Justine Henin in 2010

Here's a link to a recent article on Justine Henin where she admitted that the reason she lost to Marion Bartolli in the semis at Wimbledon 2007 was her fear of facing Venus Williams in the finals.

‘The next summer, I lost my semi-final with Marion Bartoli because I was scared of having to play Venus in the final. It was stupid, not at all like me, but it was how it was.’

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/te...Henin-Im-scared-ending-lonely-lost-again.html

And here's the complete text:

When Justine Henin boards a flight from Belgium to Australia today, she is returning to a world that defined her existence, then almost destroyed her.

She admits to being both excited and afraid of what awaits: not just on her voyage through Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne during an Australian summer, but on the long, challenging trek across the globe leading to Wimbledon in June, a scene of unfinished business for the waif-like Belgian.
‘I know this is what I want to do and I’m excited about my comeback in Australia, but I’m a little scared, too,’ said Henin.

Almost 20 months have passed since Henin, without warning, walked out on tennis after winning seven Grand Slam titles and 41 tournaments. At 25, she seemingly had the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour at her mercy. She was undisputed world No 1, and the reigning French Open and US Open champion.

Yet her supremacy of the game proved to be an illusion, for at heart she was a confused, exhausted and deeply troubled woman. ‘When I think back, whenever I looked in the mirror, the woman I saw was lost,’ said Henin. ‘I was feeling so empty.’

Her story is complex, and altogether more dark than that of another Belgian champion, Kim Clijsters who, four months ago, returned from premature retirement as a wife and mother to savour instant success by winning the US Open to worldwide acclaim.

Clijsters had left tennis as she craved motherhood; Henin had departed as she yearned peace of mind, and felt that only by quitting the game could she discover if tennis was the cause of her melancholy . . . or merely a symptom of it.

As she slipped into what she insisted, at the time, was permanent retirement, a handful of past champions called Henin to check on her welfare. ‘I heard from Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, and Billie Jean King,’ she said.

But was there any word from those she had fought her hardest battles against, like Venus and Serena Williams, perhaps her greatest rivals? ‘No, there was nothing from them,’ she said without disappointment. ‘We never had that much contact, but it’s OK.’

Compassion is not an emotion in much evidence on the women’s Tour, as Henin would acknowledge from her own narrow field of vision until the day, May 14, 2008, she summoned the courage to end her torment.
‘After I stopped, I couldn’t watch tennis for a year,’ she said. ‘I wasn’t interested any more. I was just exhausted mentally and physically. I wanted to discover if I could exist without being a tennis player. Life has been difficult for me.’

She is not being melodramatic. Her mother Francoise died from cancer when Henin was 12, then, through a myriad circumstances, she became estranged for years from her father Jose, her brothers David and Thomas and her younger sister Sarah. Henin found no lasting contentment in marriage, either; she divorced her husband Pierre-Yves Hardenne in 2007 just five years after their wedding.

Yet by spring that year she had become reconciled with her family after her brother David had almost died in a car crash. When she won the French Open that summer, for a third year in succession, her triumph was witnessed for the first time by her entire family watching at courtside.
Paradoxically, her happiness at being reunited with them could not save her from becoming more and more morose with her profession.

As a small woman, just 5ft 6in tall, and with a single-handed backhand of precision and beauty, she had finally tired of punching above her weight, on and off the court.

Henin admitted: ‘I thought tennis was the reason I found it difficult to find a good balance in life. When I came out of this bubble, where I was protected, I faced real life. I had to breath without tennis.
‘A lot of things had happened since I was young, and I needed this time to think about what happened in my whole life and to realise who I am away from tennis. Perhaps I just became an adult.’

Perversely, Henin looked in strangely diverse areas in search of answers: she appeared in a reality TV show and a French soap opera, something that would have been anathema to her as an athlete who shunned celebrity.

And, more pertinently, she travelled to the Congo and Cambodia earlier this year as an ambassador for UNICEF.

‘I felt I came from a different world,’ she said. ‘In the Congo, I saw how hard it was for so many people who had to flee their homes because of the conflict there. They were hungry and had no water. These were people who had nothing in life. It took weeks to recover from what I saw but, in another way, I learned so much. I realised it is so precious to be healthy, and to have people who love you.

