How Not To Botch A Trip To The Playoffs

Been to the playoffs? Ever captain a team there? If so, I'd like to hear your advice and suggestions.

Last year, we went to 6.5 Combo Districts. I had never captained at Districts before, and looking back on it, there are some things I would do differently.

Most importantly, I would balance out the match play among the players better. Even in doubles, a fresh set of legs beats a slightly more skilled tired set of legs. The physical demands of two sets of doubles are not large, but the mental toll is more wearing than I had anticipated. Not to mention how I don't want to endure another 364 days of players telling me that I erred in not playing *them* enough at playoffs.

What is difficult now is figuring out how to do the line-ups. For instance, we have a morning match and an afternoon match. One of my weaker players wants a particular match, but for tactical reasons I need very strong players for that match. Should I inconvenience her by telling her she needs to play the inconvenient match?

Also, we will play two team matches on the first day and then if we advance another two team matches on a different day. That's six doubles pairs per day. I don't have six superhuman doubles teams; some teams are vulnerable to being beaten. Should I put all of the weaker players out against the weakest of our two opponents, or should I put out one weak pair against each opponent, hoping for the skin-of-the-teeth 2-1 win?

I also have a player who does not want to participate in the indoor practice we are having this weekend because indoor court time costs $23.00 (rain is in the forecast). What am I to do with this? Play someone else who is willing to pay to come to practice? Or just let her not practice and play her anyway, even though she is in desperate need of some practice IMHO? I would feel really weird getting another player to pay to do the practice and then not playing that player . . .

Gawd, I will be glad when this is over. If I never captain another team to playoffs after this, I will be fine with that.

You might do the check to see if this is really over $23 by offering to pay for her practice. If it's really the money she'll take you up on it. But then you have to worry if she has the money to travel to playoffs. If you do get another player to take her place I'd feel I had to offer pay for their court time, as it would be unfair to make them pay and not play them in playoffs.

That was exactly my sentiment when the first team I captained went to sectionals. I had not factored travel agent, car mechanic, and road room mate referee into my captaining skills.

I think all your questions depend on what "type" of team you created.

I have seen competely recreational or fun teams. I have seen teams who just want to go to the playoffs and once they get there it's a party. Then I have seen teams formed exclusively for trying to win the playoffs (in my case: state).

You can avoid alot of these issues by making the team mission statement public knowledge at the beginning of the season. That way there's no question about your decisions come playoff time.

If you guys are just there to have fun don't stress about all this stuff...if you guys are there to win, don't stress about your players and put out the best lineup that you think you need to win each match.

About the $23...eh...I don't really have an opinion on that...you could offer to pay if you want or just let it go.

One thing I'd be careful of Cindy is deciding which of your opponents is the weaker/stronger. When my team went to playoffs I looked at all our opponents and selected the strongest based on their win/loss ratio, their opponents ratings, et al. I thought I was making an informed decision. The team that I felt was the strongest (they were undefeated) was the only team we beat while the team that I thought we'd beat easily (no where near undefeated) ended up going to Nationals. In other words, the perceived stronger team came from a relatively weak area while the weaker one came from a very competitive area.

I know! Which leaves me wondering how on earth to decide who plays what match. I feel like I should give it more thought than just putting the names in a hat. :)

I guess that counsels in favor of putting out two strong teams and one weak team for each match . . . .

Ya know, I would be honored to play on a team captained by you one of these days. Know why? Because you think and worry about these things and how your decisions will affect your team and its individual parts/players.

That's good leadership in my book.

Hey, thanks!!

Maybe we can be doubles partners someday. I mean, the fact that those two TW Mid-Atlantic kids wiped the floor with us doesn't mean we can't play some doubles, right? ;)
