You forgot he will
Play 6 kings exho in Saudi Arabia

That event notably takes place before the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga. I wonder what Rafa will do if Spain does not qualify. Would he really end his career with his last two events being a nonsense exho in Saudi Arabia and a nonsense Laver Cup?

I think it’s so hard for him to let go, he will def do some exhos next year even. U will see him in Netflix slam and mumballa championships. Maybe even Oz open next year haha that would be cool

The whole farewell tribute in one reel. Apologies if it’s been posted already
The guy who interviews Rafa at the beginning of the video is Rafael Plaza, a Spanish journalist, who has had a good relationship with Rafa and his team since at least 2015. He has written a lot of great informative articles about Rafa & his team for the Spanish newspapers (mostly for EL Espanol), and Rafa has praised him. He has also written articles for the ATP website Spanish language section (the ATP staff has translated some articles into English.) :giggle:

Everything happens for a reason. If Rafa hadn't had so many medical setbacks, his dominance would have been overpowering. Despite all his setbacks, which have been going on since 2012—more than a decade—he is still right up there among the greatest of all time in terms of numbers. But in terms of the impact he's had on tennis, he is, by far, the greatest.

As I said, this year looks different than just rust, or for Nadal just needing to build match confidence. Today's match will be very telling physically of where he is at.

And it was for me, but not a surprise. He just doesn't have the same continuous spark, fire, and explosiveness on court - too many errant focus and play moments in what are essentially top player winnable. Again, I am all for him ending his GOAT career on his terms, and I ain't knocking him for coming on court and competing. And I am ready for the new kids on the block to take their rightful place in this new era after the last lights of Federrer and now Nadal. Been the BEST of tennis to date and I've enjoyed the heck out of it. And I am ready for the next era!

Getting my tissues ready to watch Nadal at RG. Will be akin to watching Agassi's farewell for me, but 10 x's more.

A picture of 5 great banners the tournament organizers hung to commemorate Rafa's 5 titles has already been posted, but this version of the picture is slighly lightened:

Guys, maybe I lived under a rock. But this is the first time I hear Nadal say that it‘s going to be his last season?

So how is it not his last season then if it's his last Madrid tournament?

It's very likely his last season, that is obvious, but he doesn't want to close the door completely to next season yet. Seemingly he recognizes that if by some miracle he keeps on to 2025, Madrid doesn't make the most sense for his schedule, so better to give the proper farewell now.

And he said goodbye to Barcelona as well. He is done after this year.

That is extremely likely, but I think it's not 100%, which is why Rafa hadn't said so. And I could be wrong but I did not see Rafa make as definitive a statement about never playing in Barcelona again as he did about Madrid.

I'm 99% sure he said in an interview it was great to play there one last time. I don't want him to retire but the guy has been injured the last 18 months, about to turn 38 and he pretty much has said he is done and wants to say goodbye to his favorite tournaments. Barring some sort of miracle I don't see him continuing after this year.

That is my impression as well. But I only understand his statements in English, and he's said far more in Spanish.

He's only been injured because he played hardcourt and grass.
If he's smart enough to avoid hardcourt and grass he has 2 or 3 more French Open titles in him.
2022 Nadal won the AO, got injured at Indian Wells and missed 6 weeks with a broken rib, won Roland Garros and got injured at Wimbledon, and never got to play clay again until 2024.
I told Moya this a while ago and its up to him to make the case to Nadal.

He's not playing the french open 2-3 more times let alone winning it 2-3 more times.

Rafa & Football

Rafa was playing his R4 match at the same time as his favourite football club, Real Madrid, played a very important match - the first leg of the UEFA (Europe) Champions League SF against Bayern Munich (a German team). The football match ended 2-2, the second leg will be played on 8 May. Rafa, an avid Real Madrid fan, asked about the football score in the middle of his match :giggle::

I was more than happy with Rafa‘s results in Madrid. I think you could see how happy he was about it too. I hope he can stay fit and injury free and be able to enjoy the rest of the year on court competing.
Rafa i think may well retire in Paris holding his trophy. He is playing well enough already to be competitive there, remember Madrid has always been harder for him.
I did think Alcaraz was favourite but his form looks worse than Rafa and that arm i think is an issue. Sinner isnt fit either, and Djokovic seems mentally all over the place.
Genuinely think Rafa may be timing things perfectly

You should have put this on General Discussion Board for the LOL's at the usual suspect responses.
There is alot of truth in all that as well. Hard compare eras, but Nadal was the greatest of the Big 3 Era, there really is little doubt when context is added as that poster has done.
But Djoker's fans would report the thread for fan wars and it would be deleted.

We will see if he actually plays Rome.
I would be very surprised if he didn't. He got what he wanted from both Barcelona and Madrid - playing competitive matches, and not getting injured. Even if one believes he played Barca and Madrid to just say good-bye, he at least would play Rome for the same reason. But, I think he's in better shape now than a month ago, so greater competency will be there.

There has been obvious improvement at his age and physical condition. It's going according to plan. Rome is the next step in his return to RG. A win at Rome would be nice, but I don't think that's the main goal. He want's even more match play without injury. If he feels ready to play RG, that is where he will leave it all on the court.

At least that's my plan for him, lol.

You know what? I’m not bothered whether he wins anything this year or not. He has an incredible CV in tennis and nothing can take that away. I’m just rooting for him to be able to play and stay healthy. He got to R4 in Madrid, arguably his weaker venue on clay and he looked so happy to have played himself into good enough form to do so and he didn't get trounced by a freak serve bot in Lehecka, he gave a good account of himself considering all the circumstance. Vamos Rafa!
I just want to enjoy seeing him play the rest of this year in the same vein and hopefully that will reap rewards. I'm more than happy to be able to see this legend of the game play out his final year when so many others haven’t been able to do so.
If he can end up in 2022 form and lift a trophy again, great. If not, then I can live with that. Let’s just watch him bow out doing what he loves and with all the credit he so deserves :)

rest assured, barring physical fitness issues, even today's nadal can stroll to QF and reach semis of RG. He is just too good here. Only issue is the draw. He can theoretically meet Sinner in R1.

Rafa has other plans. He said in his interview with Movistar (a Spanish TV): "I have never said that my career would end in Paris [at the French Open]."