‘We have so much, and there are all these people with nothing; sometimes,
life is too complicated. I know I’m going back into the tennis life, where we’re spoiled with limousines and hotel suites, but I know now there are other more important matters. You have to build on the human adventures, not the trophies, not the titles, not the money.’

She can afford such philanthropy, as she has won more than £12.2million through her success on a tennis court. But, perhaps, it is because she has such staggering wealth that she deserves to be believed.
‘Money doesn’t compensate for sacrifices, or for the difficulties you experience if life itself becomes so hard as it had become for me,’ said Henin.
‘When I think of my career, I don’t think of all the money I have won. I just think of the emotion of the moment. As tennis players, we are not better, or worse, than others; we are just different. To lead this life, you are dealing always with constant pressure, constant expectation.’

In Australia, Henin will see Clijsters and her daughter, Jada, for the first time. ‘I dream of having kids myself, just not yet,’ said Henin. ‘I am a godmother five times. But at the moment I’m not seeing anyone, but if this comes to me, I’m open to the possibilities.

‘We put rules in our lives, but, finally, I have no rules. I don’t have to do anything by a certain age. But for me, I accept it is still important to have an adrenalin rush. I’m not ready yet to be at home.’

After playing warm-up tournaments in Brisbane and Sydney, Henin, like Clijsters in New York, will become a focus point at the Australian Open, which begins in three weeks’ time.

‘I’m not making the Australian circuit a big issue, I’m just feeling my way back,’ she said.

It is both the truth and a falsehood; as Henin has worked in solitude for months to reclaim her ranking, and to try to win Wimbledon, the one major to have eluded her. ‘I can’t think about being No 1 right now,’ she said. ‘I’ll need a few months to realise the level I want. ‘But if you are asking: “Is it important to me to be No 1 again?” then it probably is. Yet winning Wimbledon is what I dream about.

‘In 2006, I was just one set away from the championship against Amelie Mauresmo, but I didn’t trust myself enough on grass. I didn’t believe I could do it. Yet it was my opportunity and, after Amelie beat me, it was hard to deal with it.

‘The next summer, I lost my semi-final with Marion Bartoli because I was scared of having to play Venus in the final. It was stupid, not at all like me, but it was how it was.’ Any apprehension Henin is feeling, as she boards her flight to the other side of the world today, is heavily outweighed by the appearance of the different, more open, woman she sees whenever she looks in the mirror now.

‘Everything in life is so precious, but, sometimes, it is too late when we realise it,’ said Henin. ‘I can accept myself just the way I am now, with my qualities and my weaknesses.’

For awhile I was thinking it was a nice interview but then near the end a big UGH at Henin coming up with a lame excuse to dismiss her embarassing loss to Barotli. If she had lost to Serena in the quarters of the U.S Open that year would she have blamed it on being scared to play Venus in the next round too. A great player of course, but still as much a sourpuss and sore assed loser as always.

I would be really happy if she and Kim Clijsters could stay at home for the Australian Open to give a chance to somebody new, some new face to raise the trophy...for example Yanina Wickmayer or Caroline Wozniacki...I think this will add credibility to the sport...
I love both,Justine and Kim,but what bothers me much is the fact that a RETIRED player is taking the place of a competing one ,no justice in this...

LOL the only thing Henin and Clijsters being there will do is keep the title from being a mortal lock for Serena Williams. Thank goodness there are 2 players back who can actually challenge Serena apart from her sister on grass, rather than having jokes like Safina and Jankovic filling that role. If you think Wickmayer or Wozniacki were going to win the title even without Henin and Clijsters not there then you were dreaming. The fact the womens game has resorted to such a low that anyone even has to talk about Safina, Jankovic, Wickmayer, or Wozniacki is exactly why thank goodness the 2 Belgians are back.

