I want to hit against an ATP100 for 30 mins.

Has anyone ever attempted this?
I just want to see what it feels like to hit against the pace of a pro.
Is ATP100 too ambitious?
Please refrain from "You won't be able to tell the difference b/w 5.0 and ATP100"
Maybe it does not have to be ATP100, but I want the real deal.

I want a full 30 mins, not 5 or 10.
Rally, serves, and some point play.
Then post the video so the world can have a laugh.

Let's say I am willing to put upwards of $3000 behind this.

How could I pull this off?
Can I get one to fly into town and I put them up at a hotel for a night?

Can I go to the US Open Qualifiers and ask one of them if they want to make some quick money?
Hop in a car and go find a court ? All I hear is that players outside of the ATP200 are all broke.
Could I pay them $x to be their warm up partner for 30 mins at the tournament?

Another idea is that I see $10k tournaments where real pros apparently play.
$10k? All that travel and overhead for a chance at $10k? Expected value is like $1k.
I can guarantee $10k (get 3-10 friends to chip in $1k-$3k each, and instead of playing a tournament,
he just hits for 30 min. sessions, and walks away with $10k for a days work.
Anyone ever done anything like this?

With good money, you could convince them.

You can ask Tomic, but he would first count the $3000 you offer and then proceed to tank.

I think it's a service some of them should offer. Would be a nice money spinner.

$3000 is not going to get a top 100 player to fly out to you.

$10k almost definitely would get a 100-200 ranked player, assuming you traveled to them or they didn't have to go too far

Why not make a holiday of it?

Grab a flight to Umag, Croatia visit the Goran Ivansevic academy and hit against up and coming ATP hopefuls here. Plenty of folk in the 5.5 ~ 6.0 tier here.

40€/hour.

And if you’re able to keep up, will be free.

Other academies you can easily hit with up and coming 5.5+ juniors/pros:

Hope Tennis Academy, Taiwan
La Manga, Spain

I've been destroyed by a local 5.5.
It was barely tennis
Maybe his strokes are not so different than ATP100.

But part of the money is the novelty of seeing myself hitting against a known player.
Even if the Croatia kid hits harder.

At the club I've just joined there's a guy who's a hitting partner for Tiafoe, some other guys that play Futures as well I think. Not seen any of them hit yet.

Huge difference between 5.5 and 6.0

Anyone in the top 150 should be 6.0’ish. But NTRP isn’t an exact rating.

For me these guys in Croatia hit hardest and just about murder every ball coming at them. I’ve never seen a stronger tennis culture than this one.

I would wager 5.0 here in Umag is 5.5 or even 6.0 back in Toronto.

go to a futures tourney...
ask the losing pro if they want to make $x/hr to just hit
probably will be atp300-500

go to a challengers, do the same
probably will be atp100-200

go to us open qualies, do the same
probably will be atp200

go to us open quallies, to a practice court (eg. i've seen fed/goffin, nadal/cueva, etc... courside, like 5-10ft from me, and ask <insert pro player> if you can pay them $3k to hit for 30m
probably will be atp100

tell me when you go, i'll document/record :)

This is the dumbest thing ever. Here's the rub: even if you were to somehow convince an ATP pro to hit with you for 30 minutes, they wouldn't be trying, because it wouldn't be worth the energy expenditure. They'd see you flail around, and just hit medium-pace balls right down the middle so you could think you were better than you were. There's no point to them wasting their energy.

Where do you live? Plenty of retired pros offer lessons and can probably maintain the pace of a pro for a half hour and $100. By the way, the idea that retired tennis pros won't get out of bed for less than $300 is ridiculous. These are retired athletes, most of them are broke.

I did in the past but not anymore.

I'm a 4.0 (4.5 on the odd day when everything's working) and hit with someone who's 5.5 once. The dude was literally toying with me even though I still won some games. The difference between him and a top 100 pro is multiple times bigger than between me and the 5.5 player.

