Knot help!

On two separate occasions I have had a Parnell finishing knot come un-tied with the same synthetic gut in different racquets. I feel like I'm pulling it tight enough, I'm even pulling the tag end as I'm opening the clamps. Should I use a different knot for synthetic gut?

No. I've seen rackets with one half hitch on each knot that needed re stringing so a Parnell should be more than adequate for any string unless there isn't enough room to make the second loop. In that case, people use the pro knot. Irvin has videos on both knots, maybe take a look and see if what you're doing matches up with him.

I use syn gut and tie the knot the way you describe and have never had a problem. I have no idea why it has happened to you.

Make sure you you cinch up the knot so that it is pulled towards the grommet/frame. Then cinch up the tail. Then remove the clamp. They should not become undone unless you trim the tail too short. Leave about 3-4 mm.

I can't imagine a Parnell knot coming untied even if it is not tight. Usually the first half hitch is no-brainer but the second my cause problems. When tying that second half hitch my sure the tag end come up through the first. In other words the string that came up through first should end up being the closest string to the grommet. Also the tag end that comes up second must go through both loops.

Thank you for the responses! I have watched Irvin's videos and others that are out there as well to double check my method and I am spot on... I guess I will leave the tag end a little longer when I cut the string.

Have you also reviewed Richard Parnell's YouTube videos as well?
Just to be absolutely sure that you're tying them correctly.
He has a couple different videos, from a couple different angles.

I've been using the Parnell knot for years and have never had one come untied. Consider posting a photo of one of your Parnell knots, both before and after the untie event, so we can see if it's a proper Parnell.

From what I see, it looks like a good Parnell knot. I'd be surprised if you have trouble with this one. Do you have a photo of the one that broke or came untied?

Without a closeup view, it's difficult to be certain; however, it appears that tie-off grommet 6B on the left side is split or torn and has sharp edges. I wouldn't be surprised if this cut through the body of the knot and caused breakage. The remaining knots all appear to have the proper Parnell shape, so you clearly know how to tie them properly. Inspect the grommet and let us know what you find.
