Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka, Kei Nishikori, Andy Murray and now Gilles Muller. It's now five players who called it a season in order to rest and heal before 2018. The 34-year-old has been dealing with a left elbow injury tendinitis for almost four months now, after Wimbledon where he beat Rafael Nadal by 15-13 in the fifth set after four hours and 47 minutes before losing to Marin Cilic in the quarters in five sets.

'I took this decision after consulting with my doctors, physioterapists and my team', Muller explained through a statement. 'I came at a stage where the injury can get worse and can influence the start of my 2018 season.

I want to play for a few more years.' He had his best tennis year of the life winning also his first ATP career-title in Sydney in January, triumphing on grass in 's-Hertogenbosch and losing Estoril final. He played his last event of the year in Metz last week losing in his first match to Nikoloz Basilashvili.

I hope Muller gets well, he has been awesome this season, he had elbow problems in 2012 which nearly ended his career so I really hope it isn't anything serious.

Shame.

But overall awesome year.

1st ATP title aged 34.

Wimbledon QF

Trademark career win v Nadal at Wimbledon.

2017 was a real legacy booster for the Luxemburger.

Whilst I wish Muller a speedy recovery, this is what you get for killing yourself to beat Rafa. Darcis was also out for months with shoulder injury straight after beating Rafa.

All these injured players is the result of the ATP slowing down playing conditions and turning every tournament into a grind. Surprised it didn't happen to Wallovic sooner, honestly.

Are Djokovic's recent elbow troubles a delayed result from his 2011 drubbing of Rafa?

If so, I'm sure he regrets every single one of those 7 finals.

sad... he could have gotten some results indoors with his good 2017 form (and even more with the current tragically-depleted field)