Like when hiring a contractor, I will pay half up front.
I will also state my intent, to feel the real pace of ATP.
Not to feel good. I will taunt him if his shots are too easy.
And this will be in front of the public, filming.

"Is that all you got?"
"Hey, I'm going to title this video, '4.0 gets points off ATP50'"

As for energy, I will wait until after the real match, once he's DQ'ed.
He will have no reason to hotdog, and he might even have frustration to vent.

I hit with Mark Philippoussis back in like 2010 for a solid hour. I’m in that weird 4.0-4.5 range where I have my moments.
Let me tell you, it’s a humbling experience. The pace and weight of the ball is something I hadn’t seen before. Caught me off guard. What truly blew me away was how he hit that pace and weight every single time, not like the 2 out of 10 that my normal partners hit. It was every time.
Returning serve, well that’s whole other story, next to impossible.

Your best bet is to find a player who is retired, if you’re searching for current you’d probably have to go to a challenger tourney and hit up the practice courts and start flashing your money.

This reminds me of a story about Snooker I heard. (Probably one of the commentators told it in a match.)

Apparently there was some charity auction to win a frame with Stephen Hendry. Someone paid a ridiculous amount for this. Then played the frame, where Hendry cleared up on his first visit iirc.

:D

I just want to rally and feel that pace.

I won't even bother with ROS.

So a 5.0 in Umag is 150ATP like a 6.0 in Toronto is 150ATP?

And you are still stupid enough to conflate them taking it easy and hitting medium pace balls to you being able to tell the difference that his shots are too easy. You have no conception. Even the guy who hit with Flipper in this thread, I bet Flipper was only going at 50-60 percent.

If you want to experience even an inkling of what it can be like, and I mean a really really REALLY small inkling, go find an open tournament in your area and enter it. You'll likely end up getting to face a D-I played who will run you ragged.

I think it's not necessary to play with a top 100 to "feel" the strokes of a pro. I've hit with Pere Riba (former world 65) and a couple of guys which are around the world number 1000 (Gokberk Ergeneman and Sylvester Emmanuel) and I can say that the pace is almost identical, so you don't need to look for a top 100 guy to have a good experience.

If you ask me about how it feels, I would say that the ball goes a bit faster than the one from a decent junior. I'm 17 and I'm used to play against very good players (some of them just playing their first Futures matches), and the difference between these guys and the pros is how intense and consistent a pro is able to play ALL THE TIME, how much you will have to run every single point and, obviously, you will have to get ready for a serve that you just won't find in non-pro players.

Good luck OP, I hope you find someone to hit with.

I've hit with/played some ATP players and challenger/futures players and it was a great experience.

@Arafel
For the record, I have a 5.0 and 5.5+ that I can hit with.
In a set against the 5.5, he didn't even have to try.
He could make it so I never touch the ball with my racket.
But, that isn't the point.

@Adrià Cot
And I agree that I can find the pace of an ATP100 probably even in D1.
I bet there are D1s who hit harder than ATP100, and never made it past D1
Fed is hardly the hardest hitter of all time, yet he is the GOAT.
Heck, he slices his BH like he's Chris Evert LLoyd, so that isn't the point either.

Years ago one of the tennis writers (don't remember who) played a set against Martina N. He won 1 point. He was rushing the net and tripped. Her shot went long. She said "well left".

I'm a solid 4.10718 and I've hit with a few juniors in 15/16 yr. old range. Different game than when I started (wood racquets). So much more weight on the ball.

If I did this, I would actually train for this session.
I would move beyond the 4.0 caliber hitting I am used to.

I would do 3 rally only sessions with @nytennisaddict 4.5,
then a 5.0, then the 5.5 ....2 weeks (mostly hit right to me)

Then I would strap a goPro on my head and crash the US Open qualies with $3k in my pocket,
and I would tell him to hit through me.

Of course, I would want to negotiate the price,
so I would have $1k in 3 different pockets.

It's not just about the pace of the ball at the higher levels though.
It's the ability to defend, construct a point, movement, etc.
