Lol, is there gamesmanship behind this question? I know personally, I remember everyone I play, but if the person doesn't recognize my face or name on the drawsheet I'm not going to remind them we crossed paths 3 years ago so they can remember what worked/did not work last match.
Do some ask the question even if they know the answer to guage a response?

lol, i've been playing in USTA for close to 20y... i always ask this question
that said, if even 1y has passed, i'd like to think that both of us have become completely different players.
there are guys i played in the 4.0's (10y ago?) that used to be my biggest nemesis... now they are older, can't move, and would hardly be a challenge.
on the flip side, there are "kids" (19-20), that just a few years ago, i was showing them how to properly switch grips for the bh... and now they crush me.
one match recently, i lost in dubs to this 20-30something kid.... turns out their parents were there watching, and they re-introduced themselves as the couple that i'd often see at the public courts... and i remember hitting with their, then middle school son, to be nice. he's now 6'4 (i used to be taller than him at 5'4"), with a monster serve.