I was also thinking of leaving also the Williamses at home but I thought it would be too much (even if the tournament could add briilliancy to the tennis played with all these people simply staying at home)...
I found that Wickmayer and Wozniacki were the best players in the last half of 2009 so I gave their names as examples...
I find that ''THE BELGIANS'' as you call them are not a godsent to the upgrading needs of the WTA tennis...they will not upgrade anything they will just fit it to the mold of their shoes...no female Del Potro or Davydenko will appear...just the ''old'' formulas of Kim and Justine...clocks will inevitably be set in reverse and we will have the pleasure to watch again the past scenarios of past tournaments with the same script...pure nostalgia...the WTA doesnt need it...

and what would the WTA tour be showcasing without the 2 Belgians? Serena's complete dominance, only challenged by Venus at Wimbledon. Do not delude yourself to thinking the likes of Wickmayer or Wozniacki were going to impede on the Williams territory. Granted the French Open would represent the one opening for these others, but atleast that event will have some sense of order now rather than being so weak we get the pig slop we got at this past years French Open. Serena and Venus, the women who would completely monopolize the tour next year without the Belgians back to challenge them are even older than Kim and Justine, and have been at the top of the game since 1999. So if you dislike nostalgia, clocks being set in reverse, "old" formulas, whatever, then you should be happy about the Belgians return as reality is you would be seeing alot more of that without the Belgians than with them.

Yanina and Caroline were the artists of the only upgrading phenomenon in the WTA tennis since Justine retired...they were and are undoubtedly preparing themselves to crush the Williams tanks...so I find that they should be prepared now to crush them in the first rounds in Australia if they come across...I am not afraid anymore about the ''Black Power'' grabbing the tournament...so I find that Belgium has nothing to do in this matter...Kim should be a good mother and go to take care of her daughter and perhaps Justine also should search to adopt a kid...and leave tennis in their display cases at home...leave the sport to competing players...

You might be the biggest idiot moron on these boards. And that's saying something with the likes of Feda$$ and drakuLIE trolling around. Seriously, everytime you post, it's pure nonsense garbage that no one understands.

@ the OP - It's pretty obvious she choked in that Wimby SF. I'm just waiting for her to admit that she retired because she knew she was starting to lose her dominance on the game and was afraid of being embarrassed even more on larger stages by better players, even dare I say losing at 'her' slam, the French. Things were not looking pretty for Justine in 08, and that was probably as big of reason for her 'retirement' as any other thing. Rather than fight through it and try and regain her form, she decided to quit. Nothing wrong with that, as long as you admit to it, which Justine has failed to do so just yet. She didn't want another Marion Bartoli - level player beating her, this time at the French possibly, and knew the embarassment that would come along with that and decided to retire instead of facing the possibility of that happening.

Wow! I see so much of myself in Justine-personality wise. I think that's why I like her. Although I'd love to know her actual height. Reports have her from 5'4" to 5'6".

I dont know how you say "better players". Whom exactly are you referring to. Justine was still undisputably the best player in the World at the time she retired, even with her rough start to 2008. The holder of 2 slam titles and the WTA Championships, #1 ranked by a mile, many more tournament wins in the last year than anyone else and winning head to heads with all the top players in the last year plus. Even if you believe she were going to lose that status there would not have been many better players. You could argue if Justine continued to struggle that Serena would have reached that point, and Venus on grass, and that is it. Safina, Dementieva, Jankovic, and the rest of the clown charade that make up the WTA tour would have never reached the point of being considered "better" players than even a struggling Justine, and Sharapova's shoulder went bust all over again around when Justine retired.

She says it's stupid, and it's soooooo stupid that it doesn't make any sense at all ...... losing to Bartoli is somehow better than losing to Williams?!?!

a loss is a loss is a loss ....... plus losing earlier means you make less money

Players like the Williams and Henin dont care much about a bit more prize money at one event. They already have more money than they know what to do with the rest of their lives I bet. That being said I agree Justine's claim in the OP's interview was stupid and somewhat dissapointing.

I think I meant to say worse players. She was afraid of losing at slams to players even worse than Bartoli, and rather than even face that possibility, decided to retire.

