Nice. My g/f got me a go pro for Christmas to film my matches. What are you using for mounts and how high up was yours?

Oh, I use a GoPro Tripod Mount which then screws into a customized extending pole I made to fit in my tennis bag. Pole was 4' long but cut it down so it's like 20" and extends out to 36" which is perfect for easily affixing the pole/camera to a 10' fence. I've taken a ton of pictures when I built the thing (including drilling a hole in the GP case to have an external battery pack power it). Yep, even thought about making a detailed guide how to build the pole, drilling, and other mods but have been too lazy to get around to it. :(

Let me also mention...there is an inverse relation between the height of the mounted camera and how good you may appear as a player. Similar to when you're driving a Corvette you're close to the ground and the road looks like it's coming at you so fast. Jump in a Minivan and driving the same speed it seems like you're draggin' bad. So putting a camera on a tripod at 5.5' high at the back fence or at 10' on that fence you'll think a player is much slower when viewing from the 10' vantage.

Ok, now to address the wide, medium and narrow mode. I made this picture to show you what you'd get when taking pictures or videoing your match. Notice you get a LOT of extraneous stuff on the wide mode. Who want's to see walls on the other side of the room. The medium mode also gives unrelated stuff. Narrow mode captures just your court and what you want to see. It's like being right there on the court.

is wide the standard 1080p / 30fps?
narrow 720p / 60fps?
what is medium?

I have a gopro hero 3 white as well. I am going to attempt the pole build.

All three of my pictures (superimposed upon one another) were in 1080p / 30fps. I have the SILVER edition which was the mid-grade model (white $100 less and black $100 more). Mine has narrow, medium, and wide all in 1080p / 30 fps. The expensive Black edition has this also. The White edition, unfortunately, ONLY has the medium mode in that 1080p / 30fps. So you cannot get the narrow mode I speak so highly of on your white edition. In fact, what swayed me to pump the extra money into buying the silver edition is to get that narrow mode.

Ok, so everything appears closer in the narrow mode, which is good. However, it looks to me that the narrow mode will not catch some of the deep and corner stuff that the medium mode will.

Must get one of these GoPros to experiment with. Thanks for posting the picture(s) corbind.

I'll probably first get one of those fence mount poles that go for about $70, and see if it improves the videos of the cameras I already have. Don't have the tools to make the stuff cobind has. Not sure I'd feel confident drilling into a $300 or $400 GoPro anyway. :)

1080p is very nice, but 720p is plenty good enough for my purposes. From what corbind said, the GoPro should record continuously for at least a couple of hours at 720p, which should be long enough for anything I want to use it for.

Maybe first I'll just get a cheaper (or used?) 5 or 6 foot tripod, so I don't have so many slanted and out of focus vids while I'm saving up for the GoPro. :)

Well life is about compromise. I've tested video where I get almost every ball in the video -- but at a cost. Cost ya say? Yea, you then get a seat that's back about ten more feet. By using the narrow mode you'll catch 98% of the hits videoed up close so you can see the stuff when you replay it on your computer. The 2% you miss oh well. Similarly, in the wide mode you can watch the matches on both adjacent courts. If there are pretty girls playin' some doubles, hey, go for it. But it's really wasteful to record in wide and medium modes because they catch so much unnecessary real estate.

As far as buying an expensive pole to record your video...hold off on that. I know when I bought the camera I was just gonna plunk down another $75 for a nice pole/fence hanger but tough to justify having just spent $300 on a camera. Since I'm handy in the garage figured I'd make my own on the cheap. Cost me about $15-17 in materials so worked out well especially since I got to make perfect to fit my tennis bag. Oh, and as far as slanted video like you showed? Just this week I found out it takes seconds to fix it in the GoPro software. Couple of clicks and it levels it out horizontally. It was fun as can be taking good (horizontal video) then purposely slanting it a lot. Hilarious -- and wrong.

Further, they have a GoPro app free so you can watch your live video on your iPhone, iPad, or cell phone. You can see if the camera angle is right when you mount it on the fence while holding your phone watching what the camera sees. Neato. God, I sound like a GP salesman.

It looks to me as though the narrow mode would give me about the same view as my Olympus VR-340, which I got because it has a slightly wider near field of view than my Sony Cybershot DSC S2100, and it also does video at 720p (1280x720) with a wider aspect ration, 16:9 to 4:3, as opposed to the Sony's max res of vga (640x480). I just need to get another Lithium Ion rechargeable battery so that I can get more than an hour and some minutes at 720p.

