only nadal can stop at 07 IW FINAL

and he reached us open final at 2007

He became exceptionally good on hardcourts in best of 3 matches. It just took him a little longer to translate that to best of 5.

He definitely got my attention that summer, that's for sure, and when I first said, wait a minute...All eyes were on that USO final because people were curious if he was really ready to snatch one of those big ones from Federer. He wasn't quite ready yet.

Also the first player since Becker in 1994 to beat the number one, two and three ranked players in the same tournament (Federer, Nadal and Roddick). I don't believe anyone has repeated the feat since Djokovic did it either.

It's not just that he went further than Fedal, but he lost to a very good grass court players both times, a close 4-setter to Grosjean and a brutal match with Ancic (was 1-2 games away to reach the QF and play peak Roger at Centre Court).
His potential as a great grass court player was visible from the start, it's just that results in 2008-2010 suffered due to several reasons. 2009 - mentally and physically exhausted by the time Wimbledon started and 2010 - he had no serve so his results were poor everywhere, which overshadowed his initial performances.
The only bad loss he'd had at Wimbledon was in 2008 against Safin.

Of course I'm trolling a bit about him being grass GOAT but yes he took to grass right away. Usually it takes a few years before guys figure it out so that should have been a sign that he was going to be a force on grass. Most people still didn't see it coming though and those years in 2008 and 2009 may have something to do with it since he underperformed. In 2010, he did ok but like you said he had no serve and lost easilty to Berdych.
