No surprise, he said we would if he won Montreal to secure the #2 seed (not that it matters if Fedal are drawn together for 4th time this year ). No need to tire himself out before the USO.

Why is Montreal/Toronto right before Cinci? Is it so hard to tweak the calendar to put a week between those two masters 1000? The way it is now It hurts both tournaments.

For the same reason Madrid and Rome are back to back... just happens that way because of the calendar.

Miami and Indian Wells are back to back even though they're week and a half events.

Very smart.

He knew Nolan and Fred were gonna no show Montreal. Vulture that then duck them in Cinncy.

This just sucks...

Both Djokovic and Federer skipping made Montreal weak. Thiem and Zverev were pathetic. Tsitsipas, Kyrgios tired from Washington.

Now Djokovic and Federer same side of draw at Cinci. Some joker will make the final .

Nadal optimiza el esfuerzo fisico y no jugará el #M1000 de #Cincinnati (no lo jugó el año pasado), descansará y se preparará para defender semifinales en el #USOpen (perdió con Del Potro)

Nadal optimizes the physical effort and will not play the #M1000 of #Cincinnati (He did not play it last year), he will rest and prepare to defend semifinals in the #USOpen (lost with Del Potro)

Had he lost in QF he probably would have played.
I selfishly kind of wanted fognini to win because I knew I would probably get a chance to see Rafa in Cinci. Maybe I worded that wrong. I didn't want fognini to win but wouldn't have been as disappointed as it would have given me a chance to go watch Rafa practice and play live. Unfortunately with my work and the timing of the US tournaments I haven't got a chance to ever see Rafa in person despite watching almost every match he has ever played the last 12ish years.

He got a walkover in the semifinal, and the final was just an hour and 10 minutes.
I don't think that matters to him. He got some match play, got a title, guaranteed the 2 seed now at USO. Hard courts are hard on his body and where he is most likely to get hurt.

I don't see how people can fault him for not going to cincy while roger and djoker didn't go to canada.

i don't think it's that hard for a top player to play both since top seeds get byes and Rafa prob wouldn't even play until Tues or Weds anyway...

Back to back is the tradition for us open series, the same for the Indian - miami and Mardid to Rome. Also, Big 3 skipped one of the three is not due to the calendar and they just simply pick one of two to warm up for US OPEN.

Smart move; no point in playing a low bouncing tournament when USO is gonna be high bouncing.

Rafa to win USO due to fluke draw yet again, and end the year end number one. He will become GOAT in 2020.

I think you're allowed to shorten your schedule once you've got like 10 years on tour and a certain number of matches played.

I believe so

But Nadal can skip it cause he has more than 600 wins, is older than 31 and more thAn 12 years on tour
Now all big 3's schedule are all for the GS. They just take very limited number of tounaments outside of GS to warm up and grab some points. In another word, even they don't have waived treaty, they still do the same schedule cause lots of point slots are not even utilized for big 3 even all masters are mandatory for them.

Smart move from him. Gain some confidence on the North American hard courts by winning Montreal, but don't lose any mental edges by facing and possibly being beaten by Nolan/Fred. Goes into US Open fresh and hope for another easy draw.
