Grigor Dimitrov's chances at SW19

FedEx23

I would love to see Grigor Dimitrov do well in this tournament. If he really is "Baby Fed," born exactly 10 years prior to the Maestro, he would go on to win his first major like Fed did in 2003. But I don't see that happening. There are too many roadblocks ahead of him (in the semis and finals) and even though he is in Ferrer and del Potro's quarter, he tends to beat himself much of the time. Then again, he has a reallllly favorable draw.

What do you guys think?

Definitely has the tools to win but not the maturity and mental toughness, I guess the two go hand in hand.

Another problem is his private life i.e. Sharapova. That maybe hindering his focus somewhat.

Would like to see him do well, only young player I can think of with a one hander and who's game doesn't have a physical emphasis to it.

LOL if Fed, Novak, Murray and Rafa weren't in the draw, then maybe he could have had a very slight chance of replicating Fed's 03 win.

But considering they are his chances are zero. Even if he has a break out performance at a major and gets to the final stages he is not going through any of them at Wimbledon.

Am I the only one who thinks he's a little overrated?

I think all the young guns are hyped a lot these days because people are looking for the Next Big Thing, or just to shake up the fairly rigid caste system now with regards to the top of the men's game.

This year his chances are limited but I can see him doing damage in the future. The big four are miserly in how they give up games in slams. It's funny how so many people around here big up Nadal or Djokovic or Federer and in the same breath denigrate excellent players such as - well anyone outside the top four. Don't they see this is utterly contradictory. The tennis being played now is ridiculous in terms of speed, precision, power and intensity. Dimitrov like a few others is showing some good signs but it's not his time yet. Simple as that.

The next big thing is probably in the 14-16 age range

Agreed. Sascha Zverev might be the one. Only 16 years old and showed tremendous potential.

Rafael Nadal was the last 16 year old (ATP) player that demonstrated such unparalleled precociousness. No one else has come close since Nadal. We'll probably have to wait for a while.

I'm pretty sure he will be a top10 guy, maybe top 5.

Do you think he will have a Federer-like career or a Gasquet-like career when it's all said and done? There is no denying that Grigor's game is exciting and aesthetically-pleasing. Productivity is the question.

I hope so, because I like his game, but he seems to have a problem with consistency.

I have been working on a statistical model based on previous slam winners and their performance each year of their pro career. It is only about 50% complete, but putting in Dimitrov's stats suggests that he will never win a slam. Other guys such as Tomic rank higher (possible single slam winners). I'll post the results up when it's finished.

It may be that Dimitrov faces two lots of competition when he is at his peak: 30yo Djoker/Murray/Nadal and a new, stronger young generation. Other guys slightly older than him, like Delpo and Cilic could also be keeping his ranking down.
