I found this fact really interesting/telling....
In every hard court tournmanet of '08 Nadal has done as well or better than Rog:

AO: Nadal S, Fed S
Dubai: Nadal QF, Fed R32
Indian Wells: Nadal S, Fed S
Miami: Nadal F, Fed QF
Rogers Cup: ...........

what are your guys thought on this fact, do you think its irrelivant, interesting, important, etc...

...And next year Federer will be a very happy man because he can just go for it, while for the first time Rafa will feel it because his been great on clay on grass and wants to great on hard courts thats a lot of points for if he does well on hard court he will feel what Fed has been going through for the past 4 years with great success bar this year, i think he should take it easy

When you look at Nadal's hardcourts, its very impressive how consistent he is. He doesn't get upset early in his events.

Actually, Federer played top 10 players 9 times total this year. He lost 6 times (Nadal,Djokovic,Roddick) on hard court, clay, and grass.
He beat top 10 players 3 times (Djokovic, Nalbandian, Davydenko), all on clay court.

How is that correcting what I said in any way?

It's interesting and true, Nadal has matched everything or bettered Fed in every hardcourt tournament in 2008. But I would like to see him win Toronto or Cincy, better yet, if Nadal only wins one hardcourt event this year let it be the US Open.

Clay has become his best surface! He's not good enough to get to Nadal on hard court in the final rounds. Gosh Fed has become Nadal

Well, I have been saying Federer and Nadal are a same kind but, in a way, he has more motivation to play smaller clay court tournaments than smaller hard courts. Simply because he needs more practice on clay.

Nadal and Federer have not played in HC this year, either. It will be interesting how the "new" Nadal and the "new" Federer match in a hardcourt, because lastly there wasn't much competition, even though it's true last two years they have only seen each other in Shanghai, which is arguably Nadal's worst surface

It means Nadal should be number 1. Why is it so hard for him to get it? Nadal will have to win Toronto to get it.

Even if Nadal wins Toronto, and Cincinnati, he may not get it until after the USO because of the change in schedule. Normally Toronto and Cincinnati are played two weeks later than today, so he will not lose those points until after Cincinnati. And, if he recovers his form and wins the Olympics, he will still have the #1 ranking going into USO. But, if he continues to play like he did last night, all bets are off.

I wouldn't take any of those early season losses seriously. He was clearly coasting imo, but he has looked pretty damn good since the nalbandian clay court match.

Just another loss to another grinder (add to the list of losses to canas, nadal, nalbandian, murray, tough matches with davydenko, of course the younger hewitt). Nothing to be too concerned about.....like if he had lost to someone with the name of soderling, berdych, tursonov etc.

Also notice what simon was saying in the interview, that he was dead tired. Would he have won a 5 setter? Me thinks not.

LOL

So Fed gets beat by someone who is dead tired and you see a positive in that?

I agree Fed's master plan was to coast and let Nadal catch him and catch and steal his wimbledon crown and then his #1 ranking!!

:)

How can Fed have lost if Simon was dead tired  (aggravating circumstances!)

You and miyagi seem to be on the Fed. loss high. The point is at the U.S. open it's best of 5 and it's very likely that simon would have fallen apart if he had to win another set.

He probably wouldn't be dead tired at the US Open, since he would have days off and wouldn't be coming right off of a tournament win.

i think by dead tired, he was referring to how he felt, after the match. keep in mind, he's hot off the indy win, while fed hasn't played competitive tennis in weeks. he's not the old fed who could pull out a victory even when cold, this new fed is more like a normal player

it's not that surprising he lost. he plays worst against these type of players, and he's a bit rusty for having gone a few weeks without really playing competitively, and he didnt have a great first half of the hardcourts go well earlier in the year.

so it's not that surprising he lost. he just needs to get his confidence up.

That's really the question. I just assumed it had nothing to do with his previous tournament because IIRC he never really referred to the other tournament in the interview. But simon can't really end points easily so two tournaments in a row can be tough given his playing style, although the young match was very very easy, so it's hard to say.

I really don't think it makes sense to draw inferences from the first half, Fed. looked really bad in some of those early hard court matches. That's what I meant by coasting, he was playing through mono just to get some points here and there to try and hold the vamoosinator at bay. :)
