If pete sampras came back and trained with 100% effort for 2 years?

If pete sampras came back and trained with 100% effort for 2 years and didn't get injured would he win a slam or 2? I saw a dvd of his 1999 wimbledon final versus agassi and i think in that match pete sampras had the best backhand in the world, best serve and best forehand. Blasted winners everywhere!

Sampras would get absolutely battered, it would be on the verge of embarrassing.

Somehow, I knew it from the very beginning...

However, my lips are sealed. I look forward to your future ventures incognito. Bravo.

You'd probably have to pay him about 4 billion dollars to entice him to go back into training for 2 years.

I wish! In wimbledon 99 final sampras had the best backhand i've ever seen in my life. Blasted backhand winners like a crazy man everywhere. Was unbelievable and i will never forget seeing the dvd of it. I watched it 3 times already.

Nope...the game has changed so much since his time. S&V is no longer a viable strategy...meaning he'd have to grind it out from the baseline...at his age, good luck!

Ummm he didn't serve volley in 99 wimbledon final. He was just blasting backhand down the line and backhand crosscourt and freak forehands too! He was all baseline in 99 wimbfinal. Best backhand ever invented.

Pete must be 40 years old now.

No one can win GS tournaments today with that age. Sorry.

If he was 25 y.o., then sure, but 40 y.o. is TOO LATE to todays tennis.

Didn't you see what happened to Muster. He got destroyed by everyone except Leanardo Mayer.

I think Sampras would fare far better than Muster. He's just got so many weapons he'd have to be able to beat some people.

I agree, but he would never win a major. Sure maybe he could win a match or two against the qualies at Wimbledon, but even winning a 250 title would be pretty much be 0.01%. The game has changed so much after he quit that he just couldn't handle it.

But his baseline shots are more powerful than players today. And he moves great too. Probably the most athletic player of 2000 era.

Sorry but NO.

No one can win a GS today with 40 y.o.

He could play great (if he put the hard work to be fit) one or two matches, but not seven straight best of five sets matches.

In a single match, or single set, on a given day, he still could beat many players (being totally fit, I mean, and that is a big if), but several matches back to back, no chance.

Yep probably :)

You're talking about a player when he was in his prime, not to mention how the game has changed. He would have no chance of winning a slam, not even a 500 tournament. I still think for one off matches he could compete with top players but not top 10 players

If you were trying to conceal your favourite player, you didn't do too well. The cat is out of the bag now. ;)

Ontopic - Umm a 40 YO Pete winning a slam in an era of slow surfaces. Let me just consider that for a second......Geee doesn't look too good for him I'm afraid. :(

jeez, you need to get your eyes/memory tested. Sampras serve and volleyed on almost every serve in Wimbledon 99 final ......

I don't know if Pete's body could keep up with the grinding tour anymore. I know he had some foot issues a while back that kept him from playing too much, and with his style of S&V you need to have great knee's and feet for that.

Come on Pete, errr I mean Pollyballgirl, you really need to find better things to do with your time rather than hang around this place looking for adoration.

That was 1 match out of 4, five years ago. If he was in match shape, no injuries, I think Pete would be a dangerous opponent for anyone today for one match. But, win a 7 round, two week, major? I don't see any way.

We'll see :)

I think Sampras was a great player but he's too old now to play well over the course of a major. I can see him playing an occasional great match but as the body gets older it takes more time to recover from the previous match, especially in a best of five tournament. People forget that Pete was without a major for a while until he won the 2002 US Open. Heck he didn't win one tournament for a while.

Edit--Didn't see the earlier part of the thread and some of this has been said already.

No matter how great he was 13 years ago, he cannot cheat Father TIME. His body might not get "injured", but he cannot recover from his practice sessions in time for his next practice session for him to retain any semblance of his old self.
Try getting old.
Don't you think MichaelJordan wanted to keep playing BBall? What about Kareem, or Dr.J?
And he will get injured, just like any old fart who practices more than his weary body allows.
