Murray: #1 is my target

Of course #1 is his goal,it should be,especially for someone of his talent and work ethic. However all those "what if" nonsense I don't care about really,if he was supposed to win those matches against Nando and Roddick he would have done so.

Gotcha.

I take your point - but as you say, Murray isn't Hewitt. The additional power in Murray's game changes things. Murray can hit a winner if he chooses to. There's a difference between choosing not to use a tool and not having that tool available to you - that's why I don't think Hewitt and Murray is a perfect analogy.

My opinion is that Murray will be in his prime form 23 - 26. Just my tuppence worth though.

He continues to run despite having bigger weapons. His natural game is to defend. I don't think I've ever seen a 6+ footer run as much as him. It's going to take it's toll in a few years I think.

Im just going to watch tennis as normal and see where Murray is in 3-4 years. He could achieve many great things by then or he could be flash in the pan nobody struggling to stay in top 30.

Right now I just cant get past how dang ugly he is. I want to grab that nasty mop hair head of his and rub his face in the dirt to wipe some of that ugly off!!!!

LOL - well I don't think he's THAT ugly myself, but he sure would do well to get rid of that sauerkraut growing on his chin and cheeks.

Murray never seems to learn. The guy just needs to shut up and play until he actually wins something. Once again, he's setting himself up to choke. And pronouncements like this are the precise reason why everyone will jump on his back again when he does fail.

That's all true. He's talking trash, like Djokovic in his younger days.

I have a few hate threads ready in case Murray loses in the early rounds of USO. If he gets taken out by Safin, Karlovic or Berdych, we're gonna roast the little punk.

The guy was being sarcastic, but here's the thing: I'm certain you realize that what he said is actually going to happen. :) Murray has put himself in an all or nothing position(and his fans follow suit). He wins the US Open or he's a choker. Considering he may have to go through two of the greatest players ever to accomplish it, it's not an easy task. It would be much easier if he simply kept his mouth shut and played. But certain sportsmen cannot help themselves. Certain sportsmen cannot resist setting themselves up to choke.

Hey, lets not say he's talking trash. He may be putting pressure on himself, or setting himself up to look silly if he does not become #1, but that's not trash talk unless he trashes someone else.

Give the dude a break.

LOL - you must be reading a different article - is it the one published in 'Hater's Monthly'?

Murray said his target is number 1 - what exactly is wrong with the world number 2 expressing that view?

He then went on to say that it would be disrespectful to Rafa and Roger to say that he would be disappointed not to win a slam. He said:

"At 22 I'm still pretty young. I'd love to win a Slam, that's obviously one of my biggest goals, but to say that I'd be disappointed to not win one with the level of competition that's around now is a little bit disrespectful to the players.

"You've got some of best ever playing right now."

So - no proclamations that he's going to win a slam, at NYC this year or any other one for that matter. The complete opposite in fact. So quite how he is setting himself up for this 'all or nothing' USO is utterly beyond me.

Finally, in order to 'choke', one first must be in a winning position. So how Murray not winning the USO next month would represent a 'choke' is also beyond me (unless he lost from 2 sets and a double break up in the final).

Happy hating.

We are happiest hating :-D

If Federer could say he dreamed of winning WO from the age of what ? seven? ten? , then its okay in my book that *any* pro should target #1. Maybe Djokovic's problem is that he is not targetting #1, and is content with being where he is.

Vamos Andy !!!!

Nothing wrong with saying #1 is your target and it should be if you're in the top 4 today.. but this "if I..." talk has got to go. If you can rationalize something to yourself with an "if I..." statement you do not have the #1 mindset, young Jedi.

Obviously, it's his body of work, not just this article. And yes, if you talk about gaining the #1 spot for an entire calendar year yet can't even muster a single slam, you're a choker. If you win every 3 setter possible, but fall on your face every time the calendar reads, 5 sets, you're a choker. As much as he's talked in 2009, he needs to win this slam. He placed the pressure squarely own his own shoulders. Regardless, if he doesn't win one by the Australian, he completely ceases being the guy everyone talks about as an up-and-comer with talent. At that point, he's permanently the choker who can't win the big one until he does win the big one. And psychologically, that can be an impossible cross to bear. The longer it goes, the more difficult it gets. I'll be watching with a beer and popcorn. :)

No, he doesn't need to win a slam this year. He won't turn into a pumpkin if he doesn't.

