a centralized server called a tracker, sends peers (users) the information of where the data is, then the torrent program (ie. utorrent) goes out and connects to the other peers and seeds and downloads it from them

it is true, decentralized p2p, utorrent and azureus also have a thing that you can get file and peer locations from each other.

seeds= people that have 100% of the torrent
peers= people that hafve less than that.

are there any sites in particular to get tennis matches off of? if so, which?

and if you could, also explain how this works, how good is it, how often you use it to download your tennis matches or even tv episodes you missed of 24, the OC, smallville, one tree hill, whatever....

alright i downloaded azureus, and i guess i already downloaded a .torrent file earlier this yr, of the federer-nadal montecarlo match, or maybe they are just hightlights, being 19.5KB, and i also just downloaded from the sticky request thead, a link to the madrid highlights, which is 15.1 KB, but in what program do i view it?

so where do i go from there?

and what other sites can i go to to search up stuff like tv episodes and old tennis matches?

i'm sorry if lots of you feel i'm living in like the 1990s or something, i usually always record tennis matches but now i want to watch more than just highlights of matches like masters series' and this is all very new to me

yeah i've spent some time trying to figure this out....its not goign any farther

i went to mininova.org, searched some stuff up, clicked it and downloaded it, it went too fast for what i thought it would go, like an entire season's worth of a tv episode, and now i dont know how to go further

what do you do to be able to view it?

Lol!! Before you start the download it should ask where you want to save the file.. Once the torrent is done the file should be in the place where you chose to save it.

I sent you an email via TW, check your email (it might be in spam folder, some email providers spam emails from tw)

There isn't really any steps.. Just download the .torrent file and than start it in azureus and choose the location where you want to save the files. Once that's done you start the .torrent download, than once the download is finished go to the directory where you saved your file (probably same as .torrent directory). Than just go from there.

Since you saved it where you wanted to save it and it's there what's the problem?

hmmm....so if i clicked the link to that madrid highlights on the TTW sticky, and downloaded it, saving it in a folder...

i just did this right now:

file-open-torrent file

then i added the madrid highlights file
and now its doing something....looks like downloading like on limewire

i really just want to know how to open the file and view it, and what program do i view it on

pNoyr3D

Well that's a video I guess so once it's done it should be in a video format such as .wmv or something and than you could just double click the finished file and view it.

thanks PNoyr3D....you're helping me out with torrents and i'm trying to help you out with tennis apparel with your $80 :)

so how long do torrents usually take in these cases that they are videos?

and what are some sites where i can go to download the video file of tennis matches or long highlights of tennis matches?

1. Download a torrent client (such as Azureus, as mentioned)
2. Download filename.torrent
3. Open filename.torrent by double clicking on it.
4. Azureus will prompt you to choose a save location (such as the desktop or other directory).
5. Choose your directory and click Ok.
6. Sit and wait. (Make sure the correct ports for your torrent program are open, otherwise it might not be able to access any seeds).
7. When the file is done downloading, go to the directory you saved it to and open it. If its a video, itll probably be a .avi or .wmv etc.
8. You cannot preview the file while it is downloading, so just be patient and hopefully when its done youll have what you wanted.

thanks d frank, looks like i'll be waiting for another 2 hrs or so to watch my first torrent file...madrid highlights, then fed-nadal montecarlo

Here's a short thing about download speeds on torrents:

Well when you download torrents there are 2 groups (seeders / leechers). Seeders are the people distributing speed (uploading the torrent). You can become a seeder by completing the torrent download, basically the more seeders the faster the torrent will go. Leechers are basically the people downloading the torrent, they are also taking speed from the seeders. The seeders distribute their speed to basically most of the leechers. The seeders speed varies on their upload speed of the internet company they are using.

Well I am currently downloading the Madrid Highlight reel your talking about and the speed is going only around 18kB/s.. So it will take awhile, that's because there is only 1 seeder (person who is uploading the torrent).

Basically all I am saying is that the more seeders (people who are uploading) the faster the download will go.

For example I have downloaded a movie before and it goes usually around 300 kB/s because of so many seeders.

It's like Limewire, but different. With Limewire, you open up the application, search for something, than click on the search result to download.

With bittorrent, you search for the file/media/torrent by going to a tracker site, like torrentz.com or piratesbay.com.

There, you type in what you're looking for. For instance, The Amazing Race Season 9 Episode 7. The search results come up. There might be 3 or 4 different versions of this episode available. Some might be in avi form, some like great, some are crappy, whatever. The same exact file (say, in avi form, really good video and sound, made by some guy in Texas...) could be available from several different trackers.

So you click on one of the choices, say, a 700 megabyte file from Piratesbay.com. You click on "Download this torrent." What you'll download is nothing more than a tiny file, and all this file does is allow your bittorrent client (again, the client is an application, like Limewire except you can't search with it...) to connect to the file you want to download, in this case The Amazing Race.

