Nadal Opens for Fed, 3rd Time in a Row

The schedule just came out for tomorrow and for the third time in a row, they put Nadal on the afternoon card and made Fed the night match.

I was looking forward to watching Nadal since he really hasn't played at night yet (maybe once) and I work during the day. I know it's blasphemous but I'm getting sick of seeing Fed at Ashe. Though tomorrow night should be fun if the Delpo fans can find their way in. Ashe, unlike the Grandstand, is all assigned seats and tickets are tough to get.

Good for me because thanks to that I can watch Nadal's matches. Bad for Nadal because if he reaches the semifinals then it will be a night match.

It's really unfair to Fed actually.
1) He will have less time to recover for SF if he wins.
2) Conditions will be further slower which will make it tough to hit through
3) SF will be a day match ( 1 pm / 4pm ).

I can see this taking the normal route..i.e Fed pulls a tough match in QF then folds to Rafa in a dog fight ( likes of 2010 / 11 loses to Djokovic)

Federer will probably own Del Potro. A player who loses back to back sets 6-1 and 6-2 to Thiem can't be in great form.

Mens semi-finals begin at 4. Would likely be the bottom half playing the first match if it is Federer or Nadal.

in regards to no.3 the mens semis actually start at 4. 12pm is when one of the doubles final is, can't necessarily remember if it was mixed or not. assuming its fedal, they will definitely get the 2nd semi slot so that will be a late afternoon/evening match.

QF is gonna be a tough one for Fed. Delpo is fired up and full of confidence now.

However, my money is still on Fed to meet Rafa in the semi.

I think it makes sense they have one big ticket drawer in the day session, and another in the night session. No one is bigger than Rafa and Fed, obviously.

It would be nice to switch them around from time to time, but who knows why the organizers do what they do?

If Dimitrov held his end of the deal, that probably/at least should have been the night match.

Probably. But he has a hard time sustaining his momentum. Is that why Maria broke it off with him? ;)

Though it is unfair that Rafa hasn't gotten many night matches, it makes sense to put Fed and Delpo, two of the most beloved players (and both former champions), in the primetime spot.
If Federer's match sells more tickets and has more home TV viewers than Nadal's match, then they will place Federer at night(prime time) session. Venus isn't a top seeded player but all of her matches are played on Ashe while other higher seeded players played on smaller courts. Don't expect the USTA to fair to all players, they will arrange players on bigger courts base on their popularity/fame.

I don't really think Nadal is complaining. I have heard that during the day the court preforms differently as compared to at night and it seems like he's fine with it. Its disappointing because Nadal's night time shirt is awesome and night matches are easier to watch but Delpo vs Federer is the bigger draw. It makes sense.

They both got their preferred conditions, it's all good.

Nadal will be opening for Fed come Friday...big time...for a beating ;).
when has federer ever in a slam given nadal a beating? i'm not saying fed can't beat nadal but lmao 2 of his wins against him at slams went the distance. how anyone can be confident about that match up is beyond me

Rafa will be more than happy during the day. He looked about ten times as good in the day as he did at night, so it's no bad thing. Trouble will come when he more than likely has to switch back to playing at night if he wins tomorrow.

I'm sure some Argentine's will find their way on to Ashe tomorrow, but I doubt it'll be the same. As you say, the tickets are tougher to get, and more than that given the stadium is so much bigger there's more chance of them being drowned out by larger amount of plebs.

I'm happy about Nadal playing the day session because it means I don't have to stay up late. I bet Rafa is pleased too; he once said he prefers to play early plus the World Cup Qualifying rounds are taking place now and he wouldn't want to miss them.

2006 Wimbledon final featured a bagel ;).

i mean iirc federer also gave a breadstick at AO 2017 but at the end of the day that 1 match could have gone either way. iirc wimbledon 2006 also went 4 sets, though that one definitely seemed to favor fed a lot more. fed also gave nadal a bread stick iirc in either 2006 or 2007 FO and we know the winner of those two slams. all i'm saying is in bo5, i dont think it will be smooth sailing and even during his peak it never was unless indoors and that was a bo3.

