Have we played before?

Lol, is there gamesmanship behind this question? I know personally, I remember everyone I play, but if the person doesn't recognize my face or name on the drawsheet I'm not going to remind them we crossed paths 3 years ago so they can remember what worked/did not work last match.

Do some ask the question even if they know the answer to guage a response?

Dude, it's smalltalk/chitchat. You know, being friendly and social.

If they can't remember for sure whether they played you, they're not fishing for strategic decisions here.

lol, i've been playing in USTA for close to 20y... i always ask this question
that said, if even 1y has passed, i'd like to think that both of us have become completely different players.
there are guys i played in the 4.0's (10y ago?) that used to be my biggest nemesis... now they are older, can't move, and would hardly be a challenge.
on the flip side, there are "kids" (19-20), that just a few years ago, i was showing them how to properly switch grips for the bh... and now they crush me.
one match recently, i lost in dubs to this 20-30something kid.... turns out their parents were there watching, and they re-introduced themselves as the couple that i'd often see at the public courts... and i remember hitting with their, then middle school son, to be nice. he's now 6'4 (i used to be taller than him at 5'4"), with a monster serve.

It's so weird when I go to play someone and I'm like hey I'm Jolly and they say we played twice before singles in 2008 and in a league match in doubles 4 years ago and I won in a super. I'm standing there like I've never seen this man before in my life.

It's the names I struggle with.
I feel like Seinfeld half the time, trying to talk to these people while trying to get them to say their name again because I forgot it after 2 seconds.

Ditto. I don't usually forget a face but I'll forget a name in seconds flat. And sadly with faces, i know that I've seen them before, just not exactly where.

Some people and people's faces are less memorable then others--trying smoking on the changeovers and you'll be remembered.

I'm horrible with names and faces. So I often get opponents telling me that we've played before but I have no idea who they are. But I have a pretty good memory of actual matches, so once they say something like "don't you remember, we played at Grand Park 3 years ago, it was that really hot day and we went three full sets" then it clicks for me and then I can recall the details, so I can respond "oh yeah, you were serving for it at 5-4 in the 3rd and had the match point which I saved with a down the line winner, and then I broke you at 5-6 when you shanked that overhead!" :)
