How much are you spending on food per week during the pandemic?

Sentinel

I don't spend in USD but I can compare notes with @Sentinel

In general though - I don't eat organic, I don't eat much fruit...just the occasional fruit juice after a run. I am vegetarian so no expenses on meat and I cook my own food. I buy perhaps a candy or some chips once in a way and that's about the only outside food I have. Most of my food eaten outside is through office lunch or dinners. I haven't made a calculation per se but I don't think I spend all that much on food. Pandemic or not, this is my routine.
Pretty much the same here. I do sometimes order organic veggies from bigbasket. Also organic flour and ragi flour. We do use some olive oil and my mum liked olives and yes she does like Pringles with her drink. Those are about the expensive items but nothing has changed. Otherwise it's just veggies bread milk and a little bit of fruit. BB is usually cheaper and better than the road side vendor. Good discounts.

I posted the same question on my company's forum and I got about 10 responses back, mostly from single people. They average about $400 per week for food during the pandemic. One response from a family of 4 they they average about $850 per week for a family of 4 but that person in the company makes twice my salary.

What on earth are these people buying  ? I rarely even spend 400 a month on groceries as a single guy.

Do takeout 2-3 times a month.

I f***ed up royal. I just made a calculation because I have been stocking up on food, and I spent about $800 in the past 30 days, and I calculated yesterday that that only gives me enough calories for 45 days, so I am doing something wrong.

Still contemplating 2 avocados per day per person of OP's household. And no one gets sick of avocados? What are the different ways you prepare them, or it just a big guac-fest?

60 avocados a week?

We only eat avocados as a luxury, perhaps 5 a month, because it's not a sustainable and has serious environmental consequences.

More than double since we got two very hungry young men back home from college. Since it may be the last time we have them home for such a long stretch, we've decided to go ahead and spend the money and feed them well - lots of meat on the menu.

If people do not eat avocados, people in Chile will not have jobs and will go hungry. I do realize that just one Avocado consumes about 85 gallons of water and the model is not sustainable. But until then, I will continue to eat them.

We do not eat guacamole. We have one avocado along with oats, banana, and blueberries for breakfast. We have another avocado in the afternoon as snack in the form of smoothie. We love the taste of avocado and never get sick of it.

They are single people so they order take out and delivery almost 100% during the pandemic. $400 per week includes about $200 in tips to help delivery people in this very tough time.

Oh okay so take out & delivery is included in that. 400 a week is still pretty insane to me, but that's a bit more sensible.

Thank you for the response. I also enjoy avocados and I realize they are healthy, but I hadn't eaten them during breakfast or in a smoothie. You have expanded my mind on the fruit. A friend of mine makes a salad dressing with them though, which was very good, and that would be another avo-intensive food. The problem I usually have is the ripeness, whether they are ripe enough to eat and how easily they spoil.

Maybe I'll start a thread on avocados some day or dig one up that was started in the 1940s when TTW first came online.

You should try avocados with steel cut oats with almond milk in the morning for breakfast. Add in some sunflower seed, slice almonds and a banana with the oats and it is the healthiest breakfast bar none.

Definitely put avocado into the smoothie. It takes too much time for me to eat all the fruit so I blend all of them into smoothie. For the smoothie, I add the other avocado, pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, banana, some low fat yogurt, a little bit of New Zealand Manuka honey, and most importantly, kale. That becomes 48oz of smoothie. I drink 24 oz around 10:30am as snack and another 24oz around 4pm as snack before dinner @6:30pm.

Science answered this question already, and it is impossible to get sick of avocados.
I wonder if the government will provide us with testing kits to determine our optimal avocado threshold. It's too bad there are no more daily briefings so we won't be able to find out. I will have to contact my congressperson with plenty of smiley emojis and exclamation points in order to convey my enthusiasm.

I'll go first. Family of five, husband, wife, 18 years old boy, 17 years old daughter and a 19 years old nephew staying with us. Grocery shopping at WholeFood, Organic meat and vegetables market, and online ordering. No take out or food delivery during the pandemic.