Your post is one of the saddest I've ever seen on here. I can't ever imagine feeling joy at watching someone fail, or salivating in anticipation at the thought of someone failing.

It says a lot about you. I feel sorry for you man.

Well, you probably take things a bit too seriously then because if you haven't noticed, every Fed fan on this forum is praying and waiting for Rafa to fail while every Rafa fan can't wait for Fed to do the same. That's sport, guy. Lighten up. Hell, I even made fun of Rafa myself when he lost to Soderling.

There's a level of venom in your posts about Murray that is simply not there in the other posts you allude to. Sporting rivalry and banter is great - I'm all for it - I seem to be able to manage it with other posters on here no problem. But that's not what you do wrt to Murray. You seem determind to warp things out of all context (see you 'all or nothing' assertion above) and almost seem to get sexually aroused at the thought of Murray failing.

You seem to hate Murray more than you love Rafa. And that's sad man.

Murray won't be No.1 this year, maybe next year if he does alot better at the Aussie Open but not this year. I'm pretty confident Roger will win the Open and then if he does well at Cinncy, and he has hinted that he wants to win cinncy, then the No.1 spot should be wrapped up for the rest of the year....he doesn't have many points to defend at the Tour Finals and he should retain Basel and win in Tokyo.

Roger made R4 @ RG in 2000; QFs at RG and Wimbledon and R4 @ NYC in 2001, R4 @ AO and NYC in 2002, R4 @ AO 2003 - before winning his 1st slam.

Roger winning a slam didn't come out of nowhere - he just found it hard to win one and it took him a while. There is no doubt that he would have been called a slamless wonder on here by some.

Yes, but Roger wasn't number two in the world with 4 MS titles to his name.

I'm not saying that Federer's career at that point was better.

LOL Yes, you most certainly take things too seriously. I suppose that post was more effective than I thought it was.

I see you say you're gutted every time Murray loses. Unless he's your brother, guy, you shouldn't be gutted from a tennis match. If you are or if you allow some everday message board banter to bother you this much, you probably need to find a new hobby.

Again you stretch the truth. I've said I was gutted on here once - when Murray missed his chance to make a Wimbledon final.

You accuse me of taking things too seriously and not being able to take a joke, and yet I seem to be able to do just that with most on here.

Maybe it's the fact that nothing you've said about Murray has ever contained an iota of humour that has made me miss the 'joke'?

But hey, I'll roll with it. Apologies for not realising that you were only having a laugh. I'll try and be more appreciative of your humour in future and not take thigns too seriously.

That's a fair point. I was thinking more up to the point where both of them made their first slam final - until then it's pretty similar on a year by year basis - although obviously they diverge when Roger wins his 1st slam final and Murray loses his.

French as well. That's why it stuck in my mind.

I'm sure you can, but you've also been pretty quick to turn hyper-defensive when Murray is criticized in the same manner Nadal and Fed are criticized on this forum thousands of times a day.

Maybe it's the fact that nothing you've said about Murray has ever contained one iota of humour that has made me miss the 'joke'?

I didn't say it was comical. I thought your reaction to it was comical. You have 50 current posts on this forum claiming Nadal is doomed or Fed should retire and I've yet to see one reaction like yours(again, I'm joking with you).

But hey, I'll roll with it. Apologies for not realising that you were only having a laugh. I'll try and be more appreciative of your humour in future and not take thigns too seriously.

That's fine, and I'll back off the Murray doomsday posts.

What TOSH ! that's what some people who start silly threads like to portray. there are a lot of Rafa and Fed fans, who like the other player too, and some fans of both. We just don't start threads every time one of them wins/loses/or gives an interview.

People like you (perhaps) need to make such generalizations because your opinions rely on these, and the threads you start (in case you do) also rely on such black and white situations.
