Davis Cup: ITF plans to introduce 18-team World Cup of Tennis Finals in revamp
An 18-nation World Cup of Tennis Finals is planned as the International Tennis Federation (ITF) revamps the Davis Cup.
The week-long event, which would be held in November, has been unanimously endorsed by the ITF's board of directors and could start in 2019.

The ITF has outlined a 25-year, $3bn (£2.15bn) plan with an investment group founded by footballer Gerard Pique.

A two-thirds majority at the ITF annual general meeting will be required for final approval of the proposals.

That meeting is scheduled to take place in Orlando in August.

A proposal to reduce Davis Cup singles matches to the best-of-three sets was rejected last year.

"Our vision is to create a major season-ending finale that will be a festival of tennis and entertainment, featuring the world's greatest players representing their nations to decide the Davis Cup champions," said ITF chairman David Haggerty.

"This new partnership will not only create a true World Cup of Tennis but will also unlock record levels of new investment for future generations of tennis players and fans around the world."

Barcelona and Spain defender Pique said his Kosmos investment group was "thrilled to join in this exciting partnership with the ITF".

He added: "Together we can elevate the Davis Cup to new heights by putting on a must-see World Cup of Tennis Finals featuring the top nations and top players."

The event would be run on a round-robin format before a knockout phase, with matches consisting of two singles and one doubles rubber. Matches will be played over the best-of-three sets.

The 16 World Group nations will automatically qualify for the finals, with a further two nations to be selected.

France is the Davis Cup champion, having beaten Belgium in November.

The title of your thread, of course, has nothing to do with the content. Might as well title this "Did Toni Nadal pressure the ATP into killing Davis Cup?", or "The long arm of Serbian mafia at work in tennis again", or "Poor Murray, got destroyed again at Davis Cup", or maybe "Spice Girls comeback confirmed--will play gig for Queen's 150th birthday". Although, if you really want more clicks and likes, maybe something like "Genie Bouchard training in the nude" would work best here...

The title has everything to do with the article. I think the ITF is worried that the Laver Cup will make the DC, as it is, less appealing to the top players. For years, Rafa has been calling for a change in the way it's organized - the fact that it is spread across the year and it's cramped into the timetable after the slams when the players need a rest.

DC and the Laver Cup will be competing for the top players at the same time in the season.

Rafa has been calling for changes for years. So he can take a bow.

Nadal calls for 'tired' Davis Cup shake-up

14-time grand slam winner Rafael Nadal has repeated his call for changes to the demanding and time-consuming Davis Cup tennis format.

UpdatedUpdated 11 March 2017
Rafael Nadal has repeated his long-standing call for changes to the demanding and time-consuming Davis Cup tennis format, speaking out before starting his campaign at the Indian Wells tournament in California.

The 14-time grand slam winner, seeded fifth at the season's first ATP Masters 1000 event, appears to favour proposals circulating from meetings this week to cut the competition from three days to two, and make matches best of three sets instead of five.

"The ITF (International Tennis Federation) need to make changes, I said a lot of years ago. And still, now there is a new president and new staff that they are trying to make new things, and that's always good," the 30-year-old Spaniard said on Friday.

"We cannot have a Davis Cup champion every year that devaluate the competition."

The recent first round was a disappointment for the ITF, with Serbian world No.2 Novak Djokovic the only participating player from the top 10.

"If the top players are not playing very often, then you are making something not good - you need to change. But the ITF always thinks on the small picture," Nadal added.

He called the competition "a beautiful competition, a very emotional competition".

He also proposed a massive lengthening of the format, producing a winner only every three years.

"I don't mean one-year Davis Cup, one year no Davis Cup. I mean, for example, two ties per year. That will be something reasonable and players will be very motivated to play Davis Cup."

You should support the Laver Cup, it's Federer's baby.

Finally, you say something that makes sense. As a Federer fan, I would never tear down something Federer created to honor a tennis great out of spite towards Nadal. I appreciated Nadal and the other players for participating to help the first Laver Cup a success in Prague. Hopefully, it continues in Chicago. Whether or not, it spearheaded changes in Davis Cup is a very good question. It couldn’t hurt. Competition for the players time is healthy otherwise the game becomes stagnant.

What I find wrong about DC is that one good player can win it single handed for his country because there is no limit as to how many matches a player can participate in so it was unfair to the countries who don't have top 5 players but have a good spread of players on the tour.

Lol

How about it is unfair to countries that have only one good player that has to play several rubbers in a row, because the opponent has several players on his or near his niveau and can rotate them?

The ITF is afraid of the ATP's World Team Cup, not the Laver Cup.

Not really -- you posed a question in your thread title, but made no attempt to answer it, or to explain the evidence that might be relevant. The words "Laver Cup" don't even appear in your OP outside the title!

Did Federer kill the Davis Cup for the sake of his ego and to make more money by creating the Laver Cup?

Yes.

He also skins baby seals alive, but I cannot show you the footage of it that I have, because there is also a secret police that Fedr created to keep the whole thing under a lid.

:(

why am I not surprised to find clayqueen behind this joke of a thread?

get a life. Fedr >>> Bull. deal with it.

Said user and related octo troll have suffered humilation after humiliation on this forum as their trolling has come back and burnt them and are now a laughing stock, shunned even by nadal fans. They are just adjusting to this new loss in status and laughing stock title. Expect a couple junk threads, hysterical posts as they come terms with things