So you open your client, I use Azureus. Inside Azureus, you "open" that file you downloaded, the tiny file that allows you to connect to The Amazing Race. You choose a location to download the file to, perhaps a folder called "TV Shows" and that's it.

sounds good...i've now got 5 files downloading....including fed-nadal french open semis and tms miami final of last yr, and madrid highlights of course, fed-baghdatis aussie open final, and fed-agassi 2005 aussie open qtrfinal

all are about 3 hrs from being done, but the madrid highlights are showing 10 hrs??

should i set the max up speed to 75kb/s or change any other settings to increase download speed?

i just paid more attention...a few of the files are saying 3 or 4 days and like 8 or 9 hrs....

is this normal? how long are even like 2 GB files supposed to take?
and what can i do to increase the speed?

pNoyr3D

Yes that is normal.. The more files you are downloading simultaneously (at once) the slow they will all be. I suggest you pause 3 or 4 of them and leave 1 or 2 downloading.

Also, it could be that there are not many seeders with the torrents. How many seeders are in each file?

Also, did you read my post?

psamp14

which post are you talking about....

but i will get it down to just 1 or 2 files then downloading

one file has 6 seeds and 11 peers, the rest have 1 or 0 seeds, with 2 or 3 peers

Oh okay, if there are 0 seeds that basically means it will not download because there are no one uploading the files.

Post #24 is what I was talking about.. Save you time, here it is.

Oh.. How fast is yours going? Cause I am already 45% done with that file and around 3 hrs to go, going around 18 kB/s.

It's the Madrid06_hilights.divx right?

yes its the same file, mine is 51% done, but going between 12.8 to 13.1 kb/s...showing 4 hrs to go...

i dont think i am going to let this go tonight.....if i stop it, and do it tomorrow morning, does it resume whatever it was before? like if i stop it right now at 51%, and start it tomorrow morning, does it start again at 51%?

because i've got some files that are like 1.31 GB and 2.24 GB, and 2.33 GB....

this stuff really takes forever doesnt it! the quality better be good...how is the quality?

psamp14

Hall of Fame
right now it is little more than 200mb downloaded out of 382.28mb

when the peers says 0(2) i'm guessing it means 2 peers since 2 of us are downloading it...but what is the 0 for?

whats the outside number mean and the number in parenthesis mean?

Okay, if you stop it, yes it will resume where it was before. I don't know how the quality is since I am not finished yet with the download.

In the peers side 0(2), the 0 means you are currently not uploading the torrent to any of the leechers. Once your done with the torrent you should help upload, if you do help upload and there is for example 1 person in the peers 0(1), once finished and you are uploading it would be 1(1) since you are uploading for them. If it was like 15(34) than you are uploading to 15 people out of 34.

Here it is simplified, lol..
Outside number = People you are uploading to
Inside number = How many people downloading the file.

-----------------

Well i'm going to bed, lol.. Gotta wake up for school.

hmm, i got it...and i'll make sure to be uploading files i already have, making it easier on the others who are downloading

i am now at 55% but the rate has gone very low...is there any way to increase the speed?

Usually, it's an MPEG or AVI, and it's ready to be viewed when it's done. Sometimes, it's a RAR file, in which case you have download a free application that allows you reassemble the RAR files into a coherent movie file. Not going to get into it now, but it's pretty easy.

With bittorrent, the more you share, the faster your speed becomes over time. Also, the speed depends on how many seeds (seeds are people with the entire file on their computer, sharing with others) and leechers (leechers are people who have part of the file and are in the process of downloading the remainder...) there are.

Most places will have a little graph indicating the "health" of the seed, how fast it is, but in my experience it's a bit of a crap shoot. I've had incredible download speeds from sites with less than 15 people total sharing the file. I've had super slow speeds downloading a file with hundreds, and over a thousand, leechers and seeds. You never know.

One thing is that when you first start downloading, it usually starts off slow. Then it gradually builds up pace as you have more of the file to share with others.

so i just finished the download for a spiderman torrent, and i use azureus,...and so its finished 100%, and now it went to the 2nd area where i think its seeding...but for my other torrents which completed downloading i could click the file and open it and view it right away

why is this not opening? when i click open file it opens in the explorer...not the actual movie

any help please?

i'm bumping this topic...bump

anyone know what the problem is? referring to my post before this one...i just downloaded a spiderman torrent which is 1.36 GB, and now it got placed in the seeding thing i think, highlighted in blue...this happens with every downloaded torrent but i can always right click and open it

for this one when i right click and open it just opens it in explorer, not in windows media player, automatically playing

any help would be appreciated, thanks

double bump...i just noticed the file itself is 1.36 GB, and so why is it saying 2.15 GB under the uploaded column?

someone please respond! i want to watch spiderman!

psamp14

now the upload column is saying 2.22GB

if the file is 1.36 GB where is 2.22GB coming from? whats that extra like..0.86GB ?

It's how much of the file you have shared in a total-data-size format. For example, if 1 person downloaded the entire file from you (1.36GB), and another person is in the middle of downloading the file from you and currently at 63% (.86GB downloaded), the total amount shared by you is the sum of 1.36GB and .86GB, which is 2.22GB.

psamp14

thanks for responding....but my real question is how come i cannot open and view it after it has completed the download...its 100% done...1.36GB downloaded

i've downloaded ams madrid highlights and once it completed i could right click it, and click "open file" and i was able to view it

same with wimbledon the movie, and a federer-agassi AO 2005 qtr final match

so whats wrong with this spiderman torrent?
