Marat has ended his year

Marat was not very happy with his standard of play at the Madrid Masters and has decided after discussion with his coach Hernan Gumy and his management that it would be better to finish his 2008 season now. His mountain adventure which he thoroughly enjoyed, took him out of his rythm and also left him with no energy. He thought he was ready coming back in Moscow but found that the stress of playing back to back tournaments was too much and his body just was not ready to cope with it. He thought he could play at a good level but it didn't happen.

He will take some time off to get his energy levels back and then in 3 weeks time will meet with his coach and they will spend a long period of practice time in Valencia - cleaning up his game and working hard on his approach, his work ethic and his general attitude to the year ahead. The intention is to be ready for the Australian season. Marat knows his ranking will drop but feels it is better to get himself ready for the new season rather than push at this stage.

He will not play in the Davis Cup Final in the US. Basically the Davis Cup team left it up to him to make the decision and Marat decided that right now there are 4 better players than him who are in form and can make sure they play to the best of their ability for Russia. Recently Davydenko won Moscow again and Tursunov won in Bangkok - both on hardcourts which is the surface that the Final will be played on. Marat was proud to be involved in the run up to the Final and has every faith in his fellow players that they will perform to their very best ability for Russia and make it a hard contest against the US.

Marat would like to say thank you to all his fans for their love and support this year through the difficult times and hopes they will continue to support him as he strives to find the level he needs to play well again.

good luck for next year (will he at last play good again ?).
but it's disappointing that he doesn't play the davis cup final against usa... :?

I'm surprised that he wouldn't at least play doubles with Tursunov for Davis Cup, especially since they just won the Moscow title together last week.

I thought that he said right after the US Open that he would finish the season by then...it maybe was a fault to come back early, but afaik he knows it and said that he was aware of this risk...

I'm guessing that it should be his 2007 season..? Hope it's not the 2008 season..

I think the problem with Marat is that he hates playing tennis. He didn't enjoy it when his mother made him work hours as a kid; now he finds it hard to endure the grind of practices and matches. Guys like Federer seem to genuinely enjoy the game, which makes it much easier to maximize their talent.

He also has (apart from maybe Nadal) the 2nd best results of any active player on the tour.

He does not. Federer, Hewitt, Nadal, are all clearly ahead of him in "results".
The only argument for him being ahead of Roddick is his having 2 slams to Roddick's 1, apart from that he would be clearly behind him too.

I keep wondering what Marat even bothers to play any more. There's no joy in it for him. I would think he could probably live pretty comfortably on what he's made if he quits now.

He really should just hang up the rackets. Sometimes it looks like he's not even trying, which is a shame for someone with his talents.

Well it depends how highly you value Davis Cup and the #1 ranking...

highest world ranking:
Safin: 1
Nadal: 2
Hewitt: 1
Roddick: 1

Davis Cup titles:
Safin: 2
Nadal: 1
Hewitt: 2
Roddick: 0

Grand slam titles:
Safin: 2 (two of the four slams)
Nadal: 3 (one of the four slams)
Hewitt: 2 (two of the four slams)
Roddick: 1

Masters Series titles:
Safin: 5
Nadal: 9
Hewitt : 2
Roddick: 4

more important than masters series titles, you forget Masters (cup) titles:
hewitt won it 2 times, none of the others ever won it.

Davis Cup is not part of the ATP

So your statement isn't quite true;)

I never said the Davis cup was part of the ATP. But winning it is an amazing result that many players put just below winning Grand Slams, and I said Safin has the 2nd best results (after federer obviously) of any active player except maybe Nadal.

Grand Slams are not ATP events either, and I never mentioned ranking points or the ATP or the ITF. OK sure, Guga hasn't officially retired so I guess he can still be considered 'active'.

Fifth best, after Fed, Nadal, GUGA(yet active) and Hewitt.
You can argue about Hewitt, BUT Hewitt 26 titles(Safin 16),won the TMC, US Open, AO, TMC finalist 6 slam QF's, 4 SF's...Numerous MS finals...

Nadals highest ranking is only #2, he's only won 1 Davis Cup title (to Safins two), and he's only won one of the grand slams (Safin has won two of the grand slams).
Depends what you think is important.
And yes Hewitts place is up there with Safin but out of the 9 Masters Series titles he could only ever win Indian Wells!!

that is sad. but you can't really say that his mom made such a bad choice... he isn't all that bad at tennis after all.

Im telling you, 2008 Safin is gonna beast one people. Watch.

Amen to that...this is just what Safin needs, a little hiatus to clear his head and to start fresh. If he finds motivation and the urge to win and grind out every match, he should be number 1 in no time.

Did not know that... What a dumb mother, with his buld and athleticism he would have made a great hockey player.

Add in the fact that Hewitt was number one for 80 weeks including two year end number ones and Lleyton beats out Marat by quite a bit ;) .

May you thrive, Marat!

Marat, do whatever you need to and come back to us in 2008. I attended your match vs. Verdasco at the Tennis Channel Open in Las Vegas. That day you were "on". It was an awesome display of the cleanest, most powerful, laser-like ball striking I have ever seen up close, and there was a stiff wind blowing. You can do it!

I watched that match on the Tennis Channel and fully agree with your assessment. It looked like the Safin of old that day. Unfortunately, he never played like that again for the rest of the year (at least not for back to back matches). Safin lost so many tight matches throughout the middle part of the season that he either led or could've won. Lopez in Miami, Vliegen in Monte Carlo, Davydenko in Rome, Ferrero in Hamburg, Lee in Los Angeles. Obviously, Safin's never been known to be mentally tough, so all of those losses had to drain his confidence big time. He found every way possible to lose those matches. It's all about confidence for him. I really hope he can turn things around and be a factor in 2008. You get the feeling that all it would take would be one breakthrough result.

Well what it tells me is that he is going to make an effort to get back to where he was/ where he wants to be. and Hopefully be prepared to make a run at his most successful tournament the AO. Either way Russia would love to have a guy of his level and quality for the davis cup final, perhaps he may change his mind...

Sorry, just confused.

P.S. No one tell Shcmad.. he may need to be medicated if he finds out no more Safin for any period of time.
