My hope is for Carlos Alcaraz to become #1 by the end of this year!

Hope - not predicting it - I don't like all the "this is definitely going to happen" inane posts on here. He would need to win or make it to several more finals and of course for Medvedev, Nadal and Tsitsipas - his closest rivals for #1 - to not do quite so well. If he could win 3 more tournaments at 1000 or 2000 points he could certainly be year end #1, and I would love it. If not, then I hope he is in the top 3 for 2022 and climbs up to #1 in 2023, which is a completely realistic goal.

For now I wish for him a deep run at the U.S. Open and really I want him to win! Then to do really well for the rest of the year. I honestly don't know how he will do - I do believe it's his mental game that needs improvement, when he plays "lights out" tennis there is nobody who can defeat him. He proved this with Madrid, defeating Djokovic, Nadal and Zverev all in a row.

Best wishes for Charly for the rest of 2022!

I hope Alcaraz never gets the #1 ranking EVER, hopefully Medvedev keeps it during all of Alcaraz's prime :happydevil:
Alcaraz has nothing good in him, and really doesn't deserve success....

The only way I’d be ok with Tiny Carl finishing YE#1 is if he Juan the 2-1 Open. But I highly doubt that’ll happen, bud. He’s been disappointing/underachieving since late May-early June.

If he is #1 he won't have earned it through slams won which will dull the achievement
And if Alcaraz wins USO you will say Nadal has two slams so it's dull anyway.
You people should know YE No1 is about points, consistency, being in top form whole year. I know consistency is problem for Rafael fans, but you should get over this issue already.

He would be cockier than Novak ewww. Hard pass.
Ya second this lol. I think he’s easily the most talented of his generation, but I can’t stand his cocky celebrations, his constant chatter with his box and his Sonego-like early grunt which borders on disruption. I love the kid’s game. Obviously he’s got plenty of that. But needs to mature more. Or in other words, needs to lose more.

Rafa was the most humble number 1 of all time ;)

The boy wonder has until next year to become the youngest tennis player to finish the season as world number 1 and thus break the record established by Hewitt in 2001.
This season there is only one name written for that place: His name is Rafael Nadal Parera.

I love Rafa and I would certainly be happy for him! But - I want Carlos to win it! :) Rafa has already won 22, it is time for Carlos to win his first! :) :) :) (and if he can't do it this year he will very likely do it next year!)

You can't minimize the important of two Slams, but the big 3 don't play M1000s. That is a lot of points left on the table. In this case, consistency counts. But zero Slams is a different story.

I don't minimize importance of slams for YE No1, it's very important because of many points those bring. But, zero slams has nothing to do with YE No1 value, because you still need most points and it's hard to achieve. No1 is pure mathematics and is more objective than any bitter/subjective fan opinion.
And, just to let you know, big 3 is gone. Fed totally, and Novak definitely when we talk No1 stuff (until he's allowed to play normal schedule).

For the last time the reason I don't change my name on here is due to the way it is done. I want to be able to keep adding to my ATP finals post in the general discussion! Perhaps at the end of the year I will change my name on here! (I wish they would let us change our names without having to lose all of our data!)

Alcaraz is certainly a factor for YE#1 -- in third place (Race Standings), only 180 behind Tsitsipas and 1170 behind Rafa. YE#1 is manageable, if he finishes the year in good form. Rafa traditionally doesn't play his best - or all that often - after the US Open, and Tsitsipas is talented, but inconsistent.

I don't understand all the backlash Alcaraz receives, then again, I don't come to this forum to just rip players for not being perfect according to the narrow boxes I set up in my (dysfunctional) mind. How dare he show a little flamboyance once in a while. I've never heard him disrespect another player, and he seems to handle himself quite well.

As for him being a ballbasher, that has as much truth as people who deride Nadal as a moonballer. For those who write that, at least, try to show some understanding of the game Yes, he's a ballbasher with arguably the best dropper on tour and a great understanding of hitting different spins and angles...or maybe, those are all mishits when he tried to bash the ball.

It will be interesting to see how Medvedev does the rest of the year. He hasn't had a great year despite being #1. He has only won one tournament and has made it to a few finals, especially the AO, but he is extremely erratic in his level of play.

I have no idea who it will be. The only one that I would not be happy with who I think has a realistic shot (and in my opinion there are only four who do) is Tsitsipas. The other three would be worthwhile #1's. I want it to be Carlos though - we will have to wait and see how he performs for the rest of the year. If he ends the year in the top 3 I will be extremely happy; if he winds up #1 I will be over the moon with happiness! :) :) :)
