Maria on medical or mental break?

Is Maria Sharapova really physically injured or has she just been hiding out from Serena for the last few months?

Leading up to this timeout she had an erratic and short-lived coaching change, her ex-coach commented publically about her fragile mental state re Serena Williams, she got beat a few more times by Serena, and Maria lost her cool and made some comments about Serena's personal life to the press.

I think there's a good argument that Maria had a mental breakdown and that's the reason for the break rather than any physical injury.

Lord Jesus and Mary in Heaven!

You must not follow Twitter because Maria has been busy with NY Fashion week and supporting her business ventures.

She's injured and doing Maria these days. Enough said.

There's been no pictures/video evidence that she's been practicing since the US Open,so she's obviously been told to rest her shoulder. She's a competitor and would never miss events if she wasn't injured

Hey Angie,

1. This is not twitter.

2. Maria getting more involved with things outside tennis supports the idea that she avoided the last part of the year because of her mental fatigue with getting constantly beat down by Serena.

She tried everything she could to finally get a win after almost 10 years and nothing worked.

New flashy and erratic coaching change. Check

Training harder. Check

Mental games - Date biggest rivals ex. Check

More mental games - Try to publicly pile-on against biggest rival when she is facing media criticism. Check

Nothing worked and so Maria exited from the game.

There's probably a good chance she might never come back if Serena stays healthy.

Yes, she is a good competitor, but how many beatdowns in a row from the same person can she take?

Obviously, loss after loss after loss to the same person has got to have had an effect on her psychologically.

What's the point of showing up to play just to make it to the finals and lose to Serena Williams one more time?

At some point after 10 years of losses, she's got to have given up hope.

The only hope she may have is that she is younger than Serena and Serena's age may catch up with her soon enough for Maria to take advantage of it.

Her life doesn't revolve around her. What do you think she'd rather do,win a slam/title or beat Serena? Definitely, she'd take the first option. She can only play who's in front of her,and has won 4 slams, each of which Serena was entered into, and 25 other titles. It's a respectable career, and she'll have the chance for more glory, that's her goal, not beating Serena.

Yeah, and you're no Dr. Phil, but I'll get to that.

Maria completed her career slam less than 16 months ago. Everyone knows Serena owns Maria these days, including Maria. I think you might overexaggerating the "10 year" claim. I recall watching the 2004 Wimbledon finals and that wasn't 10 years ago. Sigh.

Yeah, training harder and changing coaches equates to mental anguish. Everyone knows that. Based on your theory, you must think Novak Djokoic and Roger Federer suffer from the same psychological affliction that you accuse Maria of possessing.

Your recollection of events is non-sequitor. Serena's interview for Rolling Stone magazine sparked an apology and began a media spat which Maria didn't create, but responded to. Both women were wrong in this instance but let's be fair, it was Serena who started that little spat publicly. Yes, it was a little spat.

Maria exited the game because of a well-documented shoulder, career-injury that she is nursing. Nothing novel about that. I do find your baseless claims of Maria nursing a mental breakdown or distress as being delusional to some extent. It makes me think you might have some beef with Maria, a person you've never met or have no personal relationship with. A casual fan might have some concerns and voice questions, but you speak as though you have some information that's not publicly available which makes me think what you say is very delusional. Ironic, huh?

If you follow Twitter, to see what she doing and has to say on a daily basis totally disproves your theory. People who have severe psychological impairment do not actively participate socially or engage with society.

No, you are no Dr. Phil. In all fairness, alledging mental defect of a public figure without proof is slanderous at best. That's not a useful purpose of participating in a discussion forum.

She has a legitimate shoulder injury, but she does seem to enjoy pursuing her business interests.
Doesn't make sense that an injured professional athlete would pursue business ventures while not participating in their primary career. Not at all. (smile)

In defense of Maria, she's made millions and millions of dollars losing to Serena over the past few years, while becoming the highest paid woman in sports. What incentive is there to change that after you covet a career slam?

Lunch break.
She needs time to add radioactive waste from Chernobyl to her diet,
so that she can grow even taller. 6'2" is just not tall enough for a woman.
She needs to be at least 7 ft.
She needs the gamma ray accident that Serena had if maria were to even have a chance. Hulk smash! (or is it slam?)

Yes well I consider Maria's peak years to be 2004-2008 and she only played Serena 4 or 5 times I think, and actually won a couple of those matches. So it's not like Serena was a big issue for her until about 2011 at the ripe old age of 30...

Maria has only beaten Serena twice, both times in 2004.

She is something like 13 losses and 2 wins or worse.

The whole Jimmy Connors thing and then suddenly being out for the rest of the season in addition to dating Serena's ex make me think Maria is a little mental.

Time will tell.

She will be back; her attitude is not one of "I'm tired of this," but one of "I'm disappointed with my troubles," which is the kind of attitude leading to conscious changes in her game, rather than bailing. Sure, anything is possible, but the tone from many of her post match losses does not indicate retirement.