I think she also didn't want to face the possibility of getting embarassed by someone like Serena or Venus at Wimbledon or USO even. She knew her level was slipping, and rather than facing the prospect of losing her hold on the #1 spot, she decided to quit. Lest we forget the spankings she recieved from Sharapova and Serena in 08, and the embarassing losses she had to the likes of Schiavone on HC and Safina on clay before she stepped away. I think she saw that it was only going to be harder and harder for her to stay at the top, and rather than fight through it, she decided to pack it in.

OK in that case I agree. The good news for her would have been (and still is now) that Sharapova has never played anywhere near her 08 Australian Open level since then, and a player like Safina can never play the kind of tennis in slams she does everywhere else (and the way she ended last year she might be finished at the top level of the game altogether really). Of course she wouldnt have known that at the time though. It is puzzling to exactly why she played so poorly for her standards in early 2008. It was the worst tennis she had played since 2000 probably. Hopefully whatever the reason was she has rectified it and will atleast be playing better than early 2008, even if not up to her 2007 level.

Second,I dont care about the kids tale of Henin's retirement in which the bad guy was a bad girl called Marion Bartoli...poor angel!!!...what a fame!!!!...What I keep saying is that the comeback of THE BELGIANS does not help to forge the future of the WTA...they belong to the near past of the sport...and they dont help to upgrade it (as it has been happening in the ATP side which has no comebacks)...In the benefit of the WTA I think that they should stay at home and perhaps they should only play nostalgia exhibition matches and the proceedings should go to charity organizations...that is the best they could do...

If you want the "fresh faces" (Wickmayer, Wozniacki, et al) to reach the level of slam winner, then it is their job to earn that level by defeating the older players you resent...not have the superior players vanish so your heroes can stumble around, having the top position of the sport handed to them.

I'm a fan of Justine's and I welcome her return to competetive tennis. She may be a sore loser and seem arrogant and aloof but that doesn't take away the fact that she's extremely talented. Women's tennis will only benefit from her return.

Even as much of a non Henin fan as I am, I'm not hateful enough to insist she stay retired to allow others to win. This marpiw is a joke. Half his/her posts are incoherent ramblings which make zero sense and have no grounding in reality. Evert and Navratilova didn't just 'step away' to allow Graf and Seles to take over, those two stepped up. Though I am fan of Wozniacki and some of the younger players, if they are truly the future of the game, they will be able to step up and knock off the old guard - Venus, Henin, Clijsters, Henin, and even Serena. Nothing in sports is given, everything is earned. To say that Henin should stay retired for the good of the game is ridiculous. If anything she's adding much more interest and credibility to the struggling WTA tour, and even I as a non-Henin supporter realize that and welcome her return.

I will pull for Henin or whoever is playing Serena. I won't watch the match because I can't stand the sight of her. Hula hoop earrings, excessive jewelry and threats of death.

I do think jamesblakefan brings up a good point to how Henin was playing in early 2008. Is that the Henin we will see, or will it be the Henin of 2007, or will it be something in between the two? My guess is it will be something in between the two. That Henin would probably be good enough to win the French but would it be good enough to win anywhere else? Maybe but not neccessarily as the favorite at the other slams.

First I'm saying that these comebacks wont benefit the WTA because it will mean the return to the back script in the sport (seasons 2006, 2007 and part of 2008)adjusted to the mold of Henin and Clijsters shoes...no new formulas to thrill the fans just the old ones of the past...no new techniques to be displayed in the courts...no players playing better...just adjusting to the game of the comebacks whose level today is far from being superb (I bear in mind the level of Kim Clijsters in the US Open to make this assesment)...
This jamesblakefan is also a joke...All of his/her postings are the whining of the donkey who cant see to his sides because his eyes are covered by a pair of big blinders...The tree doesnt let him watch the forest...and this comebacks seem to be as godsent for him...but unfortunately and for the benefit of the WTA the show should be elsewhere...within the standings listing of the association(Wozniacki and Wickmayer are just the tip of the iceberg)...no matter how low is the player...the upgrading tsunami should start there...

Quoted for truth.

You're a....you know what, I'm not even gonna say what I want to say, because it'll probably get me banned. I'm through talking to you. You're not even on my level of intelligence. Total waste to take this any further. Good day.
This is the type of answer I was waiting from you...because you dont have enough education to tolerate anybody who doesnt think like you...You wont convince me that the comebacks are a godsent and I wont convince you that they are useless...
I am really afraid of your intelligence because it will surely lead you to some disasters in your life due to your lack of education and tolerance...beware!!!...
Ok,jamesblakefan,it has been a displeasure to discuss some matters with you...