The thing about using medium wide angle with the GoPro is that that's pretty much what I would be buying it for. That is, to get a near field of view wide enough to take in ALL of the deep corner action. I don't care if it makes me look worse, or if it's not quite as close a view as the narrow. I really like the vids that my friend with the GoPro has produced with what I guess is the wide view. Medium seems like just what the doctor ordered.

Why should I hold off on spending the $75 for a nice pole? You gonna make and send me one for free? :) I didn't think so. :) So, first I get a used or cheap 5 or 6 foot tripod, then I get the mounting pole, then I get the GoPro. No problem, except that I probably won't be able to get the GoPro until next year, or maybe late this year (lots of other than video related stuff to get).

Well, that IS quite handy. Another reason to get a GoPro. I'm pretty sure that neither of my current cameras can do that. Though I'm not 100% certain of that as I haven't explored all the possibilities with the Olympus. Come to think of it, there's probably some free software out there that I can do this with. Must check that out.
It was fun as can be taking good (horizontal video) then purposely slanting it a lot. Hilarious -- and wrong.
Yes, quite amusing, I thought. I laughed hard when I saw the video of my spill. Unfortunately, the slant wasn't deliberate. I just couldn't get the camera quite straight, and the wind was playing havoc with the camera's positioning during some gusts.

It's ok, I've considered the GoPro to be about the best out there for the money since before you revealed that you had one. What you mention about the free app is VERY cool since I expect to have an ipad in the next few months.

But please refrain from using terms like "neato", "neat", "groovy", "bit_chin", "gnarly", etc. or I will have to bar you from this thread. Acceptable terms are, "exquisite", "most excellent" (written in a Bill or Ted accent if possible), and, of course, the German "wunderbar". :)

Am scheduled to play tomorrow at 2pm. Crohn's symptoms are steadily worsening, and I had to miss my remicade infusion today because the VA shuttle bus driver to the Miami VA hospital called in sick, so won't be doing that until next Friday, hopefully. So, we'll see how things go. If I'm able to practice/play, then will have some video, and will also try to spend some time doing the exercise/drill that you suggested.

Hi corbind. I decided to do without internet service for a while, as ATT increased my price significantly. I'm typing this at the library. hahaha

Definitely jonesing re internet withdrawal. :) However, am still occasionally uploading music and tennis vids to my YouTube channels (388mg for tennis, and themg49 for music).

Will probably get a cheap tablet pc and thus have free wifi at lots of places. Otherwise, I'm glad to save the money that I'm not giving to an ISP.

Nice to hear from you. I was hitting the ball pretty hard yesterday. Felt good. Maybe I've finally got the old confidence back. Anyway, thanks for all your great suggestions, etc., over the past year or so. I'll probably resume posting again on a regular basis at TTW fairly soon.

Right on Tom, good to see ya again! With the cash you save on internet you can put toward other hobbies (music and tennis). Yea, WiFi is basically everywhere so home service is not absolutely needed. Yea, a fresh year to continue on the journey to the next level. A lot of practice, play, and dare I say FUN is necessary to get there.

Hi there
I am new to this forum and I am also new to GoPro tennis filming. I've got a Hero3 and I have done my first few films just cutting raw sequences from VLC Media Player, uploading them to youtube and compling them into longer clips. I am using 960p 60fps and wideangle (the narrow and medium not being available in 960p mode). After seeing your picture I think I had better move up to 1080p with medium scope as you are correct in saying that one is seeing a bit too much of the walls and ceiling using the wide-angle option. The distortions are not pretty either.

Alternatively, I could invest in a more sophisticated software to crop the films, but I gather that would take a bit too much time to edit. I am not aiming for "professional" quality here, just "good enough" and as smooth/easy as possible.

This is what my current filming/"editing" technique has helped me come up with. Both clips are made using the 960p/60fps/wide setting on the camera.

First one using my old Babolat Pure Storm GT (2011) racket

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4rIsQZ5nXg

...and the second one using my new Prince EXO3 Tour 100 (16 x 18) racket

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZFDR65SiUc

I see that you are also a Prince EXO Tour 100 user. How long have you had it for? I am very happy with mine (changed 3 weeks ago), though I need a bit more time to feel totally at ease with it.

Forgot to ask in the above message. Where exactly is your camera fixed? Is it just at the end of the court or further back? My camera is fixed on the wall, about 6 meters behind the base line.
