How much do coaches make/earn?

I've always wondered how much different coaches make, if it's a percentage of what the player earns or a monthly fee, or something combined?

Safin had a classic quote about Wilander being his coach and it was something like "I pay for everything". It sounded like Wilander was expensive, although he didn't say it out loud.

I simply have no idea, and since there are a million tennis fanatics here, I thought I'd ask. :)

Depends on the level.

Someone in the top 100 or so, there is probably a flat fee, plus the player pays the coaches travel expenses and food.

Somebody in the top 15 is where the money comes in. The player pays a flat fee, plus the coach can get a percentage of winnings for certain tournaments. There may be bonus money if a player wins say an MS tourney or a GS. Usually a coach however wont see any money from a player's endorsement or sponsorship deals.

This article breaks it down: http://www.forbes.com/2008/08/22/brad-gilbert-coaching-tennisbiz08-biz-sports-cx_bg_0822coach.html

Nice article, much appreciated.

I guess a guy like Stefanki makes more than other coaches, he must be one of the guys that makes the most. Would be nice to see how much Severin makes since commentators always portray him as "friend" and travel partner of Federer, not solely the coach.
Same goes for uncle Toni.

Ive noticed that the clothing brand offers coaches, especially in the WTA, are these guys offered bonuses aswell or are they solely dependant on the salary given by for example Adidas?

Well, the article did say sometimes a coach can piggyback their way into an endorsement deal with the same company the player has.

But, I think you would see this with players who have a long standing relationship with a coach i.e. Davydenko, Nadal, Djoko, etc.

Im sure Fed works out different arrangements . Probably since his coaches are part time, he has a flat rate.

Then why is it that the coach is often seen wearing the sponsor's clothing in the player's box? Is it that he just gets some apparel for free to put on in such situations? A Nike player with an Adidas-clothed coach in the front row would look bad.

I said from a *player's* endorsement deal.

That doenst mean they cant broker their own deal.

The article was written by Brad Gilbert. Much as he is disliked by some, he knows a lot about tennis having been both a player and coach of elite players.

Oh, I imagine Sevrin gets paid, and handsomely so.

First of all, Roger got pretty miffed in the past when Sevrin was refered as a 'hitting partener' - Roger has refered to him as 'his coach' in the past. It may not be the traditional coaching relationship, but Roger isn't a traditional player.

Plus, the man needs to make a living, he's with Roger year-round, Roger pays him for what he's doing and I imagine he pays for all his traveling+hotel expenses, as well.

I'm reviving this old thread for another coaching question about salaries, although this being about the fitness coach.

How much does the regular fitness coach (helping a top 50 player) earn?

But my main question is how much Adidas pays Gil Reyes. He seems to be the flagship of Adidas coaching programme and without him, a player like Verdasco wouldn't have reached top 10 in any point of his career to be honest.

Does anyone have a good clue about these two questions? I would actually not be surprised if Reyes made more than most of the regular coach on the ATP, not including top 10.

As far as I know Toni isn't paid any flat fee, expenses only. Rafa's father Sebasian manages his property and investments in exchange for coaching services to Rafa. Toni also has some endorsement deals (Iberostar for sure, maybe something else)

Hmm that article from Brad Gilbert was pretty cool, although I don't really like him. Interesting stuff.

Severin Luthi is a close and long time friend and supporter. He does not have a traditional coaching relationship with Rodge, part time or full time.
Severin is Roger's coach, and full time.He travels with him everywhere, and Roger says that Severin has helped him a lot since he started to be coached by Severin.
Severin even watches other matches to make observations about it.

Gulbis wears adidas and Gumy is sponsored by Fila.
However the companies give clothes(or sponsor if you may) to the player's coach, and why not to take it,or even get a litlle money for?

Fed and Roche parted because Fed was too cheap and only payed him a paltry amount, he probably pays Luthi in doughnuts - Mirka's left over doughnuts.:)

I think this is correct. I remember reading an article in Tennis magazine where they interviewed Uncle Toni. He mentioned that he didn't want to be paid so he isn't an employee of Rafael. Uncle Toni didn't want to be in an uncomfortable situation when it came to money. I'm sure he has other sources of income and doesn't need Rafael's money. As far as other coaches go, I think it does depend on the level of player (as others have mentioned) and the coaches choice of payment. For some, they get paid per day/week/month if they don't travel. Traveling coaches always get expenses paid. Lower level players often can't afford a traveling coach so they pay one when they are training. The superstars like Stefanki, Gilbert, and Cahill often get a percentage of the prize money. Not a bad living, but I think Stefanki doesn't do it for the money. He's got a nice home in a nice part of San Diego (RSF) where Jelena Jankovic is also building her dream home.

He said he is part of the family business with his brother or something like that - so he gets paid indirectly through other arrangements. Basically, he doesn't work at that business but rakes in the profits, and coaches Rafa instead.