Just checked the bill yesterday and we spend about $900USD/week for a family of five

Lol NO one should be spending $900 a week on food. You're just flexing. As wild as I eat it's still about $10-30 a day.

I saw what you said lol you're still spending way too much weekly, or at least more than you have to be, organic or not.

LOL...Are you currently living with three young adults :(? Schools are closed and with everything is locked down, there isn't much for them to do other than working out, play tennis and eat A LOT :(.

Can you give me some advise on how I can save $ on grocery?

I can't cook even if my life depends on it :(. Fortunately, my wonderful wife does all the cooking.

Everyone generally eats pasta for lunch. My wife and I are vegetarians most of the time but the kids are meats and seafood eaters. They usually have bow ties pasta with Salmon or Tuna, clams, muscles, jumbo lump crab meat, langostino lobster, shrimp, etc.. For dinner, they have either steak, fish, chicken, or soft shell crabs. Butcher steak or commonly known as hanger steak is about $15 per pound and the boys eat about 2 lbs and girl 1 lb. Soft shell crab is not cheap either, around $3 per crab and they eat about five or six each. The rest of the organic fruits and vegetables are expensive too.

I also notice that I can save money by buying Avocados from Walmart instead of Whole Food but the Avocado size from Walmart is smaller and not as fresh as WF. Avocado goes about $1.50 at WF.

I have been spending more on some sites just to get free shipping. I normally buy non-food items I can wait for (toothpaste, deodorant, etc) off Amazon Prime but it has been easier and cheaper ordering from Walmart. You just have to spend $35 to get free shipping so I end up buying a few extra things that I normally wouldn't. I won't set foot inside a Walmart even during normalcy because that place is anything but.

Groceries I am still spending less
Eating out, which is now Eat Street or UberEats is a little less but I still do it twice a week.

- 60 Avocados per weeks (2 avocados per person per day),
- Apples, Orange, Kale, Strawberries, bananas, pineapple, blueberries, (7 serving per person per day)
- Broccoli, Cauliflower. green bean, Squash (8 serving per person per day),
- Salmon, Tuna, jumbo lump crab meat, steak (rib eye), chicken, tiger shrimp,
- quinoa, spaghetti,
- some wine, harmless coconut water

60 avocados?! Wtf?! I'm hoping those are the small ones and not the large ones because the large avocados can run $1 - $1.50 each. No reason to be buying that many per week. I ***** love avocados and even I only eat 4-5 per week.

900 dollars a week??? Wow I did not know food was so expensive in the US!

I guess since he's feeding 5 people, 3 of which are teenagers and he's also really loading up on the super expensive stuff like fruits - avocados, strawberries, etc. It can be quite expensive to eat healthy, but yeah 900 dollars a week is ****ing outrageous. No reason to be spending that much on food when you can't go anywhere and I'm guessing the exercising has been curtailed by a consisderable margin due to gyms and schools being closed.

yes, schools my company offices are closed but I still have access to the gym at my work place because I am considered "essential" that I can access the building 24x7 so my kids go there with me to work out. I also have access to a private tennis courts 24x7 so they play there. For a lot of people, life has been completely upside down but fortunately for my family, life is still pretty good and we're very grateful for that. My local tennis club was opened a week ago but only for private lessons and no clinic.

Have you possibly considered something cheaper to maybe cut down on the avocado intake and save some money? Maybe peanut butter or something if you want the healthy fat.

Sounds like he makes a million dollars a year in salary... Spending $900 a week on food times 52 weeks per year = roughly 47k on groceries alone. Then you gotta add in the rent/mortgage and utilities, plus he also mentioned that he and his kids are all members at a private tennis club. Yeah this dude is probably living in a million+ dollar home.

I have a cousin who hates avocados lol. I never understood his objection to them because its not like he hates other creamy textured foods like ice cream, etc. For some unknown reason he can't stand the creaminess of avocados. It's really bizarre.

