Okay somewhere in mid 90s Philip Pullman must have said to someone that he is writing a children's book.
That's what I was told too.His dark materials was supposed to be Children's book. But what I didn't know was that children's books were supposed to have:
1.Dark matter and higher physics ideas
2.Alternate Realities
3.Existential questions
4.Sentient Bear ripping off hearts
5. Philosophical challenges to general Christian ideas
6. Challenges to general concept of God
7. A war for heaven
I was caught unawares. I just saw a trailer for a series that had James McAvoy and thought I would read the book before watching. I didn't know anything about the plot.
And I ended up reading the 778 pages of the trilogy within a week.I really loved the book series.
I am a theist. Not a completely devoted one, but I do believe. So it was kinda hard to see how "out of line" Phillip Pullman went, but the entire adventure and great characters just kept me glued.
Even though it's a children's book, it's easily one of the best series I have read recently.
But of course the HBO series effed up. They just didn't get the series. And the forced diversity was off putting.(I am not against the idea of diverse casts, but when you read a book, you read the descriptions of the characters and you form an image of them in your mind, and it's just not right seeing someone who looks entirely different playing them).
Also I was excited for both McAvoy and Dafne Keen. But they disappoint.
I thought Dafne Keen was excellent in Logan, and developed the belief that she was a great child actor, but here she is so bad that it is even wrong for a child actress.
