Rafa & Sponsor - Richard Mille

Rafa signed a new ten-year deal with Richard Mille.

EDGAR, Dec. 4, 2016: ¤¤ Richard Mille opens up about watchmaking.
(Excerpts)
The man who spends seven to eight years on a watch feels the luxury business is artificial and spills on how he got Nadal as a brand ambassador.
The Frenchman is a relative newcomer to the luxury watch market but is already one of its major players. Mille spoke to EDGAR about his brand’s relationship with Rafael Nadal and why making watches is “blood and tears”.

How long do your watches spend in development?
Richard Mille: Sometimes seven or eight years. Of course that affects the price. People ask me sometimes, how come a watch can cost so much? So I explain the process to them and the tons of development that it takes to produce just two pieces. Producing watches is blood and tears. There’s a French phrase we use: ‘the mountain gave birth to a mouse.’

How did your collaboration with Rafael Nadal begin?
RM: When we first talked, Rafa was not willing to enter into a discussion about wearing a watch during a match. He refused at first. But he loved the brand.

Why did you choose him?
RM: He is considered to be a very physical player; he’s similar to the golfer Bubba Watson [another Richard Mille ambassador] who hits the ball a very long way. I do extreme watches for extreme conditions and I love to put my watches in danger so I chose Nadal. I like to go to the battlefield!

Complicated watches aren’t typically seen as being compatible with sport, are they?
RM: People say you should never wear a tourbillon to play golf, but I say no. I believe you can have a very sophisticated, complex watch that is also easy to wear. I love extreme complexity combined with everyday use, I love that. And Nadal is the perfect instrument for those two elements.

What do you remember about the first watch you made for Nadal?
RM: Ha! Nadal said he wanted it to be extremely light, shock resistant, and comfortable. He said, “I don’t want to feel it, I want it to feel like a second skin.” I went to the factory and told my developers I wanted to make a watch under 20g. My technical director said I needed a holiday, and that I must be tired to ask such a crazy challenge. But we succeeded. The watch weighed 18g.

Did Nadal like that first model?
RM: I gave him the first prototype to train with in July 2009, with the idea that we would launch it at the 2010 French Open. He broke five watches playing tennis – he smashed them up!

Is the collaboration going to continue?
RM: Yes, we just signed a new ten-year deal. I was in Monte Carlo recently and I was chatting with the driver who drives all the tennis players around. I asked him who was the nicest player and he said Rafa because he always asks ‘how are you?’ I saw him training in Paris once and afterwards watched him sign autographs for kids for one hour. Rafa is a fantastic, beautiful person. ¤¤

The best Spanish player in 2016? No, it's not Rafael Nadal!

Marc Lopez and Lara Arruabarrena have been selected as the best Spanish tennis players for 2016.

Lopez, who is playing the Spanish Championships in Manacor this week with Rafael Nadal, thanked everyone for the award. 'It was my dream to win a Major title and I did it with Feliciano (Lopez). And then the gold medal, something unexpected happened thanks to Rafa.'

Arruabarrena broke into the top-70, won two doubles titles in and one singles title in Seoul.

The XI Annual Gala of the Spanish Olympic Committee

December 14, 2016

The Spanish Olympic Committee held its annual gala in Madrid on Wednesday.

The President of the Spanish Olympic Committee (Alejandro Blancore) said in his speech that Rafa was the best flag bearer in the world. :)

Rafa was chosen to give a speech on behalf of the Spanish Olympic athletes. A summary of Rafa's speech, made by GSS:
¤¤ Rafa starts with saying that giving speeches isn't his forte, even less so talking on behalf of his Olympian colleagues, but he has been chosen to do it. He says he wants to begin with thanking all companies that help athletes to fulfill their dreams. Rafa emphasizes the need to support/fund our [Spain] sport at the early stages. Sports in general need their continued support so that athletes can keep on fighting to make their dreams be their lives.
Then Rafa congratulates all the present Olympians, as well as those athletes who fight & compete every day to be able to participate in OG. Finally, Rafa thanks the media, colleagues & everybody attending the event. ¤¤

After his speech, Rafa was told not to leave as there was a surprise for him. The surprise was that, finally, Rafa was handed the highest Olympic Honor ("Orden Olímpica") that was unanimously approved by the Executive Board of the Spanish Olympic Committee a long time ago, but Rafa has always been so busy that they never found a date to give it to him. :)

No tourney pre Wimbledon?

Yeah, strange one that. Given his crap results at Wimbledon the last 5 years, you would think playing a grass warmup would be especially advisable (unless he's basically given up on grass and is only going through the motions of playing Wimbledon because it's a Slam)! o_O

I'm pretty sure he will add an event before Wimby. It's just that it isn't confirmed yet.

However, let's wait and see if he's still healthy by the time SW19 rolls around...

Second week atleast at AO, I'd most of all would like a win against an inform or high seeded player. Couldn't care less about Brisbane, all about the AO. The goal is to set himself up nicely for IW-RG

His crap results, as you call it, are nothing to do with not knowing how to play on grass but everything to do with injury and resulting lack of confidence.

"(unless he's basically given up on grass and is only going through the motions of playing Wimbledon because it's a Slam)!"??????????????

Rafa made 5 finals in a row, (absent in 2009 as defending champion) how can he not know how to play on grass?

I’m very excited to announce that Carlos Moya will join my team immediately and working together with Toni (Nadal) and Francis Roig. To have someone like Carlos who is not only a friend but also a very important person in my career is something special. He will be next to me on my practice and competition. At the same time he will also join Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar working with Toni and the technical team.
Carlos Moya:
Toni called me while I was at the IPTL competition. It was great to receive that call. To be able to help Rafa is something special for me and I am sure that, together with Toni, Francis and the rest of the team we have a great common project.
Rafa is a special player and, above all, a great person. I have a lot of trust and confidence that he will be able to continue winning important titles. At the same time, the academy is an important challenge in an already very professional structure with great professionals that do an excellent work.
Toni Nadal:
When I knew Carlos had stopped with Raonic I called him. Carlos has always been a special person for us. He was always there to help us. We think it is the right moment to have him join our team.

Now that Nadal is the doubles GOAT of Spain, should he hold a Mallorcan championship and be the doubles GOAT of Mallorca?

Or maybe he should hold a Nadal family championship and be the doubles GOAT of the Nadal family?

Who will win?

C.Moya says that he’ll be with Rafa during his training sessions in Mallorca, he is also going to travel with the Rafa team but less than with Raonic, because he has been away from home for 18 weeks [Moya has three little kids]. Probably he’ll make his first appearance as a coach at the Australian Open (January 16-29).
Moya is sure that Rafa can win GS tournaments again and regain the world No.1 ranking.
Moya says that a coach can give a 1% improvement that makes the difference between being number one or two in the world, which is a lot.
