Kick serve and Florida vid

moved to florida. Before leaving i had a lesson with John Yandell. He really helped my serve and i still have to incorporate some of the things he taught. But its much better.

No one seems to just hit here and so I have had lots of practice during matches and have now gotten the serve to the point where i am holding serve most of the time and even dominating when my body isnt tight. One opponent mentioned how the ball never seemed to bounce the same way twice....

Anyhow its always a disappointment videoing kick serves. The video quality is never enough for Chas and serves seem to be slowed down 20mph to a crawl. And balls that jump off the court dont seem to do so on camera.

John helpd a ton on my flat serve and I am hitting much faster these days but this vid is just kick practice. Camera is about 5’6”

the one at :25 looked like a really good one.
more lean into court, and better timing of the leg, hip snap & swing, will produce an even bigger bounce
why the move the florida?
lol, will you still be wearing sweatshirts down there? :p after you lost all that weight you should be showing it off :p

Why did you move? Weather? Tennis? Retired? Switching to Pickleball?

What things specifically did he help you with regarding ur serve?
He added 5 more lbs of lead....

Planting my right foot right behind my left instead of to the right of the left foot and in front.

Toss.

And some other stuff I can’t seem to do but will try to add once I get the other two down

Yep its true. Been working on that but can only do what the back can do. Getting better.

Grew up in florida and have family here. Also got a job offer and its got a much lower cost of living. Its was a perfect storm.

Sadly as I was packing up and planning the move I indulged in all the bad foods I would be missing in Ca so lots of weight piled on. So even in the heat I am often in sweats. But at some point i can take off the hoodie.

Thanks. Yeah more fluid and more consistent. Still improving and have been throwing in more flat serves. Thats been a bit harder using the slight eastern bh grip I do but its been effective. Slice serve is MIA though

Learn the slice before the flat imo.

I pointed this out a year or so ago but at the time you said you weren't ready to implement the change. Didn't you also have a knee issue which made this difficult?

I can hit slice serves i just rarely do. Playing mostly dubs its mostly kicks. Slice on the deuce sometimes but the flat is better in that hitting mostly kicks the flat is more of a change of pace than a slice serve.

Agree that if you only had one serve the slice is better than the flat.

Probably. Knees have gotten better but the issue was and o e of the things John poi ted out was that my right leg was too far apart in the beginning stance and also i was 45 deg to the net post. He had me shorten my stance and stand parallel to the net. That makes it easier to do. Basically he helped me make the change.

Anyway much better kick from before, I feel likr before it was too loopy, it bounced a bit higher probably than your new kick but it was soft with a high bounce.

Your new kick seems to bounce a bit lower but now you can actually see how forward it kicks and that it has alot more energy and weight in it.

That running amok into the serve looks a bit extreme to me!

Oops! just noticed it was the other video you posted on side-arm serve thread.:)
Loved the backhand at 2.41 by the way.

Back on the new serve video. Yeah, nice and fluid. Bounces 5 times before hitting the back fence but that's not the point here!:p

Have you ever tried tweaking your rhythm so that you make contact a little earlier with regards your leg extension / jump? At the moment you're making contact as you're falling / after you've landed. I think this would be a more efficient rhythm and get you more rhs. I like the teaching cue of trying to get your racket to complete the follow through before you land.

Nope but I can try. Is that just serving quicker?

I was trying to say that you want to build up momentum to contact, including with your leg drive. If you're making contact as you land it means your leg drive isn't helping. The same thing applies even if you don't leave the ground when you serve - you want to hit when you're on your tip toes rather than later when your weight is coming back down on your heels. 'Hit on the way up'

Good to see your name on the board.

Since you went to a real teacher, and I do not use a kick serve. I guess its ok if I give you my feedback. (TWH rule 3a)

1 You want to stay sideways as long as possible.
2 If you throw the toss a little higher, and let It drop down some, as your coming up, will result in a little more friction, or more spin. This works on my spin serve.

Thanks man.

Yeah I have always been a low tosser and Yandell wanted it higher but it seemes to have slipped down. Will have to work on it

And what is up with everyone doing “1st in” on their serves? No warm up just 1st in. Drives me crazy.

Serve looks good my friend..I always thought you had a good serve and motion but somehow you weren't getting the maximum power from your racket...But anyways, glad to see you are happy and settling into your new home:)

Weird. No one did that in cali

I played with a German guy who was passing through here who said he played challenge courts in San Diego during the week he was there. He told me they always played "FBI both sides" ... LOL ... The first time he said 'fbi' I was like "whaaaaaaaat???"

That is basic stuff. Didn't you know the face the right net post at 45 degrees teaching before?
I wasnt clear. On the pin point my right foot was going in front of the left. Now it is behind the left foot touching the heel with the middle of the right foot

Yep 45 degrees was what i was doing. He changed my left foot to parallel to the baseline

Compared to San Fran cost of living, you are gonna be rich. Time for a custom racquet visit to Bosworth and a signature sweat suit.
Bosworth never returned my email before so doubt it willbe different this time. Yep cost of living is way lower...

FBI both sides is standard here when we rush to start playing without adequate warm-up.

It also accommodates new players in doubles who take the place of someone who has to leave. Rest have been playing already, new guy(s) jump in and get FBI both sides first time they serve.