LOL.... Perfectly a fair question. Most of the items we buy at WF are 365 brand. The fruit and vegetable at WF cost about the same as other grocery chains but the meat and seafood cost a little more than other places but they are expensive in general

My wife and I are "almost" vegetarians but the three young adults are not and they are eating like there is no tomorrow especially during the pandemic. Since there are no schools, online schools do not count, they have so much time to work out, play tennis and practice music instruments. All of them work out seven days a week from 8am-11am and then play tennis from 4pm-7pm with each other. Everything is still shutdown where I am at.

They had pasta for lunch yesterday with lobster, clam, muscles, shrimp and had rib eye steak for dinner along with lot of fruit and salad and vegetable. That's a lot of money a full month.

Btw, they are very fit because they are active six hours everyday.
I find Whole Foods not great as not all foods there are whole foods and most of it isn’t even organic. Many thinks shopping there is healthy since that is what they advertise. Many people are fooled by their advertising, how they promote themselves. I had a hard time eating all organic when I shopped there. Most of it isn’t. Can rather be bought somewhere else to a cheaper price. They sell a lot of not healthy food. Most of the fish for example is farmed and not great at all. Most of the cheeses and even a lot of the veg and fruits too aren’t organic. Can’t even get an organic coffee ready made brewed, not a salad or sandwich. Look at the labels.

Have only ordered takeoff six times in the last six weeks, so I know i am saving a lot more money than pre Covid-19 lockdown. The tips have been as big or larger than the bill as my guilt of not doing more takeoff crosses my mind. Those in these restaurants need business but have never been much of a takeout guy.

My shopping is 95% at Publix / Costco making Gluten Free baked spaghetti, homemade GF pizzas with the GF Crusts from Costco as the base, tacos, Morey's Wild Alaska Salmon (Costco) and those GF chicken sausage from Aidell's (Costco), fresh long green beans, and salad have made my rotation pretty uninspiring but sustainable.

Long green beans, romaine leaf salads make up most of my green veggies.

Apples, Oranges, or Bananas, Simply Orange Pineapple OJ and one 1/2 of a homemade GF Turkey with a hard fried egg with lettuce and Palmetto Jalapeño Pimento Cheese [emoji2] (Publix or Costco) breakfast sandwich most mornings. Eat the other 1/2 after tennis as a late lunch or the next day after heating in toaster oven in the aluminum foil it was wrapped in.

My GF pizza:
Costco Sabatto's GF frozen pizza serve as the base (3 per box for $15).
Boar's Head pepperoni, sliced boiled red potatoes from Publix , dried kale from Costco(6 packs per item), yellow & red peppers, sweet onions and Mexican Style Cheese. Yep, sliced boiled red potatoes on pizza. [emoji848][emoji4]

No tofu, cottage cheese, sour cream, cream cheese or mushrooms ever for me please. [emoji113][emoji2961] But the one thing that gets me through Covid-19 is:

Wright's thick Applewood Smoked Bacon [emoji2]Life is too short to exclude Bacon.
I love Costco! So many good deals on good products!

4 adults, $200/week. We could cut that in half pretty easily though. We typically have between 25 to 100 pounds of rice. We have oats, dried beans. We get day-old veggies at the local grocery store. We do go to Whole Foods from time to time but will stop if they start having lines there. Trader Joes is difficult to get into now.

Some of you guys are going to get fat eating so much food. Does anyone here garden or hunt.... go fishing. You dont have to pay so much for nutritous food.

Here... this is one of my staples...I even grow and harvest them.

I am saving a lot of money on the commute - train fair & gas and also, I used to buy salad, bagel or eat out with colleagues at work so definitely saving quite a bit there.

Haven't dined out or ordered in on the weekends for more than a month and half now so another saving there.

Hasn't shopped much either.

I have a friend who grew up on an avocado farm. They had a golden retriever that had the shiniest, healthiest coat I've ever seen. He was also the most obese Golden I've seen. The family said he roamed the property and gorged on avocados that had fallen to the ground. ;)
