religion and yet most people believe in one of those.

There is good reason why the UK police don't contact the Indian police-they often now don't even attend house burglaries & thefts of cars due to limited resources. They really don't have the time or money to be phoning India & Pakistan & trying to find people who can speak a reasonable level of English who they know full well will likely do nothing about it anyway. The resources are much better spent trying to make people aware of the different scams & trying to reduce them happening, unfortunately some people will always do daft things without thinking, people will always be greedy thinking they will really be getting refunds on something, or making it big on the stock exchange via boiler room scams & then you figure in a lot of the victims have dementia/alzheimer's & don't even know what day of the week it is half the time.

As I thought, the officer said the main victims are elderly and new immigrants.

What I don't understand is that you can easily make out from the accent that the caller being from the Canadian agency is a very low probability (but not impossible) event. Why do people fall for this?

Ajit Pai recently said that the FCC could do nothing about neighborhood-spoofing and robocalls, and asked private companies to block them. I don't think it is that difficult. They basically use the flexibility of VOIP to do it, which means all the conventional internet tracking mechanisms can be used to go after them. What many people do not know is that the current administration loosened Obama-era robo call rules to pander to the US telemarketing industry which heavily "invests" in politicians. This is what happens with "deregulation." The government cannot have it both ways.

Obviously those are exceptions. I watched a news report on those scams once and the "victims" being interviewed were ordinary Canadians.

I just watched the CBC video and that Persian guy is just an imbecile. Giving 110k away to a guy on the telephone LMAO. Wow.

It's not like the average native born Canadian has any real understanding of our tax laws so that isn't much of an excuse.
