Is Federer crazy for coming back?

Yes but then he flopped vs Tsitsipas in the semis and couldn't even contend for the title.

People only remember the winner of events, not who beat when during the tournament.

Fed needs to reach a slam final before retirement, otherwise 40-15 will stand for eternity.
Big correction. Needs to win a slam final.
Not just reach there

on my second thought. it would be crazy not to make a come back with this well timed 2 year window, sorta protected ranking, if i were federer.

Let's be realistic.

If Fed 2019-20 had been either of the most recent GS finals, he'd have taken at least one of them.

Why should he retire? He came within a point of defeating Nadal and Djokovic in succession to win Wimbledon. Why stop now when that's still within reach?

He can absolutely win more.
Which final would he take?
AO 20 against Novak?
RG 20 against Nadal?
AO 21 against Novak?
Only possibility I see somehow real is USO 20, but wouldn't that be vulturing masterpiece?

If Novak doesn't hurt his elbow as he did in 2017/18, no more slams for Fed...

If he manages to win Wimbledon, it will be seen as the biggest sports comeback of all time! Eclipsing Ali's KO of Foreman, Tiger's final Masters triumph, and Brady's winning SB with Bucs!

And he will be 2nd favorite at Wimbledon. If he doesn't even try, he probably will regret for the next 30 years!

This could be his last chance to retire before being passed, and he can say with sincerity that it was COVID/family/injuries that led him to retire. By coming back, is he risking his legacy in one last delusional gambit to salvage his slam record?

Or, does he simply love tennis and is not a record-chaser like some other players? He plays for love of the game and does not care about the slam record? He is at peace with himself and wants to play only to compete? If so, is he the true GOAT no matter what? A man willing to play till the end, even if it means watching his records surpassed? Is this true greatness?

Let's hold off making a judgement until the end of this year.

I've said every time it's 3 factors, only one being Slam contention. He's got branding and longevity records which are both very attainable.

He will show it during the rest of the year. It does not matter he did not play, we are not talking about ranking. He is better than them gamewise.
Hope you're right. (y)

Tennis seems to need Fed back since Thiem and the Next Gen haven't filled the void left by him at all.

Jesus, people... just relax and enjoy his beautiful tennis while you still can.
They'll never relax, it's astronomical levels of envy/jealous/rage that Roger is universally beloved and their guy is passively (or actively) loathed. Why they care so desperately is a true conundrum, they should be like Lendl fans, we all rejoiced everyone hated him.
