I think it will get better.

I mean the Americans now aren't as good as Roddick or Sampras. Nowhere near it. But they are still decent enough.

Querrey made a QF and a SF at Wimbledon and a QF at the US Open too IIRC... that isn't too bad for an American player of today.

Then there's Isner who has a SF and a QF at the majors...

Sampras talked about this in an interview I watched recently. And he said that it's just natural, what can you expect. There's more players and the Big 4 are dominating the sport. The interview was from 2011 but it's still relevant because there hasn't been too much progression since then for American tennis.

I just don't see excitement for tennis in most of today's youth in the U.S.

I have 3 very athletic nephews and none of them are the least bit interested in tennis. They want to play basketball, football, or soccer.

When I was a kid we at least knew of Connors, McEnroe, Agassi, Sampras, etc and were inspired to go bang some balls around the tennis court...

Because none are winning majors or making the news headlines... that's what kids pay attention to and always have.

When I was a kid I knew of Agassi because he was having that big resurgence at the time. But I'm not American. :-D I also knew of Sampras and that he held all the records after overtaking Emerson..

Rafter & Hewitt were big here when I was a kid because they were winning majors and getting to No. 1... we don't have that kind of promise anymore either. Kyrgios, Tomic and even De Minaur don't hold a candle to those two.

Sorry, I'm used to sticking up for Sampras with all the Fedalovic fans claiming he could have never won Wimbledon if Fedalovic had been born in 1970... :)
The sad thing is many people actually believe what I posted in jest. Sampras is pretty underrated by most people. Ridiculously good on faster surfaces especially

Very interesting idea.

I would like to make a proposal of my own. I believe that we must pioneer a "groundstroke allowance". This rule will dictate how many groundstrokes are allowed to be played in a point. If the allowance is exceeded, the point is decided by a coin toss. The "allowance" for each point will be determined on a rotation between the umpire's choice, crowd choice and home audience choice, the latter two of which will be voted for on a mobile application. Volleys count as half of a groundstroke in the point; the serve is not counted.

Why not move the service line closer towards the net....

Since this is already a ridiculous thread, I may as well join in, can't make it any worse. :)
Have a moveable line for the back of the service box (done electronically of course).
The distance the line is from the net is calculated according to the height of the server.

For tall servers the line will be much closer to the net.
For short servers the line will be approximately where it is now.
This way there will be no serving advantage whatsoever for taller players!

A level playing field!
Say goodbye to too many aces per game. :)

hilarious stuff. Maybe, just maybe we should get rid of tennis racquets, evil judge umpires ... annoying tennis fans who can't turn off their freaking cameras or their latest iPhone # 33XLLLLxs on the court ...

Funny thread though :)

To be honest they should just eliminate the serve altogether. Get each player to start with a forehand or a backhand instead (have the umpire throw them the ball) so we go straight into the rally. That way these serve-bots get exposed and the actual talented athletes get their due. It would also remove the opportunity for bore-fest tactics such as serve and volley and the so called 'net' game (lol).

I really don’t see why anyone would want to tamper with this game. It’s a competition, not an “everyone gets a participation award”. These athletes are competitors, gladiators of the tennis court. Why are they’re so many threads about changing a game that has stood test of time. With that being said, I strive to get as many aces as I can per match. Hell, my favorite player served 492 aces this year. So should she and others be penalized because they excel at this part of their game? “Come on man”

All players must wear tailored suits.

With new balls, the players will also be examined for sweat. Anyone found sweating will be disqualified for grigorious breach of conduct.
