Somebody I know very well got bumped from 4.5 back to 4.0. He was a 4.0 until early this year. Here's his USTA record for the last 12 months.

4.0 singles: 4-0
4.0 doubles: 6-1
4.5 singles: 0-1
4.5 doubles: 1-0
8.0 combo mixed as a 4.5: 3-1

I was surprised to see a middle of the road computer rated 4.5 get bumped back down to 4.0 for going 1 and 1 at 4.5.

Sounds like he's right on the cusp, like me.

I can hang and usually win at 4.5 dubs, but not in singles. I remain a 4.0.

Yeah, given that record, I'm surprised the USTA moved him down too. Generally they have been working to increase the number of 4.5 players and decrease the number of 4.0 players. They have been actively making the bell curve flatter. Hmmm. Computer glitch?

This doesnt mean much because it doesnt tell us anything about who he played or what the scores are. Wins and Losses are meaningless....

Computer glitch.
A local 4.0 woman hasn't lost at 4.0 in 2 years, and won many 4.5 matches. Got 2nd in an OPEN tournament. And did not get moved up.
At the same time, a teammate of hers never won all year, and was moved up to 4.5.
Me-thinks the computer switched their records!

USTA ratings do not go by wins and losses. if the i opponent were lesses players and the matches went close it would actually take rating points away and give it to the opponent for being a close match. Game totals is what is being counted not wins and losses. This makes sense why he got moved back to 4.0

The really wierd thing was none of the 4.5 or combo matches were played until USTA announced they were computing the new ratings. Doesn't that mean that he got bumped back down for playing no matches? Perhaps his previous opponents' ratings changed, which changed his?

Oh yeah - here are the 4.5 scores, in case they matter.

Singles was 3-6, 4-6
Doubles was 6-2, 3-6, 7-6

Given that you say he was 4.0 until "early this year", I assume that he was moved up in the Early Start Ratings in March. I know several people who were moved up in ESR, but back down in the year end ratings. My wife got bumped to 4.5 in March, went 5-0 this summer (but all close matches), and got bumped back to 4.0. So far in the winter season she is 3-0 at 4.5.

ESRs cannot use the full benchmark process as the appropriate Championship matches have not been played. March ESRs cannot use any benchmarking as no Championship matches have been played. I assume that when the year end ratings were run including the benchmark process, it moved these ATL players down a bit, causing some to be bumped back to the lower level.

I went 9 out of 21 in the 4.0 singles.
They had a few of the guys playing 4.0 get bumbped to 4.5 so I should be able to compete better if I decide to stay in that division but I also might
play at 3.5 and see if I can get a decent ranking.
