Mats Wilander as Coach

Mats Wilander seems to have one of the best minds in tennis, along with Daren Cahill and Brad Gilbert.

Of all the tennis players out there, why would he be coaching Paul Henri Mathieu? I know he's talented... but there are other more talented and promising players.

Federer needs a coach, Safin could use a good one, Murray needs one...etc

There are so many more promising players out there, i'm surprised that nobody tried to pick Wilander up, and that Wilander would even be interested in coaching a Mathieu.

I dunno if Fed needs a coach :) I would definitely stay away from Safin if I were a coach. He's at the tail end of his career and a total head case. Kinda sad, the guy should have a couple more majors under his belt.

Roddick could use another coach. Connors isn't doing cr*p with that forehand, or his volleys.

Mathieu is a very talented player, who has not fulfilled his potential. He has enough game, his problems are largely mental and Wilander has said as much. When he was younger it was thought Mathieu would be the saviour of French tennis, such is his talent, but it didn't work out that way. He is definitely worthy of any coaches efforts, someone just needs to bring out his confidence and self belief, because it clearly does not come out naturally. On the other hand, sometimes stuff like this cannot be fixed. Some people are just naturally mentally tougher than others.

Like so many things in life, the answer is probably as simple as Mats offered or PHM asked....

Agreed on both counts.

He had already had a try with Marat.

Really? I hadn't heard this, and I'd find it odd that he'd have braved Marat...

Matts could teach those youngons how to roll paper, that about it.

Huh? What on earth are you saying? I should discount how much you know about Wilander given you can't spell his name, but nonetheless...

I saw him coaching PHM in Sydney on the practice courts, and he seemed very analytical and constructive, and PHM was very receptive. Sure, it's a new relationship, but nonetheless, it was a healthy one to see.

Wilander has a contract with the French Tennis Federation (FFT). This is why he coached Golovin and now Mathieu. Mathieu is a huge talent who has underachieved; this seems like a great coaching choice for Wilander.

He did seem to help out Golovin a lot Im not so sure Mathieu is as talented as previous posters seem to think though
