Installed weight of strings

Hi!

Just restrung my Pure Strikes with different strings, one with Cyclone 17 and one with Origin 17. And the difference in weight (total per racquet) is 10g. They are matched in weight so I was a bit surprised about the difference in feel between the two. Is this normal? That installed weight between different strings differ that much?

Also, is there somewhere I can find info on string weight? The cyclone feels a bit too sluggish and the Origin a bit too light. Would be great to find something inbetween the two, but still with great playability.

I'm surprised too. Weight a new set of each and see if there is a 10 g difference.

There was a post long ago that tried to tackle the weight issue but its a nonstarter in that every racket is different and the string lengths vary and the density of the string bed varies too so good luck.

Agree, but 10 grams difference is a lot. Normally the difference in mass between synthetics and polyesters are ~5-6 grams and we're talking about a small frame here, not a granny stick i.e. 135 in^2.

Shroud - I thought you changed your strings to all Kevlar. Your sig doesn't reflect that or are you still in a trial phase?

Its still a trial I think but yeah I bet thats where i end up. I prefer the poly crosses because you get more spin, but tension drops too fast.

Today I played with 15g AG mains and 17g Ashaway crosses. It was playable but the 15g didnt bite like I am used to and spin was lacking a tad. 2 trials left. 18g/18g kevlar and stringing my 118" with poly mains, hitting and then putting the poly in as crosses- hopefully that kind of prestretching will work.

The weight is probably a bit off too because of the 15g. I need to weight and fine tune after stringing.

Call me crazy and marry the two. But the one you like the best in string bed feel in the mains and slap the other in the crosses...boom...in-between...

Thanks! Not a bad idea, maybe I'll try that. I asked here about origin in a hybrid but was advised against it.

Yeah, I figured that the weight will be different depending on head size etc. But weight for a 12 m set wouldn't be as difficult maybe?

The biggest discrepancy I've personally experienced was between a 1.10mm multifilament (added weight was 11-12g IIRC) and a 1.41mm poly (22g or 24g).

In general when the gauge is the same monofilament poly > multifilament.

More or less. Some manufacturers sell 12m sets, some 12.2m sets and there are even some who sell 13.5m sets. So you'd have to measure them before weighing.

^^^ What the crazy guy said!

10g is a lot for strings in roughly the same gauge....

Maybe something happened with your scale in-between weighing the two racquets. If you have a tare function, try that before weighing each racquet. 10g difference seems like way too much difference between two strings.

That's definitely a possibility, but I checked it and the numbers a correct for both racquets. The thing is I had two customised Pure Strike 100 strung up with origin a while back (before I sold them) and they felt really light with that string. I didn't weigh them but something didn't feel right coming from cyclone to those strings. So now with my pair of Pure Strike 16x19 I felt the same thing and weighed them.

Maybe it's just that origin is a very light string.

It could be a combination of Origin being light and the 16x20 using a lot less string than the 18x20, if I'm following what you're saying correctly.

I see what you mean, but all racquets I've experienced this with is 16x19...
Seems like 2 possibilities.

1. The strings are vastly different in weight and that would be easy to weigh

2. The rackets arent precisely matched and that would be easy to weigh when the strings are removed. Check the balance too

There is no way a same gauge string would be 10g heavier then another, unless you used one of those tungsten coated fly lines ;)

Hmmm...well, when they were both strung with Cyclone Tour 16 they weighed exactly the same. This occurred when I got them restrung with two different strings.

I'll restring them again soon, will weigh them without strings then just to be sure of their exact weight.

I appreciate all the suggestions I'm getting. Nice and helpful! :)

Maybe @Babolat Official can shed some light on the weight of origin?

I'd check on that dampener too, majority is heavier then 2g. About 6g difference would be believable, between lightest syn or multi and heaviest poly.

I bet the frames are the same but one never knows. Sometimes overgrips arent the exact same weight or some lead can come off or something silly like that. A buddy once had some extra weight and it turned out there was a different over grip he used on one racket and forgot about it

Be interested to see how this turns out

Yeah, it's always something in the details. But the only thing that's changed is the strings. Dampeners and overgrips are the same since I weighed them last time. But I'll check this as well and weigh them without dampeners and overgrips.

I believe something else is up. I have used both Origin 17 and Cyclone 17. At most I would guess 2 grams different. The widest range I have hit was recently going from 14 gram Cyclone 19 to 20.5 gram Ultra Cable. That weight difference was very noticeable to me, even after taking 2 grams of lead off the racquet at 12.

Small update to this interesting issue: I haven't been able to weigh them without strings and overgrips. But I did restring the one that had Cyclone in it. So now both have Origin 17. The weight difference is now only 6 gram.

So everyone that said that it's probably the racquet was right. And that little difference is something I can live with, it's easy to fix with tungsten tape. :)

Any tension difference or pre stretch?? You literally have more strings if the tension is lower, though probably not a 10g difference.

They are strung at 23 and 24 kgs, not that big difference. And the one thats strung at 24 kg is the one thats a bit heavier. :)

Is the best way to add a bit of static weight (so they match) to this inside the throat of the racquet?
