Kyrgios is a disgrace to Tennis

No one "earns the right" to behave better or worse - that's completely ridiculous. Those who watched tennis prior to the 21st century know that Connors was angry long before he was successful. And McEnroe was McEnroe long before he was a champion. That didn't change when they won titles. So was Connors bad for the sport then became good for the sport? Nonsense. His personality made him good for the sport, just as Kyrgios' personality is good for the sport now. It's a kick in the balls to the fans who have only ever known this generation of players. When there's a new player on the block that can actually evoke emotions from fans whatever they may be, most will always go into anaphylactic shock as to how someone would dare disturb them from their day-dream. But Kyrgios isn't especially controversial or especially rude. He's nothing new at all. We just haven't seen him for a while.
Winning doesn't make it okay, but I am willing to overlook poor behaviour (to an extent) if the player has otherwise made good contributions to the sport.
Not accept. Overlook.
Tiger Woods would be a good example of what I'm talking about.

We'll have to agree to disagree on whether or not Kyrgios' personality, on its own, is good for the sport.
It does add interest, I'll give you that, but otherwise, not a fan.

Holy crap. It finally just hit me. Guy who always wanted to be successful at a sport that's not the one he's good at? Guy that blatantly ignores every aspect of his sport's etiquette? Guy that's hotheaded, emotional and draws money and fans because of it?

Forget Mac or Connors - Nick Kyrgios is Happy friggin Gilmore.

Nick Kyrgios is starting to looks like the 70s Ille Nastase of tennis!

I am a big fan of Ille Nastase and love his tennis antics!

I'm very pro "characters" in tennis, even if they are, as in a Nick's case, sometimes a**holes, spoiled, etc. He deserves most of the criticism he gets, but not everyone can be Fed and I wouldn't want everyone to be Fed. His type has always been present and I wouldn't have it any other way.

What's funny with this is that I played Basketball in College since the tennis team lost funding and in the grand scheme of things I achieved more as a Basketball player than I did in Tennis, although arguably. Even though I've played tennis since 10 and practiced a hell of a lot more.

I can understand where Kyrgios is coming from. He's just being 20.

"I have no problem with that," Gasquet said about Kyrgios' on-court behaviour.

"I think it's great for the game. He has a good personality. He's fun to watch on the court. He's nice off the court - that's the most important. He respects the players off the court. He's always talking in the locker room. I think he's a nice guy. On and off the court he's a good player for tennis."

Ridiculous post. Has nothing to do with his race. Just his behaviour.

again, its not his behavior its some people's reaction to it!

learn the distinction...

examples are littered throughout this thread and others about N.K., but continue to pretend to be blind.

When I was 20, I did as many things that I'm now proud of that things that ashamed me. He is behaving extremely poorly but he is young. Let's see when he will be older.

No, genuine.
Hope he gets better - but who knows - he acts like the "gangsta" he so clearly wants to be.

He's had a controversial Wimbledon but he also had a good run and by far the best run of the young players (he is only 20). I'd say his Wimbledon performance in terms of tennis was pretty solid.

I am not interested in his on-court performances - it's his behaviour I am interested in.

Ok I'll keep an open mind. Give me examples to back up what you are saying

I personally don't like a lot of Kyrgios' antics, but I do like his raw, unfiltered expression. He isn't a bad person, he's just young, unfiltered, and expressive.

People can say what they want about the guy, but he is at least genuine.
A genuine a-hole?

There's nothing inherently good about being "unfiltered". Sometimes "filters" are good. They can lead to things like self-control and civility. Reminds me of that saying attributed to Lincoln: Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

Leave it to Bartelby...
So we've gone from hating Philipoussis, to hating Tomic and then to hating Kyrgios. Such progress for multicultural Australia!
Don't worry Bart, I'm sure there are plenty of Lilly-whites hated in Australia too.

That is true.
I've said before though that if he starts contributing more (winning), and maybe matures a little too, which will probably happen, then I will be able to tolerate him more.
It's all about overall contribution.
Pretty much this.

Federer's take on it is remarkably patient and fatherly, dare I say.

Tennis can get boring and frustrating for the young, whereas hardened pros ...

"FEDERER: A game is like 55 seconds. Again, did he really do it or not? A game where a guy serves well, is that tanking, too? It's like sometimes it's like a boxer when he puts his hands down, is that tanking? Then he swings freely again. I think we shouldn't dig too deep into those kinds of things. If you told me he did an entire set, plus more, plus this, I'd say, 'OK, it's a bit much probably.' "

Not a fan of this guy. It's disappointing to see him behave the way he does on court. I just have a hard time witnessing anyone, pro athlete or not, acting in such a vulgar, arrogant and disrespectful manner. Wimbledon is broadcast during the daytime before the watershed in the UK and watched by millions of people. Commentators will frequently apologise if the mics catch players swearing. How often does he expect them to apologise on his behalf? There's not a gram of social grace in him or if there is, he's hiding it very well. Hopefully it will diminish with age. If not, I can only hope others don't sink to the low standards he sets for himself. It's a shame as he's a great player with the potential to go on to do great things but with his on court demeanor and bad attitude during press conferences, I just can't bring myself to root for him.

I feel the same way about Djokovic. Even though he won the matches against Anderson and Gasquet, demoralizing a young girl in the process almost negates any victory he has gained.

Kyrgios is just young and dumb.

Novak needs to behave better too.
You would never catch Federer yelling at ball girls.

If Kyrigos was winning, you haters would be lapping up his act. Wouldn't be able to get enough of the "bad boy". The shame is on you.
You played the "what if" game, used the word "hater" to describe Kyrgios' critics and are scolding a non-existent audience. I think the shame is on you.
