Interesting Davis cup featuring cool dude Safin

This weekend I have been watching the tie between the U.S and Spain and the way the players were acting seemed so ridiculously over the top, especially the U.S players. I know its Davis Cup, but Ive never seen players act like that before, it was stupid, I dont know if thats what all the U.S ties are like. If it is then it certainly puts me off them.

On the other hand, seeing Russia v France, obviously theres still the passion there, but nothing stupid like in the other tie. Especially Safin, how classy is this guy! Yet again he pulls off a win in a live 5th rubber and he just acts so cool, as if to say 'yeh, I'm the maaan, you know it'. And he just swaggers up to the net, shakes Mathieus hand and then walks over to his captain and gives him a hug. All that and he's just won the deciding rubber and put his country into the Semis of a tournament he loves!

The U.S team seemed so classless compared to the Russians, especially cool dude Safin. After each win the players went mad and after the Bryans won their doubles to clinch the tie they went absolutely crazy. I can kind of understand that, but when you see Safin's reaction to winning the LIVE 5TH RUBBER, I just have so much more respect for him than the U.S team.

Looking ahead, it seems as if Russia will probably meet the U.S in the final which will be played in the U.S if it ends up that way. It will be a very tough match, I think much harder than last years final for Russia, but I really hope they can go over there and shut those maniacs up. Pundits on TV in the UK seemed to think Russia were now favourites to win the title, if only slightly, but I definitely dont think they are, especially with a U.S v Russia match scheduled for U.S soil. Heres hoping though that Cool Dude Safin and his Russian army can lift the trophy for the second year.

What's wrong with celebrating that your country has made it to the semis? If anything, Safin's attitude is disrespectful to his country and to DC--not the other way around.

Well, both reactions are perfectly acceptable. Safin's seems to be something you can relate to more. Let people express themselves because uniformity is dull.

Players are different and teams are different.. they celebrate in different way and in addition the match wasn't that difficult in the end and I haven't seen Safin overly celebrate anything when he wins routine match.

US Team seems to thrive on emotions more and they are generally like to show off and give public "show". You see fireworks, music during US home ties and nothing like that in Russia.. the team is business like but nevertheless they are all bonded just as strong or even stronger then US team. They all look genuine in their interactions.

whoever said that it is disrespectful to Russian team not too celebrate perhaps did not see the match.. he played some of his best tennis, especially given his blisters on feet and lack of practice for that reason.

i think both ways are acceptable. The US team wants to make the final this year and win it all, which none of those guys have ever done, so they are excited making the semis. The Russian team won it last year, so they are just going about business as usual. Whatever way they decide to celebrate is fine.

Sidenote: If it is US vs Russia in the final, US should choose grass... Safin hates it, and Davydenko isnt that good on it either, same with Tursonov, dont know about Youzhny though. If they do choose grass, I see US winning.

With Safin you never know what is going on in that cranium of his, have you ever seen him play prior to this deciding rubber in Davis Cup? That same “Cool Dude” Safin, could have been and I use the word could VERY loosely one of the best, but his “cool” attitude prevented him.

But to say the U.S team seemed classless in comparison to the Russians???? Did you see the Friday matches or even the Final tie last year???

You overlook a lot of history. US has been getting beat in DC now for a long time, frustration has mounted. Spain went crazy went they beat the US in DC final a few years ago. This was a revenge tie, excitement was to be expected.

The tables have turned. We're now the favorites to win the whole thing.

All that said, I've always thought Roddick acted goofy on the court, davis cup or otherwise.

American patriotism is the ugliest of all, because it's a proud face on an ugly body -- meaning of our horrendous foreign policies and embarrassingly idiotic leadership. There's probably FCC regulatations put in place by the current presidentail administration saying that all broadcasts of team sports events representing [quote-unquote] 'Merica have to ratchet up the gaudy nationalism to the point of nausea.
