Most Memorable Individual Sporting Moment for you

Most of us having competed not only in tennis competitions but in other sporting competitions, casual or competitive. I play tennis to enjoy the competition, get exercise and have fun with people I usually like.

The other day I played a match in which I came back from a huge deficit to win. I got lucky and hit a few decent shots but the match is very memorable to me. It's not the best match in a sporting competition I've played but one of the most memorable.

So it got me to thinking that I'd like to see a thread in which others discuss some of the most memorable competitions they have competed in. It could be tennis, hockey, chess, checkers, any video game, soccer, American football, tic tac toe, whatever.

Perhaps my own most memorable is when I won the Championship of my own High School in chess. That doesn't seem like much but it was the circumstances considering the player I beat was at the time and is now presently an extremely strong tournament player. It came down to one decisive game which I was lucky enough to win. I have played better and have done better in other chess tournaments and competitions but that was perhaps the most memorable.

What's your most memorable or your series of most memorable sporting moments?

Watching an athlete I coach receiving her Paralympic medal tied with another I work with winning the World Junior Masters Title for the first time (he has since won 3 in a row, but the first was the most special).

I beat a much stronger than me opponent at an Interclub Judo competition when I was about 10 or 12.That´s all I recall about those Judo years.

I beat a Russian guy once. He was so ****ed he wouldn't shake my hand afterwards he just left in anger and shame. He thought he would crush me. I hit a few aces down the T. It was sweet.

Watching Goran defeating Rafter at Wimby. It was the greatest. He was my favorite for many years and he finally did it.

Little League - Final Game.

Guy I pitched against was named Ted Williams and had facial hair. I hadn't let anyone on base all night, Ted had 2 walks & both teams had tied records - with 1 loss each - for Championship. No Extra Innings, even if game was tied after 7. No winner meant we'd be co-Champs. I usually batted 3rd in our rotation, but was 5th that night, as our usual #5's bat had been on a very hot, consistent tear. Cleanup swung bat like it was a toothpick. Mom & her Mom showed up for final inning. First time GM showed. Retired side & we had last at-bat of season on muggiest & buggiest night I ever played.

Also bears mentioning that the Towns we were from were like Hatfields & McCoys. Rivalry on all fronts was ancient.

Both 3 & 4 hit tall balls caught at Left Center, inches from homers. I'm last up, hoping & literally praying for low & outside, where the feared, whiskered Ted Williams never threw. 3 balls, 2 strikes & low & outside & the only hit of the night was my hottest line drive and it just kept going. It was stunning to see the field ump's index finger go into loop. Mind-bending to get carried from 3rd to home plate. Safely.

Rolled a perfect game in my bowling league after twice before failing in the 11th frame. That's second place, though...two years before in one of my failed attempts at the 300 game, I wrapped up the 289 game with two other high 200's to throw a 769 series. That was less than a handful of non-strikes for the entire three-game series and zero open frames.

That's impressive!

My junior college doubles partner and I were an average #1 team. We'd lose to the best teams handily. Then came the SoCal JC tournament. I was beyond "in the zone." I was out of my mind. We beat every team in straight sets. We thrashed teams that were destined to play for schools such as Cal Berkeley and Arizona State. We became a good team after that. Then we went to different schools.

Being perhaps the worst bowler in history I am very impressed.

Ah, must have been very satisfying.

And I often get tears even watching the video of Goran beater Rafter.

Made a ice-cream cone type catch at second base in Cub Scout softball and then threw out the runner at first for the double play. I had to break to the left as soon as the ball was hit and I barely reached it. Also it was only the second game I ever played in after coming to this country

I remember hitting a walk off grand slam in a little league tournament. My hit barely went over the shortstops head. I can't remember how many throwing errors there were on the play, but I remember the catcher ended up with the ball and I rounded third and goaded him into throwing it to the third baseman. Sailed over his head, so I had a walk off grand slam.

Cool story. But what's wrong with low and outside... that's generally where you want them?

Hit the game winning shot in high school basketball once.

Playing fullback, in high school soccer, ran down an opponents breakaway, blocking shot at last instant. Still lost the game. But, coach shaked my hand afterwards, saying that was the fastest he had ever seen me run.

Topping those would be seeing my kids play sports. My daughter set a city record for the 200 meter dash. Running the anchor leg of the 4x100 to win the city championship. My son playing third base like Brook Robinson, as an 10 year old... charging up on a slow roller down the line, slinging it sidearm across his body to gun down the runner at first. Those are the best. :)

I had a chance to learn martial arts years ago but I declined. When you're young you feel you have better things to do sometimes.

Winning the under-16 tennis championship in my region some six years ago is probably my favorite personal sporting moment. I played my training partner in the finals, which I always found a bit awkward. I was on fire in the last set, so that was a nice feeling – flow.

Two of my favorite moments have come in badminton. Once at high school when I did three or four Becker dives, lobbed while running the other way and finishing it off with a smash. Everyone gasped. Once while playing with my sisters husband I ran back from the net into one corner to scoop up the shuttle before it hit the ground, and then picked up a drop shot while diving, lobbing it over him. I actually have the last one on video.

You must have felt great what everyone gasped at your athletic display.

I saved 9 match points in a second round match in juniors before going on to win the tournament and move up into the highest division in Texas. It was a pretty sweet experience.

I have as a young teen.

Yeah, I was in high school - got off to an okay start, bowled a few games in the 170s - 190s my first few times, which impressed everyone I went with. Then I ended my bowling career with a 97 and an 89. Haven't bowled since.

Hey it happens. It's like tennis. We're only human. Sometimes you play great and sometimes you play like you just started the game.

It's ten frames. Highest possible score is 300.
Oh sorry,I was just thinking of the movie 'Kingpin' and remembering that the Amish bowled a different number of frames, but couldn't remember which way around the 10 and 15 were. I didn't think 100 was too bad for 10 frames? I've only been a dozen or so times, don't think I've ever seen anyone get 150+

Because of bowling' scoring system, there is a huge gap between low 100's and high 100's+ averages. You cross that gap when you can consistently hit "the pocket" (1-3 pin for right handers, 1-2 for lefties). This yields more strikes and easier spares to convert, which gives you the bonus pin counts (next ball for spares, next two balls for strikes). You can get to the 180-190 range just by making spares and and 8 or 9 pins on your first throws, while avoiding open frames due to splits or failed conversions of easier leaves. Getting that 200+ average means stringing strikes together consistently. I hovered below 200 for 10 years of league bowling before cracking that ceiling.

Sounds sweet but also very nerve racking.
