Monte Carlo to remain a Masters Event

I am fine with this as long as they keep Hamburg demoted. Hamburg definitely does not deserve to stay a Masters event and 3 Masters events on clay was crazy anyway.

if they are dropping the player commitments, how is it still a ms? kinda defeats the purpose.

so I assume there will still be 9 masters(still dropping hamburg & adding shanghai)? guess this isn't a big change after all.

madrid is switching to clay, so there will still be 3 clay ms.

What's crazy is 6 master events on hard courts. Talk about unfair. Now it's 2 clay events and 7 hard courts events. BS.

Well if they have the same ranking system as this year, you would lose out big time on potential points if you skipped any of the Masters events. So I doubt any top players would skip.

Hamburg was terrible and it was long time for it to go. They should have 1 or 2 Masters events on grass instead of 7 on hard courts. 2 on clay is more then enough.

3 on clay 2 on grass and 4 on hard courts would probably be the ideal amount. Since hard courts is Nadal worst surface, it is very unfair that it is the majority of all the Master Series. Europeans in general are getting screwed.

I would be fine with that I guess but dont hold the 3rd clay Masters in Hamburg anymore.

^Madrid is going to be on clay(& move to May)

Since they are dropping the player commitments for Monte Carlo, they should heavily fine players that play Monte Carlo & are conveniently 'injured' for indoor ms later in the year.

I agree with the above statement but they need to at least balance the Master Series on all surfaces. But on grass it is just not feasible.

It should be more equal and there should be a grass masters, but it's not really that "unfair." Most of the outdoor hardcourt events are fairly slow, so it's not like clay courters cant compete. They do better at hardcourt events than alleged hardcourt players do on clay.

Moose, I read somewhere or heard that was the proposal... is that final? Starting in what year

http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=125215

there were some other threads/yahoo articles that confirmed that, but I can't find them. 2009 is when the changes start, this will be the schedule(madrid is building a new facility, its seems like it is a done deal, and it will be a combined wta/atp event)

Indian Wells(hard)
Miami(hard)
Monte Carlo(clay)
Rome(clay)
Madrid(clay)
Canada(hard)
Cincinnati(hard)
Shanghai(indoor)
Paris(indoor)

And Masters Cup(London)

and for those complaining about grass masters, give it up, it will never happen because it simply isn't feasible(FO & Wimbledon will never change dates, & having a madatory ms so soon after/before a slam won't make the players too happy anyway)

I've never heard one player say they wanted a grass masters, fans are the only ones talking about it.

Why not make the Master's Cup in London a grass tournament? After all, this is England we're talking about. Then again, the rain might be an issue. Oh well, just fueling the grass master's lobbying.

There have been several players who've brought up having a grass masters. Henman, Bjorkman, Roddick are a few who've talked about it in the press.

It's not going to happen anytime soon because there isn't a suitable venue and the schedules are too close together. If they had a month in between the end of Roland Garros and the start of Wimbledon and had a venue then it could happen.

Incidentally this was what my tennis channel contest article was about this year.

Good, if they had to get rid of one they could take Hamburg. Too cold there and fans don't show up if there's no Germans.
