Court of Arbitration reduces Canas suspension to 15 months
May 23, 2006

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (Ticker) - The Court of Arbitration for Sport has reduced the two-year suspension of Argentina's Guillermo Canas for testing positive for a prohibited substance to 15 months.

Canas was suspended for testing postive for the substance hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) at the ATP tournament in Acapulco in February 2005. The suspension took effect on June 11, 2005. Two months later, Canas filed an appeal.

A hearing was held for Canas in January and the panel of arbitrators determined that the player ingested a medication called Rofucal, which was delivered to him by the tournament staff in Acapulco although the tournament doctor prescribed a different medication for him.

Canas took the medication he received without reviewing the content of the box, even though he knew the medication has been through several hands before being delivered to him. But the panel considered that Canas was entitled to rely on the expertise of the independent medical staff provided by the organizers of the Acapulco tournament.

Canas' suspension will now come to an end on September 10.

I'm not a fan nor a hater of Canas but at least it's not a wholesale reduction of the penalty. All things considered, it's still pretty substantial.
