to make a full recovery from a nagging knee problem before
returning to competition and hinted that his participation in
next month's Davis Cup tie against the United States was also in
doubt.

Nadal has already won Davis Cup many times, so it's okay for him to skip it. But Nadal is much more of a team player than Federer, so I wouldn't be surprised if he pushed himself to perform.
