If You Had to Pick A Player To Play For Your Life

Who is this in response to? Hopefully somebody, because if Nadal is under your skin that much, you need a therapist.

It was just a funny joke. I didn't respond to anyone in particular.

You are right about me needing a therapist. I have issues. But it doesn't have anything to do with Nadal or tennis :).

If you're still here in 2021, we'll see how relaxed you are  I love this place, but the crying and trolling and butthurt is beyond old.

Relax, I'm just having fun here, I don't take things seriously. Hey if you tell me Fed is Rafa's pigeon and the h2h is an embarrassment, I just laugh.

To bad it's rare that most fans here don't want to make fun out of their own heroes.

In this bizarre scenario the player you pick is at their 'Peak' fully physically and mentally focused.

Historically I'd say Laver, in terms of someone who would literally die out on the court for you I'd be tempted between Nadal or Hewitt.

This isn't so much your favorite player, even if most people will probably pick them anyway ;)

It would depend entirely on the surface and the event.

If it was clay/French Open then you'd have to pick Rafa.

Hard Courts: Djokovic

Grass: Federer

I wouldn't pick any of them. Because it's stupid. Playing for glory is one thing-players are MOTIVATED by it. Playing for someone's life is a burden. Because if you screw up, there are no second chances. And sportspeople imo, will never have the mental fibre required for it. The weight of someone's life is a greater burden than most people imagine.

Hey good idea. We should make tennis players play for their lives. Or better, lives of their fans. We need to bring that Roman gladiatorship back.

Wouldn't that make tennis much more interesting again?

Talking about greatness. Fed and Rafa when they lose, it's nothing. But those gladiators died when they lost. Talking about mental tougness and pressure.

Yes, interesting and more barbaric-yes, given the game being played with the Palestinians right now, that seems rather fitting. Anyway, wrong thread to voice my grievances on the issue. So I'll stop with this.

True, with Rafa it's a gamble. Who knows which Rafa shows up? Is it RG 08 Rafa or is it mediocre Rafa who loses to Jouzny, Ferrer, Soderling, Delpo, Wawrinka, Darcis, Rosol, Kyrgyos, Gonzalez.

At least you know that Fed and Nole play every match consistently with their best level.

Ok, I probably exaggerated with the list :).

My point is that it's less likely that Rafa will bring his best tennis. It's more of a gamble.

But, ok if I knew 100% that Rafa is going to bring his best level, then it's a different story.

It also depends. Do they play only one match or one tournament or entire season? And it depends on the surface too.

Yes, it seems that this particular tricky situation, would just end up counter reacting itself, thus resulting in two retirements, and furthermore, your own life...

True. Maybe the safest bet would be Chuck Norris.

I heard Fed tried to avoid being bageled by Chuck once and it didn't end well. Made Chuck even more motivated to bagel him.

I heard Rafa took a few games off Chuck once on clay. That's why Rafa is considered the clay goat.

Yes, I have heard the rumours, but was still quite dubious...now that I have heard another has also heard about this mystery, I am getting more and more confident with the idea. Nevermind his 9 MM clay GS titles... Rolad Garros, was it? Anyways.... Rafa is quite the Clay Courter to have managed this, some thought impossible, feat...

Let's try this variation. Suppose you did NOT know the surface on which the match would be played. It will be a best of five match on fast grass, slow grass, carpet, hard court outdoors (fast or slow), hard court indoors (again fast or slow), red clay or green clay. Whom would you select?

Federer, and cry if I saw clay on the ground, under his feet...unless it was blue clay, of course....

Agassi. He has the most diverse resume of them all imho. I personally rank his career slam as the best of them of all, plus he has olympics and WTF. If he plays at his absolute best, then I think he can most likely do it on any surface.

Then Fed, no doubt. Nobody is that good across all surfaces.

9 W finals, 5 RG finals, 6 USO finals, 5 AO finals, 7 WTF finals.

He can play anywhere.

Right now it would have to be Novak Djokovic. The other guys are too old right now (Rod Laver, etc) and Djokovic is currently the best player in the world.

Oh, and tennis gets better every month so even at peak form, Djokovic.
