Nadal is the most dominating player of his era against top players

Federer IS a baseliner. Anyone that plays 90% of his career from the baseline IS a baseliner. Oh, and junior tournaments? Please.

Nobody said he isn't a baseliner.

he is not a baseliner by nature though, as proven by his play in the past. he is a baseliner because it works best with these conditions.

BigServer1, great points on the thread. Some sane posts for a change, especially coming from someone that seems a Federer fan. Good perspective.

Federer has become somewhat of a baseline/allcourt player. Typically, baseliners only come to net when the other player is barely getting the ball returned. Federer still approaches and takes more risks on his net play. I would still say federer is closer to an allcourt player because of the tactics he uses, but he is definitely comfortable trading shots from the baseline.

Fed is an all court player - he can play from the baseline, he can s&v, he play great defense from the back of the court. He typically does all of these things in his matches. Djok/Nads/Murray? No comparison.

I am definitely a Fed fan first and foremost, and while I don't like Rafa when he plays Fed, I like Rafa overall, and love what he has brought to tennis. I really don't like it when people try to disparage Nadal, his achievements or his career. For Fed fans to do that only makes Fed look worse, since Rafa's got a big edge h2h with Roger.

I agree that Federer is predominantly a baseliner. He's the most consistently all court player in the top 10, and he's still a great net player (see Wimby 2012 final for reference). He won 2003 Wimby serving and volleying, and beat Sampras at Wimbledon serving and volleying as well.

Once 2004 rolled around though, he started to camp out at the baseline more. Clearly it has been effective for him, but what makes his baseline game even more effective has been his ability to hit great approach shots and finish points off at net. His all around game and good net play has come in real handy in winning 7 Wimbledon titles and 5 US Open titles, as well as a lot of smaller fast court tournaments throughout his career.

Yeah right. He is not even the best volleyer in the top 10 right now, but that somehow translates to him being a "great" s&v in the 90s. ****ism.

Clueless...you have never watched Federer during his early years. My post is for the folks who have seen him played s/v back then, so don't add useless comment if you know thing about Federer.

You're an embarrassment.

Federer is not a baseliner. he became one because the situation required it.

he would serve and volley very often before they eliminated that aspect out of the game. only an absolute moron would lump him in the same category with the other 3.

Nadal winning on faster surfaces is completely irrelevant. he is downright ordinary when comparing it to his clay success, which is what people have been saying

Beeotch please!

You Fedephants trip me out with 'Federer is this or not this only because of this or that'

He truly is a god to you

Pathetic!

I suggest you deal with reality and not your or other Fedephants' irrational imaginations

Federer is a predominantly a baseliner; period, point, blank!

early years; you mean when he was hardly winning anything

I would like to know his H2H against these opponenets on surfaces other than clay. The main reason he has such a good H2H is because other players lose to nadal on clay, but they don't get to play him as much on other surfaces because Nadal does go as consistently deep in other tournaments. Simple as that.

Weak retort...

Again, there are still fast surfaces and Nadal has won on those. !

What?

Nadal has won the WTF? When did that happen?

Nadal is the best of the rest, but he is not in the same ballpark as Federer, when we are talking about fast surfaces.

The USO was very slow last year but that so far has been an abberation and Nadal did not win last year BTW.

US Open has been gradually slowed down. Also, you conviniently failed to mention, that in the final were two typical grinders. The better grinder won last year.

Also you keep trying to distinquish Federer from the other top players. He is generally more aggressive than Nadal, Nole, Murray; but at heart he is still a baseliner -- he is certainly no Sampras -- with great defense and heavy spin on his strokes! He does not hit flat like Berdych, an inform Delpo, Soderling, or Agassi did.

He is not a S&V eyer, if that is what you are implying, I agree with you. But he can and does use S&V, when the opportunity presents itself (Madrid was one fantastic tourney, wasn't it?). And his ability and, indeed, use of different playing strategies define him as allcourter. An allcourter, who can and does adapt. Anyone, who is denying that, is making a laughing stock of himself.

Besides, Federer is outhitting all those players almost every time they play, so, it doesn't matter what you say. He adapts to big hitters better than anyone on tour. Deal with it.

And the new grass matches are generally far more entertaining than the old grass (excpet for a few Agassi classics). I was not talking about matches in general. I too would prefer that the surfaces be sped up somewhat. i thought last years USO was way too slow!!

That is your opinion. I think exactly the opposite. 20 stroke rallys at Wimbledon are plain boring.

And, I do not believe for a second, that you want the surfaces to be sped. You just said, that you prefer long rallies at Wimbledon. How can this happen, if the grass is slick and fast?

You have no idea what you are trying to say.

And please stop resorting back to Federer's junior days; shows extreme desperation!

Ah. You hate to be reminded, that actually Federer played and won with a style, that you say he did not execute!

Some badd news for you. You will be reminded of that.

The way I see it, you are desparate. Saying, that Federer didn't won anything until the surfaces were not slowed down, when it is clear (and it has been the consensus for years), that Federer is a late bloomer.

Federer is an all-courter, who stays on the baseline, because the modern game requires it. The moment he saw an opening for S&V he used it. Remember Madrid 2012? Remember his match against Sampras?

So, now Wimbledon for juniors is not a good enough measure, if a player can S&V on fast slick low-bouncing grass?

Please, do us a favour, think before you post.

Federer is a great S&V in your books, despite him having S&V'ed less than 10% of his career? And I should think before I post?
