What does Federer have to do to regain #1 by the end of this year?

I just wanted opinions about whether it's possible for Federer to regain the #1 ranking by the end of the year and if so how could he do it?

You can't really have an "opinion" about this. Just crunch the numbers and you will see that Nadal will without a doubt be #1 at the end of the year.

He has to win every tournament he plays the rest of the year and Nadal cant win a single match. Something like that.

Can't be done. Didn't Nadal get the #1 trophy yesterday?

I think that that was a trophy for getting the #1 ranking. I think that the year end #1 trophy will be given out at the Masters Cup. It kind of confused me as well, but Nadal's trophy wasn't the usual year end trophy. And it still is mathematically possible at least for Nadal not to be the year end #1 right now.

EDIT: I mean Nadal got the ATP #1 trophy, not the ATP race/year end #1 trophy.

really? Could you show how? No trolling here, I would just like to see what Fed would have to do because I thought it was impossible.

Fed has 5930 pts., which included last years Madrid. If he wins the tournaments he's entered into (Madrid, Basel, Paris, Shanghai) he'll have 6505 pts. Nadal has 7000 pts, defending Q in Madris, F in Paris, and SF in Shanghai. If you take off all those pts, he'll drop to 6325. That's a difference of 180 pts between Fed's 6505 and Nadal basically not playing the rest of the year. A SF showing in Madrid will clinch the #1 ranking for Nadal.

So basically, Fed has to win everything and Nadal has to do nothing. So, it is mathematically possible, but it's very unlikely to happen.

Nadal better enjoy being No 1 while it lasts ... it certainly won't last for 237 weeks! Besides, I believe Fed has bowed to the inevitable as far as 2008 is concerned. As a Fed fan I really don't care whether he's ever No 1 again ... just so long as he surpasses that 14 slam record.

Ahh yes, I guess it's still possible. I was under the impression before that Federer wasn't going to play Madrid, and that would have made it mathematically impossible.

Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion? Nice rip off there. I just don't think Federer can get back to where he was. I'm a big fan of youth. Murray and Djokovic are in the runnings.

Federer doesn't really have to get back to where he was in order to get the #1 ranking back. Didn't he have 8000 points at one time? In the event that Nadal loses enough points to give up the #1 ranking I would give a 28 or 29 year old Federer just as good a chance as Djokovic. Murray??? That guy has had like 3 good months.

Nadal had like 3 good months in 2005. Age is very important. Murray was held back by a wrist injury. Pretty bad one. Djokovic is due for another breakout I feel. He can bring his game to another level. Federer wishes it was 2006 all over again. I just don't see it.

 ofcourse fed wishes it was 06 again. Federer in 06 was a greater player than all the players mentioned above.

I also think that Federer is smart enough to know that it is all about the slams at this point. He might not make it back to #1, but I think he will have himself in the mix for the slams for at least a couple more years.

Federer is playing 4 more tournys, TMC, Basel, Paris & Madrid. If Federer wins all his matches he will have 6,605 pts.

Nadal is playing 3, Madrid, Paris, TMC. Since Nadal has 7,000 he has to lose 396 pts. Nadal will be #1 if it is a tie, I'm guessing because of slams perfomance. 24-3 to 24-2.

Nadal's performance in 07', Madrid QF 125 pts, Paris F 350 pts., Cup SF 200 pts. If he wins Madrid then the #1 pos. is locked.

Was bored..

Pray!! That is really his only chance of regaining #1 again ever IMO. He may wins some tourneys, possibly even another slam but I think it is a pretty far stretch for him at this point.

I believe you're wrong. Nadal doesn't have to win Madrid to lock his #1 spot.

Oh please drama queen. Fed was a couple of points away from winning Wimbledon this year which would have caused a 600 ranking point swing and created a much narrower gap between 1 and 2. Of course he may not regain #1, but to call it a far stretch is ridiculous.

fed will not be number 1, nor can he be... even if he goes undefeated. he might have to start playing multiple tournies simultaneously haha