I will pull for Henin or whoever is playing Serena. I won't watch the match because I can't stand the sight of her. Hula hoop earrings, excessive jewelry and threats of death.

Go Henin!

Can't agree with you more.
Speaking of death threats, why all those deleted posts in the other thread?:-?

Look at the total mess the WTA is at now. So much of instability and upsets, there are no consistent winners( Serena only thrives in majors in '09, Even unseeded players can win in premier events.). It is only good that Henin is back, bringing more variety to the game ( Around 95% of the WTA are ballbashers) and also set the bar. Clijsters and Henin would only improve the game by posing a challenge to the young guns and not the garbage in the WTA now. Also, i agree with thealivest in saying that there must more challengers to face Serena and prevent her from dominating the slams ( except FO). The current challengers, eg. Safina, Jankovic, Azarenka, are all clowns and falters in slams. Clijsters has already done it in USO '09, time for Henin to rebound.

I find that what you are describing is not a mess is something internal to the WTA that is moving and is bringing the fantastic news that as you say ''EVEN UNSEEDED PLAYERS CAN WIN THE PREMIER EVENTS''...this is fantastic news, this means that a general upgrade is beggining to shoot up between ALL players...All players are playing better due to their effort to mantain their level...So I find this upgrading phenomenon the best for the sport...
But we have now these two girls (Kim and Justine) who are coming back...I am afraid that they will stop the actual upgrading phenomenon and simply adjust their fellow players to their level and the thing will die there...in a mere adjustment...After it(the adjustment) we will have the pleasure of seeing them winning all and transforming themselves in the richest sportswomen that ever existed and the WTA will have ''the bread for today'' but also ''the hunger of tomorrow"...they should do the WTA a favor:they should stay at home!!!...

It just shows how weak the field is and someone needs to constantly be a favorite.

LOL, I'm starting to like this marpiw person. I think it's obvious that his first language isn't English so I think it's stupid to call him ******** for typing in an unusual format, although using the "..." between sentences and persistent use of the phrase "upgrading phenomenon" is quite annoying.

Anyway, it's pretty obvious that it's only good for the game that henin is returning because, apart from serena, venus and clijsters, the rest are a pile of ball-bashing, unimganative, technically lacking, overgrunting absolute moose ****.

You are right,English is not my mother language (my mother language is Spanish) and I use to ''import'' some features from Spanish like using the ''...'' format because it is very common in Spanish to create some suspense and mystery and I love to create both effects, sorry if it annoys English speaking readers like you...
The other annoyance is the phrase I invented (I do not want any copyright payment for it) is the ''upgrading phenomenon'' (I hope that its meaning is understandable). But after thinking a lot I arrived to the conclusion that two players (Yanina Wickmayer and Caroline Wozniacki) were suddenly playing better than their colleagues and I thought that it wasnt an isolated fact.As a matter of fact Yanina (normally a player who doesnt advance any further as the first rounds)could reach and win one of the big tournaments of the last months of the actual season and Caroline reached the final of the US Open to loose it to Kim Clijsters.
So I interpreted both facts as the upsurging of a (UPGRADING) phenomenon.
The same happened in the ATP side with players as Del Potro,Davydenko and Verdasco making sacred monsters as Nadal and Federer stumble.
Unfortunately the season got to an end and this phenomenon could not continue. We will see what happens when 2010 season begins,if this phenomenon continues.
In this scenario I think that the comebacks (Kim and Justine) will stop the phenomenon and make things adjust to the mold of their shoes using formulas and techniques they employed in back seasons.I think that the WTA tennis doesnt need these back editions of the Tennis Enyclopedia,it needs the new one (which was beggining to be written by Yanina and Caroline).
I dont want to read old books (Kim and Justine),I want to read a new one (Yanina and Caroline). With all the power of my soul I want the comebacks to stay at home.

I hope you understand me.
Best regards
