Kohlschreiber - An underachiever?

I don't follow him much apart from at GSs but I feel befuddled that why this guy has not achieved much more. He took a set from Rafa at USO 13. Had a pretty close match with Novak at RG 13 and defeating him at RG 09.

Not only does he come up with jaw-dropping shots, he has the game to win long rallies. His BH is such a brutal force. What is holding him back? I reckon he is not that mentally strong. What else?

Maybe he's too defensive.

Love Kohli. But his serve is solid yet not that threatening, he's fairly short compared to the top guys, slightly inconsistent...

He definitely has a lot of variety and his return of the hard first serve is nearly as good as Fed. But the guys ahead of him have more weapons, and he lacks the sheer toughness and fitness of say Ferrer to make up for that.

He didnt play AO this year. I am hoping he will be in top 20 next year.

His high rank was 16, but he has made only 1 QF in his career (Wimb 2012)

His best match was against Andy Roddick at the Australian open. He does like to out grind big servers but can't out grind a grinder.

He's solid, but unspectacular and prone to choking. I remember a match against Del Potro a few years back where Phil held a 6-1 lead in a tiebreaker and ended up losing the set.

He's also prone to losing his game for periods of a match. That match against Sijsling at Rotterdam this year a perfect case in point.

Kohlschreiber is my favorite player, and even I don't think of him as much of an underachiever. He just never beats the top guys, because his game, while beautiful, is simply a little bit less effective than theirs.

He also does, on occasion, stupid things like hitting drop shots he doesn't hit well against Isner.

Just enjoy watching the beautiful tennis he plays, and accept that he will rarely trouble anyone in the top 10. Perhaps he could have been a steady fixture in the top 20 instead of the top 30, but I don't think he could have done more.

Yeah the last sentence, even though I felt he improved a bit in this department, his match today showed it. Great stuff from Kohl, such a talented player.

I don't know how he could be called an underachiever. He's really only 5'9" (stood a few ft away from him at Rome a few yrs back - he could come and go in the crowd and hardly anyone knew who he was).

He's making the most of his talent.

Kohlschreiber also beat Roddick at the 2008 Australian Open, by the score of 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, 6-7, 8-6.

His defense isn't that good for a guy who is only 5'9, despite good footwork I feel he is lacking some foot speed. His serve is huge for his height though, and his forehand and backhand are both phenomenal. Definitely a guy who should have seen time in the top 10 IMO, I don't see his game as less effective than guys like Gasquet at all, let alone Tipsarevic and Monaco (LOL).

He is the same height as Ferrer (a little taller, to be honest) and about the same as Hewitt, Nalbandian and Davydenko. Robredo is only a bit taller. His height isn't what is holding him back.

How good do you think he could/should be if not for this 'held back'? Just because those guys made Top 10 doesn't mean every guy should. He doesn't have a killshot; long doesn't take the ball early like Nalbandian/Davydenko; doesn't have the speed or grit of Ferrer to run all day.

I think he definitely should have seen some time in the top 10, he has a phenomenal backhand and forehand combination, clearly better IMO than guys like Monaco and Tipsarevic. He serves better than them too.

i love me some kohlschreiber. when he's on, his game is lovely to watch. i don't consider him an underachiever. he's done well with what he's got. he's got some deficiencies, like all the guys ranked in his range, and some mental lapses sometimes. but he's very very good . . . just not great. no crime in that.
