Nadal was injured in that ATP finals match against Goffin. He had tendinitis in the knee and barely could move without pain. His movement was clearly affected. In fact, he skipped the tournament after that match.

Nadal was healthy and fine in their ATP 2020 cup, but just one match in not enough to say Nadal has a matchup problem against Goffin. Goffin is a former top 10 and a quality player, he has victories over Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

Currently back to top 10.

Goffin can beat pretty much anyone on his day. For a good example of this watch the first three quarters of his match with Djokovic in Cincy 2015.

For a good example of why him being able to beat anyone on his day doesn't matter much watch the last quarter of his match with Djokovic in Cincy 2015.

His match with Nadal in Monte Carlo 2017 is another match you could use as an example of what I'm talking about. He may or may not be a bad match up for some people, but nobody is a bad match for David Goffin like his own brain.

Goffin is a very good player, and plays an aggressive baseline game - similar to Nishikori.
Both tend to get ground down in slams, or eventually lose to better players in the quarters, but I like their games.
That said, while Goffin could certainly take Rafa - or almost anyone - out on a given best of 3, I would not like his odds of beating Rafa at the US Open.

And even there goffin needed 3 sets to take him down.
That shows up the matchup advantage lies with Rafa and not Goffin.
One offs like ATP CUP 2020 are not exactly the patterns we should be looking at. Goffin had a win over fed as well (the most inexplicable loss of 2017 for rog) but other than that, fed has been murdering him almost all of the time.

I clearly remember that Cincy2015 match. It was really a weird match. Goffin started redlining and went on to take the 2nd set 6-2, broke Djokovic twice to go up 3-0 in the 3rd; only for Nole to pull out rabbit from the hat and win 6 games in a row to claim the 3rd 6-3.
Lol I was rooting for Nole till final because I wanted rog to take revenge of wimby2015.

His performance in that final was one of the great ones.