This will favor Federer if the potential Fedal semi takes place, because more than likely it will be happening in the evening, under the lights. Nadal will enjoy the conditions for his quarter, but quite frankly, he does not need them to beat Rublev, so he will be the one adjusting to conditions where the sun plays less of a factor in that semi. The shade comes by very quickly over Ashe, so there will be no sun during the Fedal semi.

Federer will like the late night conditions, he will not have to adjust too much, having played two matches already, with this match and a potential Fedal semi on top of that. Del Potro will struggle more under those conditions, on this court, with Fed, but should still put up a decent showing. Simply cannot see Federer letting Delpo beat him here again, especially this weaker version.

These little things are starting to slowly play into Federer's hands, Delpo going five sets with a flu, means he is unlikely going to fully fit, if Federer straight sets him, he will be looking very solid to win his 20th this week.

Well to be fair Federer v DelPo will always sell more seats than Nadal v Unseeded opponent... Capitalism prevails in this situation, unfortunately

Gosh, wouldn't it be such a shame if Fed had to go into the match-up short on rest for once?

Put Nadal after Federer then he and his fans will complain about the unfairness of less rest.

Put him before Federer then he'll complain about the organisers not respecting him after he said in a presser for a previous match how hard he found it playing under the roof.

ESPN exec to Fed: "Roger, baby. We got you your favorite spot - at 9pm EDT on Ashe. Now go take care of that Kohlschreiber fella."

Rafa: "And when do I play, you know the #1 player in the world with 15 slams?"

ESPN exec checking his papers "Uhh, you're on at lunch time for the kids and seniors. Good luck Rasa"

If Fed beats Nadal in the SF guarantee you'll be whining that it was a night match and that the crowd is to blame.

In fairness the crowd was pretty much inexcusable in the Del Potro match (I know you might not agree given your name, and FWIW I like Del Potro way more than Theim). I would expect them to root for Roger in a hypothetical semi with Nadal, and that is fine, but I hope for none of the matches are they as bad as they were in that one. They were like a Roland Garros crowd in that match, and that is not a compliment.

Well, nothing touches the USO 2015 final when it comes to the crowd.

Well my main point was that he is whining for the sake of whining. As far as the crowd, depends on who you ask I suppose. The raucous crowds have never really bothered me, and sometimes they're raucous to the detriment of Federer (made noise on a Youzhny point they thought he flubbed and Fed ended up losing the point. Was set or break pt cant remember). I know a lot of people get annoyed by the crowds. I don't really mind Davis Cup type crowds, personally.

As much as the crowd trolled Thiem he's the one that let them get to that point by not staying on the jugular of a half-dead Delpo.

The U.S Open semi between Capriati and Henin was one of the worst I saw. Henin won me a lot of respect that way winning inspite of that vile crowd plus a red hot Capriati, plus cramps and injury.

Not only fans but crowd noise tolerance also depends on the player you're asking I'm sure. But no, I don't expect a Fedal crowd to be quiet. I can already see the losing players fanbase using it as an excuse. The Nadal excuse makers will bemoan Nadal not being "used" to night matches because of "unfavorable scheduling", crowd noise, and Fed excuse making fans will bemoan having to play the second QF, Fed's back, slowest court in the history of tennis, etc.

That's a big reason why I won't be too upset if Rublev or Delpo wants to ruin the SF. This place going to be insufferable here soon if that match is on tap.

How is that whining? I don't care if Fed beats Nadal or vice versa. But I think it's silly to put Fed on every night as the headliner. Kohlschreiber is must see TV? Fed's like 58-0 against him.

Why should the match fixer get put on AA? Kohlschreiber played a good match and 2/3 sets were tight. Whereas none of the Nadal/Dog match was tight.

My belief for why Rafa didn't get many night matches are because of his draw completely imploding. I'm pretty sure his fans and Rafa himself would take a much easier draw over what time in the day he's playing.

Kohl has also beaten top guys in slams, including crushing Djokovic in straight sets at the 09 French where he would have a good shot at the title otherwise with Nadal losing. I could be wrong but I dont believe Dolgo. has. So of the two that was the better shot of an upset or atleast a competitive match, even if still not much.
