My brother and myself rallying *VIDEO*

Just a medium length video of myself and my brother doing some practice rallies (we usually play first to 11 win by 2, no serving since we're just practicing groundies).

Just thought I'd share to get some feedback. Positive and negative replies are both welcome. We both started playing SERIOUSLY about 2 years ago. Not sure if that matters.

My favorite shot is my backhand! My favorite shot in the video begins at 3m36s.

I'm the dude in the black shorts and CB3.3s.

*Feel free to enjoy some piano/guitar playing in my channel as well. 8)

I've never seen anyone hit the ball the way you do... Very compact stroke.

Your BH looks ok, but I believe your FH can improve in many ways. I'll wait for people with more experience to share their opinion. =P

Ps.: You both hold the racket so high in the handle. o_O

I never really noticed that, but it is rather high on the forehand side, haha.

This probably explains the compactness. I feel pretty good about my forehand, but it does break down at times and I do feel a little tight when hitting it - especially cross court (which is a bit unorthodox in itself).

I'll definitely be loosening up my grip and lowering it on my forehand.

Sorry I had an urge to fix that, anyway that's an awesome look facility where is it at?

Funny you mentioned the fix as I tried to fix it but it wouldn't let me edit the thread title, haha. Damn middle school grammar!

It's a facility at Western Michigan University.

My brother and "me" rallying actually. This is who rallying? This is "me" rallying, this is not I rallying. Grammar **** demands satisfaction.

Nice. How about "who" and "whom", could you explain those?

Whom comes after a preposition.

"I gave the ball to whom?"

"To whom did I give the ball?"

Who is for basically everything else.

"Who did I greet?"

"I greeted who?"

My son is such a stickler for grammar, so he constantly corrects me on such things. ;)

While we often see criticism of people taking too long of a takeback (usually called the WTA takeback in these parts), I think you could benefit from a longer takeback. You should be able to get more power and take the ball a little more in front.

Now to the important issue of grammar!

"To whom did I give the ball?"

"I greeted who?"

You are doing it wrong.:(

Here's the correct way to think about who and whom. Who is a subject pronoun and whom is an object pronoun.

This is why your last two examples are incorrect.

"Whom (obj) did I (subj) greet?" is actually proper grammar.
Likewise:
"I(subj) greeted whom (obj)?

When you say that you've been playing seriously for 2 years, what do you mean?

Have you taken lessons?

Yes, you really need to learn to use the whole body more; if only
for safety. Hitting pretty good balls, but look like TE waiting to happen.

Thanks for the input thus far guys.

By seriously I mean that we've actually taken a few lessons, watch videos reguarly, and really care about what we're doing on the court, rather than ball bashing mindlessly as we used to (though it can still be fun!).

How about my backhand wing?

It's a great game and you guys are doing fine or even good for just 2 yrs and being sort of self taught, but
Need to learn to use the legs, core, and shoulder turn more.
Currently often you both really short-arm your strokes.

Yes, finally someone gets it.

This should give you a good idea as to whether "brother and me" is right or wrong.

People are being too nice - that forehand is gawd-awful. Really atrocious. The elbow barely detaches from your side and there is no takeback. It looks like you have some injury and don't want to extend your arm too much. There is really nothing to salvage from that forehand, you need to start all over again with a new motion. Don't listen to these other people, they're trying to sugarcoat it.

Yeah after having watched it I don't feel too good about my forehand. I can generate good spin with it and such but it lacks consistency and extension.

How about my backhand?

Your point of contact is not far enough in front of you on most of your shots. You will get more racket head speed, better spin, and more control with this small correction. This is a starting point for improvement. There are some other things that will improve your stroke but your point of contact is the easiest fix.

You need ALOT more shoulder turn on your forehand. When you figure out if the ball is forehand or backhand you can turn your shoulders. This will give you enough time to really set up properly and get alot more rotational power. You are mostly arming it now..
