I was wondering if it is ok to jump when hitting a forehand..because when i jump it seems like i can get more power and i still have forward motion on my swing. is this ok?

Hey there, Welcome to the board. if you go to the top menu there is a search feature, there are plenty of threads about all sorts of forehands. you'll definitely find tips on your jumping forehand.

Yes. The socalled jump is the natural propelling action of the stroke. "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction" which means if you push against the ground the ground pushes back. In an athletic stance if you bend your knees and then as you execute your stroke you raise your knees (and push against the ground), the socalled jump will occur. Let this occur naturally; do not try to make it happen!

Obviously, when you use all the available forces i.e. from the ground, legs, abs, trunks, arm, wrist-hand, and the racket, the result will be a powerful shot.

Its not so much of a jump more of you end up getting lifted because of the forces you are exerting as Mahboob explained from the twisting of your body and foot work i.e. weight transfer in the shot. When I do it I don’t realize because im concentrating on the shot till friends showed me photos also it seems to be mainly when going for winners.

Jumping is not only for more power, it's great too if you play on clay courts and the ball kicks up on your FH side.

avoid jumping with balls that are ankle to knee height unless you really know what your doing. I trained with some of my friends that were on the girls high school team (1st and 2nd singles) and that was one of the problems they couldnt execute properly.

The problem with jumping

When both feet are off the ground you lose mobility. The pro's do it, but then again they are pro's. They certainly did not learn and hone their skills this way, but only added this technique when they reached a certain level of play. For the typ 3.0 - 4.0 player, I would say hone your skills first. I'm a natural jumper, due to my athleticism , but I conscientiously do not jump to better my base skills.

white men CAN jump after all. I think since Federer is getting tired of trashing everyone he should consider trying out for the NY Knicks.

You call that a jump ?????
I think NBA players get more air time when they are walking.

I always thought that it wasn't a jump, but simply that if you use enough of your body, it'll naturally go up... so what's all this talk about adding a jump? isn't it just increasing your power by almost going for broke? it would be inconsistent for us cause we can't time stuff as well as the pros, i think...
