Nadal forehand topspin with conti grip?(!?)

My question is the grip.
Typically one volleys with conti grip, the footage is fuzzy but I assume he's using a conti grip for those half volleys. You can generate some spin with a conti grip but it's nowhere near what he does with his regular forehand.

If you want to be a spin meister then use a more extreme grip than conti.

Nadal might be using Aussie grip for his FH dropshots, volleys, etc. I’d say it’s a “conti grip ballpark” different to pronounced FH drive grips - from strong Eastern and further on for current pro players.

Hard to tell exactly, but after the shot when his arm relaxes the frame is not lined up as it would be with a continental grip, so I would say no.

I use for my fh volley and dropshot reply aussie grip too but always with backspin.
Once i have tried the forward spin with this grip, but it was redicilius bad...no idea how to play it...( i have strong sw forehand grip for grundies, almoust western)

If the ball is close to the net and low, then you may want to use a continental grip for groundstrokes as well as the volley. I use a Continental grip for groundstrokes about two thirds from the net to the service line unless it's a high sitter. But I started with a Continental, went to the Eastern later on an went to the Semi-Western even later on. So I can hit with all three, depending on the situation.

I can slice with aussie grip, but forward spin just make me wonder...

I changed the grip from the eastern to the conti. I dont get it why the fuss is all about the wrist lag. Everytime, i hit the crosscourt foehand using the wrist lag, they stillmcatch the ball.

So i used conti grip, and crushed the ball and they couldnt catch the ball without wrist lag.

I was using a ps85. Wrist lag works with lighter, oversized racquet like nadal.

I believe Nadal's volley grip is closer to an eastern forehand than a traditional continental grip. I've seen him hit backhand slices in person, and there's no question his grip is at least an Aussie grip if not a full eastern fh grip when he slices his backhand. So, I'd say his volley grip is some sort of Aussie.

You can hit topspin with a continental grip. Sampras used to do it a lot with his half-volleys.

Lots of oldtime topspinners used conti grip AFTER the ball bounces.
EASY, if you close your shoulders and take the ball late.
Plenty of good players can topspin low half volleys, but few to none add topspin to non bounce volleys.

For dropshot reply could one hit the ball only infront(?).
I would like to have this shot for dropshot reply.

Rod Laver and the Aussies of old used the Continental grip for everything including forehand topspin.
Continental grip is the best. I use it for everything except the forehand drive. It can be done. But there’s a reason why no one hits like that anymore. However the clips in the video are all half volleys. Doesn’t really count.

It’s still SW. But one photo doesn’t prove anything. Most people adjust their grip on each shot.

It has to be very mild SW, IMHO, looking at the angle of laid back wrist.
Adjusting means he does not have extreme grips that people have been assuming for many years.

Maybe. But again maybe that photo is the 5% where isn’t fully W?

I agree though. I don’t think his grips are as extreme as a lot of people think they are. It’s just that a lot club players still use the eastern grip (even if they claim to use SW). So someone like him who does use full SW or W grip seems extreme. Remember Alberto Berasategui? Now that’s extreme grips.

I was interessed in the dropshot replies, how Nadal do it, see the video.
He certenly hit it with forwards spin, and with a totally different grip than his normal sw grip (strong or not) forehands.
I find it interessant, i dont know, other pros do that or not.

I lag just fine with an 85 inch racquet, or a 65 inch racquet, Federer did too.

No, if you use wrist lag to hit crosscourt for clean winner, it wont be successfully. So i changed it, using conti grip, the ball will be deeper near the baseline, allowing me to chip and charge to the net to shorten the points.

Put your knuckle on the ridge between the bevels.

So each mm rotation around the handle we are gonna give a name to now? This is Chas level anal(ysis), functionally it is same as conti so just call it conti. Not you personally Jolly, but in general, why does this forum go into so much detail on irrelevant ****?

The same way Roger uses in between eastern and semi-western on his FH ;)

No he plays eastern in a pistol grip.

No he plays eastern in a pistol grip.

I just say "here hold the racquet like this." Then if they change the grip I whack their knuckles with a ruler.
